So, I'm kind of thinking of getting a tablet in the nearish future.

I'm looking at the Asus transformer and the Ipad 2 and had some questions. I have an iphone, so it makes sense to get the ipad 2 in the sense that my purchases can be moved over and movies/etc synced between the two devices. Don't really care about puting music or storing much beyond a movie or two for a plane ride on the thing, so 16GB should do the trick.

Is there a good suite of office compatible software for this? Don't see it happening too often, but it would be nice to be able to work on a document from work while watching TV and not lug the laptop out.

Second, I've used Comixology before.. does anyone know about a subscription model for day and date DC comics happening? I know they are going day and date with the number 1s and it would be so sweet to get the suite of them auto-downloaded or some such when they drop.

Lastly, is there a good resource for magazines you can get digitally? preferably as apps, but really however. This will 99% be used for reading books/magazines/comics with lite web browsing and game playing in there.. and some movie watching on plane trips.
There is the iWork suite in the app store, I believe it's also compatible with Office formats.

Also, the new iOS update will add a newsstand feature for organizing mag and newspaper subs, as well as a section in the Store dedicated to them.

Dragon Dictation, by Nuance.
Nuance might have other stuff on the store as well.

thanks, but I don't need an speech -> text app, but an app to record my voice.

edit:

QuickVoice Lite is exactly what I need

Hey GAF, new iPad owner here!

Looking for general app recs, but especially looking for:

-a PDF reader
-a comics reader

iBook reads PDF's. When you open a PDF on your browser, you will have an option of opening it with iBooks and it will automatically be saved for offline viewing as well.

Some useful Apps (recap for thread newcomers)

Goodreader - General PDFs, docs, PowerPoint, excel, jpegs, etc. Wifi transfer, annotation, password folders, dropbox, etc.
Zinio - digital versions of many 100s magazines.
General print media - dedicated apps for newspapers e.g. (UK) Sunday Times. Magazines eg GQ.
Qwiki - creates multimedia presentations on the fly, based on Wikipedia and picture libraries.
FileBrowser - browse, copy, write to PC, windows content over wifi - many file formats
BBC iplayer - stream last 7 days BBC TV and Radio, now open to 11 European countries, US access coming soon
Blogsy - Good blog editing app for Blogger and Wordpress
Buzz Player - one of many good media streaming apps for serving up videos over wifi from PC, NAS, PS3media server, plays most formats
Dragon Dictation - very good free voice recognition app, converts voice to text
Soundhound - music recognition app, prefer this to Shazam, but both are good.

Other Apps

Skype for iPad has just arrived.
Facebook app for iPad is eminent. Friendly is the Facebook app we currently use.
Remote desktop WAN/LAN - many options for mac and PC, recommendation really depends on usage requirement.

Usual suspects (well known free apps)

Kindle app
eBay app
Google Earth
IMDB app
Bloomberg app
TED app
VEVO app
Wikipedia app

Useful features from recent iTunes updates include the Homeshare function for streaming iTunes library content to iPad. AirPlay function for music streaming, many apps can use AirPlay to send content wirelessly from ipad to airport express or appletv. The Remote app is a must to make iPad controller for iTunes when streaming over wifi.

iCloud update comes with iOS 5 due in September, 5GB free storage, wifi synching of all devices with cloud, iTunes music library in cloud, photo stream in cloud. Many new Apps sure to exploit this new functionality.

Ok ipad gaf, i've been thinking about getting an iPad2. do you think Apple will announce an iPad 3 this fall?

Rumors have been all over the place where there are some people that claim to have directly heard from contacts in Apple that a new iPad will see release sometime in the fall/winter, and others who say that is absolutely absurd that Apple will stay with their normal iPad release cycle.

That said, who knows. If November is here and we haven't heard anything, then you can expect to see the iPad 3 in February/March as usual.

For comics, get ComicZeal. It costs a few bucks, but it's pretty great.
Stop recommending ComicZeal, people! :)

Yes, it was the first major comic reader on iOS, but it hasn't been updated in a year, now has bugs, and is overpriced at $7.99. ComicGlass has more features, is updated often, and is an all-around better comic app for $1.99.

I also want to mention Bookman that has built in dropbox support for easy transfer of comics from your PC. No need for iTunes, FTP or webdav for file transfers.

Yeah, I have Bookman too, it's nice and has got some unique features of its own. If only the zoom ability was better.

As for transferring comics, I still the the best way is to buy a helper app like FileBrowser or FilesConnect. You can use them to browse a network drive such as a USB disk attached to an AirPort Exteme, or any computer on a local network. Just use the "Open In" function to pass the comic file to your comic reader app and never transfer comics over a cable again.

Until ComicZeal supports Dropbox it won't ever be as good.

I'd recommend the 32gig unless you expect to be trading up to ipad3 or 4. It fills up faster than you expect.

