there are plenty of bluetooth GPS units out there. Nokia does one, and tom tom used to do one back in the days of ipaq navigators with no built-in GPS.

Now that 3.0 brings bluetooth in 2nd gen ipod touch, there is a chance that navigators could support bluetooth GPS.

Anyone know if the rumored 3rd gen ipod touch will get GPS? Supposed to already be getting a camera. Seems like a no-brainer to make it as similar as possible hardware-wise to the iphone, to help with appstore purchases

I would hope it has one. Obviously they would want to keep the lines differentiated to encourage getting the more expensive device, but the iPod touch and iPhone are in different markets, so I think function parity would be a good idea.

By adding a GPS into the iPod touch, they get 30% off all the GPS apps sold! C'mon apple, that has to be printing money.

Also, iStat just went live for me, so I'm updating to see the new process monitroing. So long free memory.

Need some recomendations, guys.

What is the very best office suite app and the best wi-fi disk app?

Thanks in advance.

– Layers. Brushes now supports up to 4 layers. You can import multiple photos, adjust layer opacity, merge, reorder layers, and copy and paste them between paintings.

– Enhanced Brush panel. Toggle between brush mode and erase mode. Adjust paint opacity within the brush panel.

– Enhanced zooming. Zoom in up to 1600%. Double tap to quickly toggle between 100% and your preferred zoom level.

Also Convert from TapTapTap, my favourite convert app got a bug fix update. Turn around time for approval was only a few days to a week, I think.

jts: I don't use any office suite app, so I have no opinion, but I have at least HEARD of Documents to go.

Also, I use Air Sharing, but only because I got it for free. It does the job, and there's a pro version with more features available. It was one of the earlier apps released. File Magnet is another I've heard of.

Stumbled across a cool app called What's On? and I definitely recommend it. It has tv listings and movie times. The cool things about it are, aside from the obvious guide list you'd expect, it gives you episode descriptions and not just the tv name. You can search for a show and see when it's airing next, which is very useful to me, and you can set reminders for an episode with it's push notifications.

There's other nice touches like some news, favorite shows, choosing what tv service you have and channels you want to appear in the guide, etc. Handy app, free.

Can anyone recommend a good but free up to date currency converter that doesn't require internet connection in order to function? I want to use it on a trip to Europe but won't have internet access once I'm there.

The new Facebook update actually makes the app functional enough to be useful. They added a nice new interface and horizontal support. There's also a "Like" button now and you can go directly to comments on status and images. It's really much better than it was.

The calculator app? I mean, without internet access, it's not really going to be up-to-date, so the best thing is just to memorise(or use the M+ key) the conversion rate and do the conversion. Otherwise, I think most converter apps, free or otherwise, will still do it, they just normally default to the last update rates.

pretty sure most converter apps will just default to the last know exchange rate if no network is available. just download a couple free ones and test over airplane mode.

UI-wise, I like both Convertbot and taptaptap's Converter app. (not sure if they are free, tho)

An official FlickR app has appeared from Yahoo:

(Hit icon for Appshopper link)

Free, although not available in NZstore.

Pretty basic, but a nice simple, elegant UI.

Allows upload, as well as tabs to access your image, recents. A nice title splash page has photos floating from recent activity (so I get images from other gaffers).

On first loading, it will prompt to go to Safari to log in, and then return you to the app. I guess it writes a cookie or something? Pretty weird. Also if does take you to Safari, it manages to relaunch the app from the browser.

I was looking for a Flickr app for the longest time, and finally got Flickup.

Then I remembered I could send photos from my phone to my Flickr account via e-mail. Then Flickr allowed you to Tweet and upload photos to your Flickr account by sending them to another special e-mail address.

So, basically, I don't think I need a Flickr app anymore, although I guess it's good for those who hate the e-mail method.

I think you can if you have the second gen iPod touch, as that has an extra connector to allow mic input. If you have a first gen touch, then you're out of luck.

