Thanks for your help, but I think this is more along the lines of what I need:

Sounds like you need the iPad equivalent of the Joby Gorillamobile iPhone tripod.
I'll look into it.

Even though I already got multi-gestures on my iPad 1 (with iOS5), it would be nice to have it officially.

Oh, and the latest iPad 3 report:

Next iPad a minor update with thinner design, better battery life, March launch?
Digitimes claims that the next-generation iPad will launch in March with a thinner overall design and improved battery life. The catch is that Digitimes essentially calls this iPad update an upgraded iPad 2 rather than a full “iPad 3.” Interestingly, the publication says a real iPad 3 is coming Q3 2012. We find it highly unlikely that Apple would launch a thinner iPad then a full “iPad 3″ upgrade only months later. We do think that the thinner, battery better life, and March launch components are strong possibilities, though. Faster processors (A6) and Retina Displays have also been rumored additions for the next-generation iPad.

I wouldn't put much into the "two iPads in a year" talk.

If the next one is thinner and better battery life, it's not going to have the 'retina' screen. That's going to need increased hardware, which would drain the battery more not less.

Getting a Kindle Fire in a few weeks just to whet my tablet appetite while I wait for the iPad 3. I'll be sorely disappointed if it doesn't finally have a retina screen, that's the big thing that held me back from getting an iPad 2 earlier this year. But I guess if they add Siri, and a better battery, I may still bite on a "2S."

Their next SOC will coincide with a shrink to 32nm. Better battery life is pretty much a given.

So i'm new to the whole iPad world. Can't watch anything on youtube. Tried PC, and phone, work just fine. Just get unknown error every time I try to watch something. Something wrong with the app?

Im buying the iPad 3 no matter what and keeping it for at least two years, so that my family can finally use the iPad 1.
As a minimum I want Retina and a HD FaceTime camera, then I will be satisfied. It'll be great if it's thinner, lighter, has a better battery and a slight re-design, but Retina and HD FaceTime will do, as I skipped the iPad 2.

Yeah you can't just assume newer and faster means it'll take more power cause stuff like that. Look at today's mobile Intel chips compared to stuff from 10 years ago for example, they're ridiculously faster yet take less power cause all the technological advances.

I'm doing that, but with iPad 2 -> iPad 4

What happens if you go through the browser?

I am looking to buy a ipad 2 (16GB wifi model). What is a good place to buy it online without paying tax? Also, do you think there would be any good Black Friday deals on an ipad 2?

You could use MacMall for no tax and free shipping. I don't foresee any big deals for it for Black Friday, maybe a free iTunes GC or something but nothing major.

Last year I sold my iPad 1 and upgraded. When the 3 comes out, I'll probably give the 2 to my Dad. He really wants an iPad, but the 2 will be more than enough for him.

i'm upgrading if they double rez the screen. Purely for photo editing.
eh?

I'll be getting the next version if it has a retina display but only for reading magazines and the like. I find an iPad much too aggravating for other tasks.

so whats the deal with cracked screens? Will apple really replace it free one time? Mine feel from the coffee table and put a nice crack across it. I have an ipad2 bought in march.

Went to the apple store yesterday and told one of the people and they said I need to make a genius bar appointment, but the first one they had was at 2 and I was on my lunch break so couldn't stick around.

That's why I just said "screw it" and bought an iPad 2 a few weeks ago. I'm loving it.

ipads have great resale value too. might as well just buy the ipad 2. i sold my used ipad 1 for $400.

Hi guys, quick question.

I'm a big Airplay user, I stream everything I can to my TV. Up until the latest update everything seemed to work fine, i could airplay from my iphone 4 and airplay mirror from my ipad NP's. But after the latest AppleTV update (4.4?) I've been having issues with Airplay. Just as before I could airplay from my Iphone 4 or Ipad but as soon as my Iphone's screen goes black the airplay cuts. Does anyone else have this issue? prior to the AppleTV 4.4 update, even when my Iphone's screen went black Airplay would continue in the background.

The only exception to this is AirVideo. It can continue to Airplay even when the screen of the Iphone goes black.

Weird huh?

Is there anyway to control the quality of Youtube videos through the Youtube app or website? My slow ass internet connection makes streaming anything larger than 480p a chore.

I know I can go to m.youtube.com and turn off HQ but that seems to default to 240p. Am I missing some kind of option screen or something?

craigslist for me.

I'm hoping a 7 incher will be unveiled as well since I find the 10" size to be a bit cumbersome for my small Asian frame and a bit heavy when lying down and holding it up otherwise I'm fairly happy with mine.

Yep. Same here. I might try and go a few weeks more. Last year I beat the iPad 2 announcement by a few weeks, I think that netted me some extra dollars.

My iPad 2 doesnt seem to like playing embedded YouTube videos on Safari. For example, any video I try to watch on a Gawker site only loads audio but the video frame remains black. It worked fine until just recently.

Anyone else experience this?

I wonder if Apple will be able to keep the same price point for iPad 3 with all the new tech being thrown in.

No specs have been revealed so how do you know what's going to be thrown in?

