Trying to figure this out has been driving me crazy.

How exactly do you put videos on the ipad?

I've already converted the files to mp4 using handbreaks ipad setting. Then I place the video files in the ipad folder that set to sync pictures. I check the box that says sync videos also. I sync, the photos sync but when I click the videos icon on my ipad it comes up empty and tells me there are no videos and I can download them from the itunes store.

By the way I'm here with my ipad and my droidX side by side, I typed this entire message on my cellphone. The ipad seriously needs sywpe or speech to text. While I admit the ipad is better for consumption, my phone is a vastly superior input device.
You need to add the videos to iTunes, not the photo folder. Videos sync the same way music does.

Get AVPlayerHD and save yourself a lot of trouble. You just synch the files in the AVfolder in your App tab, or simply use the built in wifi mode to transfer movies and subtitle files over

That's more trouble to me. Why wouldn't I just use the built in system as intended?

Because most files are not supported by the built in Video player? Or that itunes does not recognise them without a convert?

The guy I was responding to had already converted the files. Personally, I rip my DVD's using Handbrake, so I'm good.

also when I convert an unsupported video file to a supported one (mp4), the file size gets much larger than the original one, if you wanted to convert it at the same quality. or at least that is what happens to me

what would you guys recommend?
CineXplayer
AVplayerHD
GoodPlayer (universal app)

i use CineXplayer and i like it a lot... plays my batman tas & oc season 1 dvd rips

probably shouldn't have admitted that

I think he's saying that DVDs are straight ghetto and you should be going with blu-rays or HD purchases :p

you fools are really starting to make me think i need to watch OC Season 1.

But seriously - why not just handbrake them? Then you have a nice clean mp4/m4v that will play on computer, ipad, iphone and prolly even 360/ps3 (too lazy to test)

you should watch season 1 - it's an excellent fully contained story. it's equal parts funny & heartbreaking and has a really charming cast.

the first 6 episodes establish the characters - the rest of the season takes these seemingly 1 dimensional archtypes and turns them on their head.

seth cohen is a huge reason the show is so good - he resonated a lot with me. he makes tons of great references to stuff i absolutely love (princess mononoke, the amazing adventures of kavalier & clay, bright eyes, etc) and clearly has issues dealing with "his" weird esoteric passions becoming popular. we also had similar superbabe situations. hit close to him on a lot of levels.

i'll look into handbrake, for sure.

I fully endorse whichever season of the OC Olivia Wilde was in. The one where she plays a hot, blonde lesbian. That was some good TV.

nah that was when things got shitty... rachel bilson is the best looking girl on the show. her + adam brody's characters

Absolutely no reason to wait on a future iteration for this kind of product. I [re]purchased an iPad 1 a few months before the 2 only because I knew it would fetch near retail on craigslist a few weeks before the launch. The crazy demand for these new tablets essentially means you can get a free, indefinite rental, heh.

Could anyone recommend a Windows program that converts .mkv files to iPad compatible .mp4? Have been using AirVideo for my .mkv videos but I'll be going on a trip soon so I'd like to bring the videos along on the iPad.

make sure you sign up with your verizon/time warner/etc info before you go! it took me a while to find out my log in info and i'd hate to be stuck on a plane with the app but no log in :(

I tried to get my Dad to give me his U-Verse login info so I could use it and he doesn't know what it is! BOO.

Just use a player app like AV Player HD that will play all formats, so you won't have to waste time converting, and even worse syncing with pos itunes.

They could have saved millions in advertising and quadrupled their ratings if, instead of commercials, they Just aired your post on the screen for 5-10 secs at a time.

So if I wanted to put an anime that is in .mkv file format onto the iPad 2 with subs working, what would I do?

Does it play 720p or 1080p anime mkv?

I tried a 720p (non-anime) movie and it chugged and froze. Though I tend to use a pretty high bitrate when I encode as I err on the side of quality rather than efficient use of HDD space, so your experience may differ.

Take note: these third party players which can play mkv/xvid/avi natively use more battery life than if you had converted to mp4/h.264.

Why? Their video decoder only has access to the CPU and not the GPU's H.264 video decoder. This results in more CPU usage, choppier playback with high quality videos, and less battery life.

Do you know how can I disable the "drag to change tab" option in the iCab mobile browser?

I'm finding it uncomfortable, but can't figure out how to disable it.

Just joined the ipad army here. Got an Ipad 1 instead though since I didn't feel the iPad 2 was necessary.

got a 64 gb ipad or 400 so I feel like I got a decent bargain. So anyone know where I should start with this device?

does anyone here use a stylus and/or take notes on theirs? Part of my justification for buying it was for note taking and school work. And of course a ton of dicking around as well.

You can do it in the iPhone settings app, there's an icab settings option there. You have to have the latest icab update.

handbrake

Was able to convert a video successfully so thanks for the suggestion. However, it lost the subtitles. Do I just click "Add Subtitle" and leave the boxes for stuff like Forced Only and Default unchecked?

Try this, my new favourite! http://www.freemake.com/free_video_converter/

It'll detect any subtitles in the mkv give you the option of which you wish to add or you can add external .srt files.

Super simple and has replaced handbrake for me

I was trying to do this but it wasn't working.

The problem? I was trying to drag and drop video files to the "Videos" part in itunes. Duh? Why would something so intuitive work in itunes. It turnes out I had to ad the folder to the library via the File menu. Now it works.

Sigh.

You don't. Unless you have a java bookmarklet.

Well, there's no "videos" part of iTunes, I think. Maybe you meant Movies or TV Shows. You were trying to drag it into the connected iPad section right? Because you can drag it into your iTunes library fine, but you can't drag and drop things directly into iOS devices unless you're doing it in the Apps screen (that's not going to get you into the iOS-native apps, though). iOS devices and iPods work by syncing with what's inside the library.

Anyone else use the Speck PixelSkin HD Wrap? That thing is feckin awful. I wanted to use it as both a case and a stand. Seemed like a great case, protected the iPad well but fucking hell did it suck as a stand. When putting into a typing "stand" position it would slip constantly and have me very annoyed very quickly. Another thing is that it doesn't have the magnets like the smart cover to keep it closed, but rather a suction thing. After about half an hour, I already noticed it was losing grip.

End result: I'm sending the damn Speck back and ran down to Target and picked up a Smart Cover. Much, MUCH better. No slipping when used as a stand and fantastic magnetic grip when closed. I know for sure any case I buy in the future better be at least on par with the Smart Cover.

Get FileBrowser. It's pretty much the solution to any "how do I get [blank] onto my iPad?" question. And never use sideloading via iTunes again.

Friends don't let friends transfer files with iTunes.