There are a number of Office-compatible programs. I use Documents To Go because it's universal, but there's stuff like Quick Office and some others. I also have a bluetooth keyboard case that makes it just as good as a laptop for what I use it for.

I've been using Comicbooklover on my Mac for 3 years now and I'm very happy with it.
The iPod/iPhone and iPad versions are great as well, if a little basic.
But those are free of charge, so why not give them a try. ;)

Why doesn't Apple give a better error message when trying to load unavailable YouTube videos? I've clicked on some posted to the forum here and I'll end up with just a message that says "No Video". That always confused me why it didn't work but I could view it when on my laptop. It was only today when I used an Android tablet where it would say "This video is not available for mobile devices." Why doesn't Apple just give a message similar to that which tells you what's going on? At least then I can figure out how to play it rather than scratching my head trying to figure out why it doesn't work.

New iPad owner here . . . I was using the Asus Transformer, but didn't like the fact that I had $550 invested in a device that wouldn't run Netflix or very many games. Got the iPad with the Logitech/Zagg keyboard-case, and I'm super happy. What a great device. Jailbroke it first thing, and now am enjoying tons of games and features that my Android device didn't have. Thanks for the great recommendations... I'll start buying stuff ASAP!

Newstand is going to remain empty until the apps are updated in the fall to use it.

you can still get subs to, say, Wired, pop sci, nat geo, new yorker, etc, but they won’t show up in the newstand folder.

I'm trying to figure out this ComicGlass/Dropbox malarky. I've whacked some comics onto the dropbox folder on my PC, accessed the files on the Dropbox iPad app, and then opened them in ComicGlass. Lovely.

But it asks me to save a copy in ComicGlass, which means I have two copies of the comics? One in Dropbox and one in ComicGlass? This seems like a waste of precious iPad storage...

[edit] Oh hang on... the Dropbox app doesn't actually save anything it seems? It always re-downloads a file whenever I select one...

Dropbox app doesn't save anything locally AFAIK, you're basically using Dropbox as a conduit to drop remote content into the local storage of ComicGlass. Dropbox is essentially a content viewer, not a copy of your cloud content.

if dropbox integration is a priority, bookman (paid version) is the one to get.

you can have a dropbox folder actually be your shelf of comics and each folder can be a new shelf for a different series.

the first time you navigate to the dropbox shelf, you have to download the issues, of course, but then they are there for as long as you want them and it’s all integrated very well.

and, after reading, you can choose to delete the file locally (just to save ipad storage space) or locally and on dropbox.

I think it’s 2 or 3 bucks.

Well I've gone with ComicGlass. Never going back to Bookman since the bastard did that cheeky update that added ads. Completely the wrong way to start charging for your product.

Yeah, any comic reader can support Dropbox in a way, you simply choose the comic from your Dropbox app and "Open In," then choose your comic app. But Bookman does take it a step further with the option to hit up your Dropbox without leaving the Bookman app.

I think the approach of using local wireless storage is better than Dropbox, since it's basically limited only by the size of your hard drive. You can even access your local wireless storage remotely over the internet using FilesConnect.

One other thing I love about ComicGlass are the image filters. The best is the Image Gamma filter, it makes the older pulp style comics much more readable by reducing the washed out look and improving contrast.

I have a question about the email app.

I've been using Gmail on there happily, but I recently added a Hotmail account too, and it doesn't operate in the same way - after the new emails are shown as read, they still show as unread if I log on to Hotmail via a browser. Also there is no 'continue to search on server' option in the search - I have to keep 'loading more messages' if I want to find an old email.

Is this a limitation of Hotmail? Or is it just not set up correctly for the app?

Sounds like you set it up as POP instead of IMAP.

Pazuzu9 said:
Oh. Um... how does one go about changing to IMAP? I just plugged in my details, didn't mess with anything...
Pretty sure you have to set it up as an imap account and not use the standard gmail settings.

Edit: whoops I should learn to read, you're talking about hotmail and not gmail.

Can you even do this with hotmail? I remember it being a huge pain when I tried to use my old hotmail account with any email clients.

Pazuzu9 said:
Hmmm. It seems some people are suggesting izymail as an imap solution. Others are saying to just make your hotmail forward to your gmail...

Not trying to be a jerk, cause I have a hotmail account as well. But hotmail is straight up not a good service when it comes to 2011. My suggestion is to stop using it.

Just set up your hotmail account as an Exchange account.
Code:
E-Mail: Your e-mail address

Server: m.hotmail.com

Domain: remains empty

Username: Your e-mail address
Password: Your e-mail password

Boom, it just works. Enjoy IMAP with your hotmail account.

finally got Reeder for iPad

wow, you guys weren't kidding! what a great way to read + organize RSS feeds. makes it all very manageable, intuitive and easy to read.

put it up there with Comic Zeal as far as top notch "reading" apps

Ah thanks!

The search on server function still doesn't seem to be available, but at least it marks my emails as read now.