Yeah, it works.

Not sure if the button works, though.

I'd like to recommend A Perfect Web Browser 2 [99cents @ iTunes].

One of the things that's annoying about Safari is not having a button to scroll down. Reading long articles can be an annoying flick up fest, and although there's the scroll down bookmarklet, looking for something, like a picture, in the middle of a web page can be super annoying requiring what I call the double sprint, both thumbs flicking after another.

APB2 has a scrollbar called "Hyper Scroll." You can slide it down to go to the bottom quickly, or tap the down arrow to scroll down. It makes navigation easier, no sprinting required.

APB2 also has real tabs that display like you'd expect on top instead of in the background as cards. There are some other neat tricks, like fullscreen browsing, the Google compression integration built in for quick browsing on edge, etc but those are the two main selling points that are worth 99 cents if you find yourself annoyed by the issues. If you don't, then there's not much here for you.

Just thought I'd share that, as I would have liked to know about it a long time ago.

Are there any apps that would let me stream my music to my Touch over my home Wi-Fi connection? Preferably free since I'm a broke college student :(

Give ZumoDrive and Simplify Music a look. By no means the best solutions for you (although Simplify Music is awesome, I've used it for streaming from home computer to work computer), just two I'm familiar with. There's also Simplify Music 2 which I guess is better.

Well, seeing how this is a new thread, I'd like to ask a question to the people that have an ipod touch, I'm not sure what I should do. Should I get a 16GB, the one that they discontinued for some dumb reason, or get the 32GB, are the differences in fireware and do some of the apps get reeall big, I'm going to gave at max 6 GB or music tops, I mean do you really need 32GBs! Also is the speed really any better, to people that bought the 32GB???

My recommendation is, if you can afford it, get the newer one.

Several reasons.

First, it may seem like enough storage at first, but something that I've learnt is that you typically grow to the size available. No, apps aren't typically all that big, but they do vary a lot depending on the software. Many basic apps are under 10MB, but a few more serious reach into the hundreds.

A few select apps are close to 1GB.

You'll find that the device is so cool, that you'll want to do whatever is possible with it, and this will include video. Video takes up a lot.

Secondly, the 32GB newer model has a faster processor (I think - it's faster, anyway). This will become important in a year or two when the older models will not be able to keep up.

Hey all,

Just wanted to alert everyone that our app finally got published to the app store today. I'm not sure who saw my rant a while ago on the process we've had to go through, but its been nothing short of aggravating and allowed our competitors to get a huge legup on us, even though we were ready for release at 3.0. ANYWAY...

If anyone's interested: its a power hour app (the drinking game) - yes, there are a few of them on there now, but I really think ours is the best. Basically pulls songs via your itunes playlists on your phone, etc., with lots of options.

Some screenies:

power-hour-mockup.png

power-hour-mockup-2.png

This is our website with a lot more info on it: http://www.proximalabs.com/apps

App store linke: http://www.appsto.re/powerhour

Any comments, suggestions, etc for v2 much appreciated. Also if anyone wants to, you know, review it that would be cool. I think we get some developer tokens to give out at some point, so let me know if you're interested.

Currently costs 99 cents btw, but we are considering making it free to promote ourselves and since the other guys are entrenched now that they've been there for a bit.

Cheers!

So has anyone here bought the air mouse app? It's the app that connects to your computer and lets you use the phone as a wireless mouse...I'm getting a lot of lag with it, anyone else here have this app?

Hmm haven't tried this yet, I'll give it a go thanks.

I haven't used Air Mouse (although my brother has it), but an oft overlooked app is TouchPad by Jugaaru (same dev as Jaadu VNC).

I find this app to be very full featured, and works really well. It's complete with 3-finger gestures mapped to the usual 4-fingers on a mac, and 2-finger scrolling, plus the pinch motion enables the zoom (good if you're halfway across the room).