Most likely they'll just put in what they can to still maintain their margins at the same price of $499 like their last release as they've always done with their products.

I think this might be an iOS5 thing, before when I clicked on YouTube videos it'd launch the app and start playing. Now it goes to the mobile YouTube site and you have to force it to play.

I've seen it a few times too. I'm not sure if it's iOS 5 or YouTube's embedded player that's causing the problem, but whatever the case either viewing the video on YouTube's page (might be a link in the video frame itself) or through the app works.

Yeah, tapping on the empty video frame will bring up the video's title, and that serves as a link that opens the vid in the YouTube app. That method is serviceable, but it was so convenient being able to watch vids directly embedded onto a web page in Safari. Oddly, the issue is inconsistent. Youtube vids will load fine on some sites, I.e. Touch Arcade, but only audio will load on all of the Gawker sites (Gizmodo, io9, lifehacker, etc).

Argh.

Anyone still looking for note taking apps, Notability (which has apparently been around for a while) got freehand drawing/writing input and is on sale for $1 right now. The input performance seems pretty good, at least on iPad 2, and it does typing input and sound recording as well.

It doesn't seem to handle PDF backgrounds as well as Note Taker, like it kind of renders the background as you get to it, but it may just be struggling with what I'm giving it (300dpi color scan).

Doesn't have shapes and other stuff beyond text, drawing (and eraser), and sound, but it's a case of less is more for me I guess. It ultimately has the main things I need and is easy enough to switch between them quickly.

Edit-correction on that last part about shapes, there's some drawing mode that lets you draw something with shape tools and then insert into the page.

Thanks for the heads up. I have too many apps to update these days that I can't find the time to look at the release notes (which are harder to do in iTunes on the desktop than in the iOS appstore for some reason). I'm giving up on the whole iPad&stylus scene though; I've had enough with poor tools.

sidenote: Note Taker for iPhone/iPod Touch has really been neglected. No updates in over a year and it doesn't even have retina graphics. There aren't any noteworthy handwriting apps for the small devices :(

So I'm tempted to buy an Ipad, but I'm not sure if I should do it or just wait for the next revision. However, if I do that, and assuming it will launch in march, I would have to wait till like may (I'm from Chile, so we don't have simultaneous releases).
What does Gaf recommends? Are there any other rumors beside retina display that are worth waiting for?.
Thanks!

If I were in your position, I would buy it now. May is almost 6 months away (that's assuming it releases when you think it will) and it's pointless to speculate what the next one will have at this point in time.

iPad 2 is great. I'm using it to type this post and I have no complaints with the device.

Great!. So it seems I will have to do some shopping after work :D
On your experience, is 16GB enough, or should I aim for 32? I have an 16GB Iphone, and mp3s are what take most of its capacity. Given I don't think I will be using it to listen to music, would it be a problem for Apps/photos?
Thanks again!

32GB should be fine for apps and photos. Although it certainly depends on how much we're talking about here. If you want to start putting video on there too, a 64GB might be an option. I honestly wouldn't worry about a 16GB.

Never buy an iPad with 16GB, too many times I'm out of space..
FIFA, Infinity Blade, Rage etc. are around 1GB. Magazines and books take up a lot of space too.

Yeah. 16GB is good for old people who will only ever download a couple of apps. For everyone else, I would always recommend 32GB or 64GB.

I don't know how those Kindle Fire folks will get by with a paltry 8GB. That's torture. My OG iPhone had 8GB back in 2007.

I don't keep my music or photos on my iPad so 16GB is enough for me and will be until Apple stops using 16GB as the baseline.

Keep in mind iTunes can be streamed over your home network, music-wise.

And I don't see many people using the iPad as a portable music player, so keeping anything on there outside of the essentials music-wise seems odd.

I'm going to get my lady an iPad2 for Christmas. Can you guys recommend a few essentials for me? We're expecting a baby in March, so I'm going to load it up with some baby apps and what-not.

I'm not sure what the best cases are, etc. etc.

As far as cases go, I'd grab her a gift card for Best Buy or any other local retailer that carries cases. Best to let her pick out what she likes the most.

There's been rumours of an iPad mini that should be coming out in early 2012, how likely is this? I like my iPad but I would prefer something a bit smaller and lighter...

I could see them trying to compete against the Kindle Fire, but not sure Apple would want to get in there at a $199 price point.

v4gr4nt said:
It's decided then, 32 GB will be!
Do you guys use an envelope or something similar, or is Smart cover enough?

Smart cover is enough for me, but everyone is different. Some people wrap their iPad in screen protectors and put cases on the front and back...others go naked with just a smart cover. Depends on how careful you are with the iPad and where you use it.

Just like how there has been a mini-iPhone rumored all these years? Not going to happen. The most realistic scenario is Apple keeps selling iPad 2 at a lower price point (to compete with the Fires and Nooks of the world on price) when the higher resolution iPad 3 hits the market.

Can anyone recommend a good cover for the back of the iPad 2? I got my dad an iPad 2 and a smart cover but he wants something to protect the back. What's the best thing for that?
