What a clever invitation. I love the 5 as the shadow. I also love that because it seems it'll be called the iPhone 5. Eat a dick to all of you pedants who were crying about others calling the next iPhone the iPhone 5. Looks like your pedantic posts backfired.

No, not yet!

The more that I think about it, the more that I am starting to believe that the next iPhone will be called "The new iPhone" with the 5 in the invite meaning the event next week will celebrate 5 years of the iPhone brand (via iPhone stats over the past 5 years, and the unveiling of the next iPhone).

I could be wrong but Apple's usually a bit more clever with the invites. I think the 5 = "iPhone 5" is too obvious.

Here's an article breaking down the new unibody design from a designers perspective. Great read, especially for those who believe it's simply a taller iPhone 4 with a metal back: http://thetechblock.com/the-unibody-iphone

Those aren't separate pieces -- those are part of that same unibody piece. They are the most important detail of this design. Having those bosses integrated into the material allows for the part to be stronger, thinner, and lighter. It condenses several parts into one better part.

Thinness is a major feature of this design. Take a look at your iPhone 4/4S from the side. Now imagine that the new design is only as thick as the metal band. That's a big deal. From my estimates, that would make this design anywhere from 2-3mm thinner than the iPhone 4S. That sounds small, but it's a huge difference. That's as much as 32 percent thinner. As a point of comparison, the Retina MacBook Pro is only 25 percent thinner than the old MacBook Pro.

At first glance it doesn't appear to be dramatically different from its predecessor, but when you really dig into it, there are a ton of changes that make it appreciably nicer. If you aren't excited about it now, you will be when you see one in person. Classic Apple design refinement.

Can't wait.

Unless if it goes horribly wrong I'll order it on the day. Then I gotta sell off my 4S and hope that the loss isn't too great.

I finally get to decide on what smart phone I'm getting! Yay!

I was waiting on iPhone 5 to decide between it and the Galaxy S3.

It's pretty much been day and date with the phones release in the past has it not? Expect the same here.
Just to note: the iPhone is expected to start shipping 5 days after the 12th in the US and in the first week of October worldwide. For those wondering.

My iphone 4 is a huge part of my day to day and still feels perfect but I'm looking forward to upgrading to this, should be fun having a newer and slightly different iphone (the 4 was my first and only smarthphone so far). Hopefully there's some exciting surprises but after the unexcitings 4S and the new ipad I'm not holding my breath.

True. I've never really bothered remembering since I've only now just owned an iPhone. :lol

Wasn't sure if I should just jump back to iOS 5, or keep the iOS 6 Beta on my phone.

Really?

Has that happened before? October seems awful late. At least for the UK. I need mah iPhone.

the iPhone 4S conference was the worst conference Apple has ever conducted, simply because they had nothing worth talking. The big update was a software update which was purposely held back from the iPhone 4 to help differentiate the 4S from the 4.

Im hyped for it - but after the One X and Galaxy S3 it will be difficult to get me hyped again. Especially with many games and apps nowadays getting Android version the same time as their iOS counter parts.

They definitely need some kind of new/unexpected killer feature.

I will upgrade since my 3G is starting to kill me slowly each day, but man I wish Apple would have gone further with the design. I know a new larger screen and true unibody is something cool, but I so wanted to see them do something new in terms of design, something more then "hey, remember that phone from three years ago? We did it, again. Twice.".

I so wanted to teardrop rumor from last year to be true, but it never will. Oh well, maybe in two years.

If the international iPhone 5 launch is Oct. 5th then I'm guessing we'll have our iPad mini event set for Oct 17th or 24th.

My guess is for Oct. 17th so they'll have them ready to ship and deliver on Oct 26th.

Finally I'll be taking the smartphone plunge with this one...my nokia slider phone has been butt of too many jokes for far too long now. Hope they still have some surprises with it following the rumors!

If memory serves, the launch will be the following Friday, the 21st.
Yea this is what I'm thinking.

How long was the pre order time for the 4S? Do they do it so that it arrives on the 21st? Assuming you get in there first that is.

I'm definitely excited for them to pull back the curtain on the "new iphone", or whatever they decide to call it. I'll purchase regardless. I dropped my 4 a couple months back and have been stuck with a cracked screen ever since.

Anyone's guess really. Some people think that just because there is a Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 at $199 that Apple will release an iPad at that price. My guess is $299 for the base model and then going up from there with various storage options. Apple likes to make money off of hardware unlike Amazon and Google.

I'm guessing $200. Cook was adamant about not leaving price umbrellas.

Also, why are they going to call this the iPhone 5? Why not "The New iPhone" ala the iPad?
Because that's damn annoying when you're trying to compare and discuss devices. Or at least that's why I wish they do go with 5.

Just depends if they want a margin on this thing. I still think a $299 will be fine even with $199 and $249 competitors. No one is making money off of the $199 price point. Apple likes money.

You have to think that at some point, the iPad mini will outsell the 9.7in iPad. Apple would be foolish to canabalize a product that has a good margin with one that potentially wouldn't. That's why I'm thinking a $299 price gets them their margin, allows for enough premium over the other players, and still gets them in a great price point for pretty much all buyers looking for a tablet. Amazon and Google will still have their $199 8GB tablets that won't make them any money. Apple rolls in with a 16GB $299 iPad mini to clean up the competition and obtain a decent margin.

I should take a cue from Apple.

Just make my posts a little longer

and also bold the top and bottom.

It's guaranteed to work.

I should take a cue from Samsung.

Just slightly elongate my posts

And also bold the beginning and end.

It's a certainty to work.

This may be make or break it for me. I might jump ship to android if it's just a taller iPhone 4S. But then again I have invested about $200 in apps, so apple do have me by the balls.

Well now 9to5 mac is saying ipods are coming next week

http://9to5mac.com/2012/09/04/ipods...-generation-iphone-at-next-weeks-apple-event/

so it looks like my earlier comments might already be moot.

hey, I'm all for new ipods sooner rather than later. especially if that rumor of a beefed up ipod nano with wifi is true.

I'd be glad to have been wrong before :)

Well ok then. So maybe we have the iPhone along with the updated iPod line next week and then the new Macs, "new" iPad with the small dock connector and the iPad mini in the October event? Perhaps.

If they change the dock connector im screwed, I have one in my office, my car, my room, my study room, my kitchen, my living room and a keychain I use for when im out and about.

I understand it is an old design but damn its going to hurt.

I guess I gotta wait for the cheap DealExtreme dock/cables once they get around to copying them :(, it will still be a fortune to replace them all.

I'm more interested in the internals of the next iPhone. iPhones usually have top of the line hardware. Has anything other than design leaked? Specs?

Expect an adapter to come out with it to ease the transition.
$39.00

Slightly related, Amazon are offering ~$300 for a 32GB iPhone 4. Anyone know how long the trade in window is open for if I submit it now, but send it in when the new phone comes?

edit:
"Ship your items within 7 calendar days of submitting the trade-in."

There goes that idea.

Bahaha no chance in hell. Looks like an '08 product.

Sold my 64GB 4S for $440 in anticipation of the new iPhone.

In other news, AT&T finally did me good or realized they profited enough on me to give me a break. Getting unlimited text for still an asinine amount of $20 for the life of my service and $50 credit when I told them I was having problems paying my bill. I don't have a problem with AT&T's service so I'm pretty stoked.