Best of all, it requires NO additional software on the mac and just works via Leopard Screen sharing.

Is there a good map application? I want to use the Maps app on my Touch, but it's useless as it requires WIFI. I don't care if it is like 3 GB and has maps of the entire world, I need this app.

Most of the map apps are only useful if you have gps. And they cost anywhere from $35 to over $100.

blindrocket said:
Can you save routes from Maps on the Touch so when you are not in Wi-Fi you can still at least see the route and directions?

Kind of. It caches the last route and maps, but I wouldn't rely on it necessarily to be there when you next load up the app, although it often is. I have an iPhone without data, and I made a route in my city. A week later of not using the app, I found myself unaware of where I was heading. I loaded up Google maps, and the cached map was still there, and my GPS kicked in and let me know where I was.

If you guys need saved maps, you're probably better off downloading a map pdf and using a pdf viewer (although in my experience, large PDFs slow the iPhone to a crawl).

i asked this in another thread, but it was completely ignored.. i figure i'll have a better chance in this one:

So, I am going to go to the apple store today and buy an iPod Touch... which case do you guys recommend?

The reason you probably got ignored is that it has been through the thread several times, although probably relating to the iPhone more. Some people , like me, don't use protective cases - although I do use a small sleeve or sock type thing when it's in my pocket. Sorry, I have no recommendations for cases.

Also, you're asking for case recommendations in an app discussion/recommendation thread.

I just bought a Belkin case from the Apple Store. $30. Fits nice and tight and it's not bulky. I may only use it when I run though, but we'll see. The dude let me open the case and try it on before I bought it, might want to try that out.

TextPlus works really well. It's a shame most people on the receiving end are idiots and don't understand that they just need to reply like the damn text says to do. Could save me $15 a month if my friends were smarter.

Got my phone two days ago. I just tried Shazam for the first time.

Holy fucking shit.

It picked out an instrumental version of a song correctly without the song even getting to the portion where lyrics would ordinarily start. How? :lol

I'm guess a data base of matching the exact song file audio.

I palyed a portion of a Star Wars sound track, and it picked the exact right album 0_O

Shazam impresses me most with TV shows where it can pick out the background music even when the actors are talking over it.

Damn. I can be in the supermarket and music can be playing low on high speakers and if I take out Shazaam and just keep walking it can pick it up, despite the noise and the fact that the music is so far away.

I just wanted to say fuck iTunes! I need a full featured alternative stat!

Let me get this straight...

*Plug up iphone that has music on it from the same PC (I put the music on the iPhone via a playlist thankfully).

*I check 'manually manage music and videos... Thinking that might fuck shit up, I then uncheck.

*Never hit apply

*Look to see what music is on the phone...nothing. All 1000+ songs...gone.

Thankfully my playlist has it all and I just added it back, but it's a pain in the ass and flawed software design.

So, what can I use to replace iTunes? I never want to use it again. It's not often that software pisses me off, but iTunes has managed to do so.

I'm not sure what really happened, because very little happens when I do something without applying.

But really, I don't see how this fits iPhone App Discussion/Recommendation.

Well, it's about an iPhone and iTunes. I've seen worse 'that's not what this topic is about' offenses, but get your point.

I just needed to vent, and find an iTunes alternative. I didn't feel like sifting through a list of iTunes/iPhone related topics for a more suitable thread. Please forgive me.

I would just like to give my personal recommendation for a perfect browser 2. I'm using it as my main browser now and couldn't go back to vanilla safari. Especially for gaf.

Did you actually check ON the iPhone? This behaviour just sounds really weird to me. Aside a few things, nothing happens if you don't hit apply.

Maybe I'm not reading what the issue is.

YOu shouldn't be using straight vanilla safari for gaf - you should be using the web app:

Awesome. I love it. It needs some work, specifically with tabs, but the scrollbar has really changed how awesome web browsing on iPhone is for me. Full screen and lock orientation are great abilities as well.
