88% YOY growth of iPhone. Compared to 42% YOY growth for the entire smartphone market.

And they're growing quickly in China, 5X the sales of last quarter.

Not surprised it's lower than some estimates. Lots of people have been waiting for the next MBP/MBA/iMac updates, including me. Ivy Bridge is to blame, it seems some analysts didn't get the memo.

I got an MBA for my wife last December, but I'm waiting for Ivy Bridge before I pick up my own. I'm glad I did, too. The GPU difference looks to be huge.

Found this on Verge comment thread, crazy growth.

I didn't think the 37m would be sustainable. Crazy.

Why is the 4S so popular when it's such an incremental update? I think it's because the iPhone is finally on other carriers now.

Phew, I was sweating the way AAPL kept tanking in the past few weeks. I knew it'd still do well.

or because the average consumer isn't some whining internet forum nerd who gives a shit about this so called "incremental" update.

The "incremental" update doesn't mean much to customers. Most people aren't poring over the processor and memory.

iPhone 5 is going to blow the doors out - and the iPhone 4 will be a "free" phone in the US.

Do we have an actual breakdown showing 4s vs. 4 sales?

People are still buying the now discounted iPhone 4 in spades.

Other than that.. Siri says "Hello"

It's what almost all 4S advertising has hinged on, must be what is selling the thing. But you can't ignore that iPhone 4 is probably still selling like hotcakes.

Biggest upgrade IMO is the HDSPA+ implementation. Makes a huge difference for me here in the Seattle area at least.

People don't care how much better it is than the one before it. They just care if it's good.

The impact of an update is a bizarre Internet nerd thing that I think comes from PC and console gaming expectations.

If you thought HDTV prices and competition was Cut-Throat before.. GOOD LORD!

Watch Apple sell iTV for $1,999.99 for a 55" with iTunes capabilities
Samsung will be going, we are selling the same shit with 80+ more things stuffed in it for -$500, and we're still losing.. DA FAK!?!

There is a huge untapped market of users who do not own an iPhone. Many people switching from non-smartphones and smartphones like Blackberry. Also 3GS owners who had a 2 year contract in the U.S. upgraded to the 4S. Many 3G users in Canada on 3 year contracts (I know it sucks) upgraded to the 4S. Same for other countries.

Wouldn't be an Apple thread without...whatever this is.

Crazy numbers.

It's an interesting world we live in now. When Henry Ford's cars came around, they revolutionized our world, but also created a middle class due to the well-paid manufacturing jobs they necessitated and a product that was designed to be bought by its creators.

Apple is a different story altogether. The corporation is creating wealth for the wealthy, and interesting products for those that can afford them, but there is a distinct lack of utilitarian mindsets that is very vogue in our business world.

Don't forget all of those Verizon people who go their first smartphone with the Droid and other similar devices mainly due to the iPhone not being available at the time. Their contracts were up for renewal right around the time of the 4S's launch.

Tim Cook just reiterated that full convergence between Mac and iOS is not happening, and that other companies converging their OS's are doing so "defensively".

Tim Cook's response to the question of is Apple interested in converging tablet and laptop markets.

When you transcribe every day in your job, it makes it easy.
Products are about tradeoffs. You begin to make tradeoffs to the point where what you have left at the end of the day doesn't please everyone. You can converge a toaster and refrigerator, but those things aren't going to be pleasing to the user.

The tablet market is huge; we said that day one. We were using them here [at Apple]. it occurred to us that there was so much you could do. The reasons to use those would be so broad. The iPad has taken off not only in consumer in a meaningful way, but education and enterprise. The applications are so easy to make meaningful for someone. There's such an abundance of those - as the ecosystem gets bigger and better - and we continue to double down on products. The limit is nowhere in sight.

Through the last 4 quarters [through launch], we've sold 67 million [iPads]. It took us 24 years to sell that many Macs and 5 years for that many iPods and 3 years for that many iPhones. I think iPad - it's a profound product. The breadth of it is incredible, and the appeal of it is universal. I could not happier with being in the market at the level of which we're innovating in the product and ecoystem here is incredible.

In terms of the market itself, IDC, Gartner, and Forrester have some numbers out there. 325 [million] by 2015, Foster is 375 [million] - they're in the mid 300s, which is about where the PC market is today. 2015 is only three years from now. Even the more formal predictors outside of us are beginning to see these lines crossed.

Having said that, I also believe there's a very good market for the MacBook Air. We continue to innovate in that product, but I do think it appeals to someone who has a little bit different requirements. You wouldn't want to put these two together because you end up compromising and don't end up pleasing the user. To make the compromise of convergence, we're not going to that party. Others might from a defensive point of view, particularly.

We're going to play in both.

Also you know how many iPhone users haven't upgraded since 3GS/4, waiting for iPhone 5

That alone gets you bulk of the sales, then those users who want to upgrade with every iteration, then the stragglers at the end

Now take over the TV space. Do it.

I honestly don't think they are that interested.

They are selling 10's of millions of super-high-margin devices that share many common hardware parts (hence the super high margins), the same OS platform, etc. all backed by the largest and most profitable ever-expanding down-loadable content store on the planet.

They are also heavily aided by the loss-leader subsidization of hardware sales via cell and data carriers.

And they are doing it without these devices having any native "TV" support.

Meanwhile, they treat Apple TV as a second-rate product.. don't give it an App Store or a highly useful input device that would allow an App Store to flourish, etc.

Instead? We get things like AirPlay... which.. encourages you to buy one of their mobile devices.

I think it's smart business. The people trying to shove their way into our TV-lives aren't making anywhere near the amount of money..

I think it's brilliant. (but man do I want an Apple TV w/ an App Store)

And the actual "Apple based television" stuff?

I'm the lone wolf not buying it at all. It just doesn't make any financial sense to me.. that is a market full of struggling giants w/ low margins... why would Apple jump in again?

I've always said full convergence wouldn't make sense, but it's comforting to hear it from the top.

They sold 35 million in three months. "Those who can afford them" is a large group indeed. It is also likely impossible to overstate the effect Apple and its suppliers have had in local economies and populations surrounding these large factories.

My company is rolling out iPads to its sales reps and designers to show off our work to clients. The Tablet market it only going to get bigger in the coming years and it looks like only Apple will be the one to profit of it. Insane.

The best part about this news is you know that deep down it's bothering carriers...sort of.

I remember how my sister age 20 wanted to get an ip4s @ a verizon store last week and every and I mean every sales attendant there was PUSHING Android phones down her throat and in her ass HARD, LITERALLY.

it's so much better, you can do so much more, but a last she was dead set on a white ip4s to go along with her MBP....

They showed her a galaxy nexus and how great it was but shes like lol nope I have to fit in and I like the social aspect of the ip4s

The apple machine is motherfucking rolling thunder.... and it rolls along one hipster @ a time.

Personally, I would love a fridge that made toast on the side.

BAD ANALOGY, TIM

Totally.. I'm sure your sister would have rooted that Nexus when she got home so she can SSH into her phone... and man, to think of all the flash-only web sites she could be browsing!

;)

They are still supply constrained on the new iPad. Selling everything they can make.

That's with 151% growth.

Sounds like you're implying that people buy iPhones just to fit in or because they are "hipsters" (meaningless term).

Perhaps she looked at the Galaxy Nexus and wasn't impressed with it's supposed 'greatness'? The interface is ugly as hell for one thing (opinions!)

Tim Cook reiterating that Apple would prefer to settle than battle.

"It's very important that Apple doesn't become the developer for the world. We need people to develop their own stuff."

Much less vitriol than Steve Jobs.
