So...ironically, I dropped my messenger bag this morning, hard. iPad was in a well padded sleeve inside the bag, and it's fine, but the corners of the Acase cover chipped. It won't stay on anymore.

It's only $12, so maybe I'll order another one. Or maybe I'll just go back to the smart cover by itself. Not sure.

The cover came today and I must say, I am sort of underwhelmed, I think I will need a cover for the front too. It looks like this leaves the panel on the back uncovered so I am able to be a magnetic cover on the front. Looks like I will take advantage of that, what are the best? Is the Smart Cover line actually worth it?

Also, do you recommend a padded sleeve to put it in for a book bag? I will be taking either this or my laptop to class, so I should probably get a padded case for that purpose anyways

Awesome game...

For those of you that have and use Splashtop (Remote), how far away from your computer can you be (with your iPad)? Do you have to be within the viscinity of it, or could you get the program running, drive across town, and then connect your iPad to a WiFi connection and use it?

You can connect over the internet, but it uses Google accounts. You log into your Google account on the Splashtop client on your PC, then log into it on the App on you iPad

Slashtop currently calls it an "experimental feature," so I guess there is a chance of some bugs. There is a probably a (small) chance it could be removed in future updates too if they do not get it working right.

Guys, I know this is the iPad 2 thread, but there isn't a generation agnostic iPad thread (like, say, there is a Mac one), so I'll leave this here:

BNIB iPad 1 64GB + 3G with a Macally case, iPad dock, an external battery, for 600. Is it a good deal at this point?
My father is on the verge of getting one and I want to advise him on this.

Anyone bought the yamaha tenori-on app yet? It's absolutely amazing, functionality is for the most part on par with the hardware and it's a tiny percentage of the price. So good.

Not currently an owner, but: I'd strongly suggest having him look at demo models of both. I was in a Best Buy that had demo units of both generations a month or two ago, and it only took about 30 seconds on both to get hit over the head with the fact that the sequel is a big, big step up in performance.

Sorry if I wasn't clear before, it's specifically designed to work in combination with the Apple smart cover. If you didn't have that already, i wouldn't have recommended it. You could always pick up a smart cover now, and get the same benefit, of course.

I do have a sleeve as well, which I leave in my bag.

I know the first gen very well (own one) and have messed up with the second. Definitely snappier but it's the extra RAM that does it for me. Far better browsing experience.
But the 1st gen iPad is still a very usable device (hence why I haven't upgraded).

But TBH I don't think my dad needs a lot of storage, or 3G, so yeah, I'm inclined to recommend him an iPad 2 16 or 32 - wi-fi only.

Thanks!

That's pretty cool. Any idea what the battery (drainage) amount is like?

I never use regularly, but the battery drain seemed to be nothing different than just regular Internet usage for me. I was on my friends WiFi at the time, so maybe using it via 3G might be a bit more of a battery hog.

So, after a bout of anger and being tired, I think I may have left my iPad outside. I'm debating on whether to get another one (I'd rather spend it on the next model), but I used it to do couch surfing, read comics, read technical manuals and occasionally game.

If I had just lost my iPad and knew there was no hope of getting it back I'd honestly go home via the Apple store and buy another one on the spot. I'd be a bit lost without my iPad these days...

Didn't you have find my ipad enabled?

Gotcha. Looks like I'll be picking up a smart cover then. I need to get a cover with a stand anyways, so it works out anyways. Thanks for your continued help! Also, what cover do you have(color)? I wish there was a black non-leather cover, because my black case, and black iPad would be better with a black cover too. I am thinking maybe grey could work.

Loving the iPad so far. I have been using it for sitting around while watching tv, of watching Netflix in bed mostly. But, it is very quickly becoming my Twitter and Facebook device, even more than my iPhone has ever been. The official Twitter app for the iPad is amazing in my mind, and it has a perfect interface to take advantage of the screen. For Facebook, I have been using "MyPad" which basically copies the Twitter interface, so I am enjoying those 2 apps very much.

A surprise app that I find myself using us Flipboard which has a cool page turning interface that gives me cool news, and a fresh layout for my Twitter and Facebook feeds. I wish I had HBO because the HBO Go app would be amazing to have at all times.

I have the Navy leather cover, it looks pretty good with the black Acase. There were more expensive options that match the various smart cover colors, but I felt like I spent enough already. Two tone is ok. The grey would look fine, I'd imagine.

I don't have HBO either, but my Dad does, so I sign in using his account. Works like a charm. :)

My friend the iPad pangs grow worse by the minute without anyway to comfortably surf (minus flash), read comics and access my technical manuals.

I want to buy a new one, but my girlfriend insists we hang up a sign in her ghetto-ass neighborhood to see if someone found it.

If I do buy a new one, I'm going white this time. Is there an app to encrypt the contents of the flash drive?

The iPad's Facebook is awesome. It basically lets you do what you can do on a PC. Even youtube videos plays fantastic.

Never tried the iPhone/iPod version though, so I'm kinda new with this mobile fb.

buy iPad 2 now or wait for iPad 3...hmmm

do you need it now ?

can you still wait a few months? (probably 3-4 months)

or you can just flip a coin. when the coin is in the air, you'll know the answer. ;)

Too be honest, I don't NEED it now. I sure would LIKE to have it now.

