Don't expect a refresh so soon. March 2013 is when we'll likely see a new(er) iPad.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's right and there's an updated version. With at least the new lightning connector.

Have seen more than one rumor pointing to a refresh with the IZGO screen, lightning port, and A6 chip.

We'll see though. I'm not holding my breath on it, but I'm certainly not buying one until next week either way.

Just remember; there's a reason the iPad was called "The New iPad" and not the iPad 3.

I think they were trying to move away from numbers in their devices, which is why its a new iPod Touch, new Macbook Air, etc.

I think they've realized that numbers fuel update-itis and sales, though.

I thought that, but then why is the iPhone 5 not called "The New iPhone"?

I'm calling it now: they'll announce a new iPad during this event, probably smaller. You heard it here first!

I can't wait to see the new "mini" smart covers or maybe an iPad-specific "Loop" accessory.

I would not be surprised if they update the New iPad with lightning. New iPad becomes New New iPad.
I almost think that's a given at this point. I'll be surprised if they don't give them a refresh. It could be subtle and off-screen, like how they update their MB lines sometimes.

Probably.
The iPad 2 they sell that launched with the New iPad were faster than the originals.

I really don't buy into the refresh of The New iPad. I believe in an iPad Mini.

IF they decide to refresh The New iPad it'll get little mention and be a "stealth" update on Apple Store like their Smart Covers -> Smart Cases and with iPad 4 launching in Fall 2013.

Oh, yeah. That's what I mean. I'd only expect the pin adapter to change.

Its probably iPad Mini or something Mac. iPad 4 is for early next year.

According to one of our supplier at work (who are one of the biggest retailers in the UK), they've been told that they've got a 'Mac mini server' confirmed for delivery in December.

You guys talking about a refreshed iPad are so wrong. It's not happening.

And seriously, you think it'll include an updated screen, a new processor, and a new port? Those are all iPad 4 things.

No. A new port is not an iPad 4 thing, it's a "makes sense" thing. Updated screen and new processor? Probably not (or at least not noticeable enough to be noteworthy), but to think that they will basically be selling the two iPad SKU's and have the lower end model contain the new port, but the high end not, seems off. It doesn't need to even be mentioned. To introduce a lower end product line and have it contain the 'up to date' standards but not in the higher end, makes little sense.

How many people will be buying the iPad retina over the iPad mini from now till the 2013 iPad 4 event? That's a ton of consumers who will be using the 30 pin over the new connector and alongside it. Seems like it could easily be a quiet refresh sort of thing to lessen the headache of future consumers having to deal with multiple cables.

A guy buys an iPad retina for work/himself, and an iPad mini for the home/his kids. You're telling me he would have to worry about cable compatibility? Just seems like a dumb move for Apple not to refresh.

You guys with an iPad already, what do you plan on using the Mini for if you're single (or the only one using them)?

Because I use my iPad 2 to consume and play games at home while watching Netflix at school. I now think of getting the Mini for Netflix use, drawing and note writing with my stylus at school and when I'm around. Using iPhone 5 as a hotspot for the WiFi iPad Mini. A few games on it too. I guess I could do with a 16GB iPad Mini, even though I'm almost running out of space sometimes on my 32GB iPhone and iPad.

You're putting words into my mouth. I stated this is the first tablet where Apple doesn't lead spec wise with value. When the original iPad came out, no one could match it in price and quality. Now others can. I'm not speaking about the rest of the stuff you're going on about. I agree with you on that.

Ahh, gotcha. Sorry for the confusion.

Silent update with new port for the iPad 3 is starting to make sense to me. Consumer confusion doesn't really matter when the iPad is bundled with the appropriate cable.

that doesn't make sense to me. If you're already taking the ipad 2 to school, why not use that for note taking etc?

Unless you're thinking of replacing the ipad 2 with a mini. And in that case personally I'd only swap if I found the ipad 2 unwieldy or too heavy to carry around with me - and in the case of a school backpack I think i'd manage.

Because the Mini would be smaller and lighter and that's a huge factor for me. Besides my iPad 2 have taken damage so I wouldn't get as much as others by selling it.

I thought that, but then why is the iPhone 5 not called "The New iPhone"?
Because Apple only makes one iPhone. They can't cover a wide enough price range with the limited configurations they have, so they also sell iPhones from previous generations.

This is also how the iPad business was working up until now, but with multiple products and a ton of configurations, they don't need to sell iPads from previous generations anymore.

Well, they still sell the iPad 2.

Well, they still sell the iPad 2.

I suspect the reason to keep around the old iPad model (iPad 2) was probably threefold, and will not happen again.

1) Quickly put out a lower point of entry for the market, which is increasingly being brought down in price due to cheap Android tablets, and Amazon's subsidy of their Kindle tablet.

2) Reduce power usage of the A5 for devices such as the 4inch iPod touch, and rumored iPad Mini/Air

3) Have a chip they have a lot of experience producing shrunk so they can test run the 32nm process.

LCfiner: My guess is that they will keep it on sale until they run through existing stock.

hmm... actually, I'm gonna predict that they still sell the ipad 2 after next week. I might be wrong but I think they want to have a product out there for people who want a bigger screen and a price under 500.

Oh, I'm also predicting absolutely zero main ipad revisions next week. I think it'll be confusing to have a "new ipad" with 30 pin dock connector sold for 6 months and a "new ipad" with lightning connector sold for 6 months. and then another new ipad with lightning and HW upgrades right after that. I think they'll do a clean jump next spring with everything updated on the 10" ipad.

If the iPad 3 gets any modifications, it will all be internal and invisible. Nothing major.

Not once they offer the iPad Mini, hence the "up until now".

The 3rd gen iPad will take its place next year but I don't see why they'd drop the iPad 2 between now and the 4th gen.

I think the 3rd gen will probably get a quiet lightning connector update. It doesn't make sense for them to continue selling millions of them this holiday alongside iPad minis with lightning (and iPhone 5)

That seems unlikely to me. Why would they have that many configurations? iPad 3rd gen + iPad 4th gen + iPad Mini 1st gen + iPad Mini 2nd gen?

I'm saying going forward it will be like the MacBooks. When refreshed the old ones aren't sold anymore (the reason why it's just called iPad now). With the iPad and iPad Mini they will have more than 12 configurations covering a price range of 200-800$

They can cover that wide because they have two products now. There will only be one iPhone so they will keep selling the old generations to cover wide.

Gonna have the same internals as the new iPod touch minus the retina display.. I say $299 for the 8gb and the space doubles with $100 increments.

I understand the logic behind a revised iPad 3 with Lightning connector, but I feel like we would have had a component leak at this point if it was happening.

Absolutely psyched about the Mac mini refresh. Long overdue.

Almost equally as excited about the 13" retina and iMac but mainly the Mac mini.

The 13" rMBP is definitely in my future. Probably the next refresh. Need to replace my 2009 13" MBP eventually.

Might just be a simple manufacture retooling that is just ramping up. Or maybe not, we'll see I guess.

If the 27" iMac is refreshed, I'll be grabbing one in the next couple months.

It's not that the 2009 iMac I have now is plodding, but I'm looking for an excuse to get a model with the dual SSD and HDD option. I want an SSD boot drive real bad. I know that this is where I'll see massive speed gains.

Windows 7 wasn't the seventh iteration of Windows. Seems like that worked out okay for Microsoft.

True, in that consumers are largely uncritical. It is still odd in the sense that Apple introduced numbered releases with the fourth iPhone, the iPhone 4, but then proceded to break the new system by mixing in the S nomenclature. There's no way to make Apple's own decisions consistent with each other regarding iPhone naming.