But this is the situation I was in when I bought an iPod touch last year...I knew I would want the upgraded resolution display so I ended up waiting for the 4th gen and was glad I did.

I guess if I'm going to spring for an iPad, I would want the "retina" display that's pretty much guaranteed in iPad 3. Here's hoping it comes sooner rather than later.

It's not coming until march of next year. Apple only started to make deals for 'retina' type screens a few weeks ago. People who still think there will be an ipad3 for Christmas are crazy.

Though I can completely understand waiting for a better model, I'm glad I got an ipad2.

Yeah, while iPad 3 late this year would be great, I'm definitely not expecting it. At the earliest, I could see it arriving in February 2012 but yeah...early 2012.

I just got so used to looking at the retina display that I know I would just a bit disappointed if I went ahead and got an iPad 2 and a higher res iPad 3 came out in a 5-6 months. But man that's a long time to wait...

Although you iPad 2 owners could probably attest to the resolution and whether it is a big deal or not.

Will Airplay Mirroring work on the first iPad, or is it an iPad 2 feature?
iPad 2 only, considering the speed I'm guessing there's some extra hardware involved with it.

I'm not sure about encryption*, but you can at least put a passcode on it along with the "wipe iPad after 10 failed attempts" thing. If you finish the Find My iPad setup next time you could also send a remote wipe command for the next time the thing connects to the internet (or track location, pop up messages, or send a beacon sound).

*I think it started as a feature with the iPhone 3GS or 4, so I assume it's possible on the iPad but I've never looked into it.

I've got a random dumb question and thought, why does amazon not sell the iPad 2, I'm not talking about sellers/random companies, but amazon, they only sell certain apple products :(

I wanted to pay no tax from amazon, bummer

Kindle

Seriously though, not really sure. Could be a competition thing, but there might be other factors.

Amazon only started selling the iPad 1 in October of last year too. Maybe Apple was waiting until they could catch up with demand.

Going to Southernish Europe next week for a month long trip, Italy/France/German. Any good suggestions on what navigation app should I get? We are going to travel by trains and foot, so no need for car navigation system. Just gps location, street name search, offline maps..

Look for city guides for the major places. May be more useful than one large generic mapping app.

Well, I caved in and bought another 16GB. This time with the Best Buy protection plan (which includes some locked and found app). They say it covers any extreme damage or if the iPad is stolen/lost (after the app and Best Buy attempt to have the local authorities try to recover it).

The clerk told me the protection plan was an excellent way to get on the ground floor of the next iPad if something were to happen between now and then.

I'm also contacting Apple to see if they can do anything about my lost ipad (at least wiping it the next the next time it hits a wifi spot or whatever).

Are there any good keyboards for iPad 2 beside the Apple one? Is an iPad a good choice if I'm looking to use a tablet to take notes in classes, or is the Asus Transformer the obvious choice if I want to do typing?

I hear that the iPad on-screen keyboard is quick enough to touch-type on, but I'd want the whole screen devoted to the word processing app. And I'm sure the Apple keyboard is really high quality, but I need something that I can both throw in a backpack and fit on a desk.

Amazon never directly sold the iPad 1, they just allowed Amazon marketplace vendors to list it on the site. It was never a tax-free purchase thru Amazon and probably never will be because it competes directly with Kindle and the upcoming Amazon tablet.

What are some good cases for the iPad 2? I'd like something simple that covers the front and back. If the case offered a few viewing angles that would be nice too. I've checked Amazon, Best Buy, and Target and haven't had any luck.
Toblino 2 premium leather case. Best thing I've gotten for my ipad. Its slim, high quality, and offers multiple angles.

Apparently in iCab if you have a bunch of tabs open, then you switch to private browsing mode, then you close the app, it erases all of your tabs (and not just the new one you opened for private browsing) if you forget to turn it off :/

It's a neat idea--I've never even thought of the idea of private tabs. Maybe you should contact the developer, he seems to be very responsive to comments/suggestions.

New video of that stylus I posted about a few days ago, looks like it works well (and I think the app being used is UPAD if anyone is wondering about that):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYp8yzkRRQA

Apparently they're working on a note taking app of their own too, might be decent if it doesn't end up as vaporware:

That looks extremely promising! I'd definitely pick up a Pro, pending a few more positive impressions.

Been thinking of picking up an iPad 2 for a few months now. But then I got thinking instead about an iPod Touch.

Basically all I want is a device that can sit on my coffee table -hooked up to my home stereo - which I can use to instantly boot up my music collection any time I want to listen. I'm done with computers and laptops, navigating through playlists, etc. All I want is a nice touch interface where I could just tap, tap, play all. The only problem is that I have about 50gb worth of music on a portable hard drive. Would I have to transfer everything over and convert it all into iTunes (I hate their compression rates), or can either device allow me to stream them?

Free app that lets you control your home stereo and all the music content in iTunes.

In your case I would recommend the iPod touch. Perfect for what you need and much cheaper (64GB version).

With the Remote app he wouldn't need any storage space. He would have to add everything to iTunes though.

how time consuming is it going to be adding ~5000 songs to it?

No clue I mass add to iTunes overnight on those rare occurrences I get a new system. But there is no way a 64gig Touch will do much for you with that amt of music.
