Slightly related, Amazon are offering ~$300 for a 32GB iPhone 4. Anyone know how long the trade in window is open for if I submit it now, but send it in when the new phone comes?

edit:
"Ship your items within 7 calendar days of submitting the trade-in."

There goes that idea.

Dust off your old RAZR from 2006 for a week?

You can ship about 3 days after the 7 day mark and be ok, I do a lot of amazon trade in. Just make sure you print it out though because after the 7 days it's locked.

I know there may be some biased opinions but I have had the HTC Evo 4g for 2 years, and want to try out a iPhone finally. Any idea how it compares to the Galaxy S3 yet or wait until next week? I know there's been various leaks of info.

For those out of the loop, this is what everyone's expecting at this point;

I'm sure the material and metal color tones will look better in the actual product, though. Probably a charcoal aluminum for an overall black look rather than that glaring light grey on pitch black..

I'm more interested in the internals of the next iPhone. iPhones usually have top of the line hardware. Has anything other than design leaked? Specs?

Shrunken A5 processor was the thinking prior to some claimed leaks from last week showing an A6 in there. LTE seems to be a given. 1 gig, maybe 2 of RAM seems to be a given. Headphone jack is on the bottom. Most likely 8 pin dock connector/charging port that is like Magsafe in that you can put the plug in upside down and no problem. Those are the biggest things I can think of.

This will be one of the most important presentations in tech history, simply for where Apple finds itself today, and where it wants to see itself in the future. Exciting times.

Going to do the same. Tired of 4S. So buggy.

My 4S was perfect other than my unintentional drops and scratches. Using my Lumia 900 and I already miss iOS. I would've sold i after I got the new iPhone but I figured I had a Lumia sitting around, might as well get as much as I can before the new iPhone is released. $440 seemed like a good value for me and the buyer (Who spent 20 minutes thoroughly examining the phone). My phone was probably in 6.5/10 shape.

small thing but I noticed that the bottom mounted headphone jack will make car hands free docks - ones that don't use bluetooth - easier to use.

if you look at the ones there now, there's a need for a loose cable to hook into the headphone jack. so it's a hassle to connect after plugging the phone into the dock. Now the dock connection and headphone output (containing the needed mic input) are both on the bottom. allows for simpler connections to car docks with hands free functionality.

That mockup posted above looks really poor. It's gonna look so much better. Mockup also looks too thick. The class shouldn't stick out in the front, doesn't match with the beveled front edge.

If it's going to be that elongated it should've been a bit wider, tbh. Gotta see how it feels in my hand first. :x

thats great!

I have a 4. It runs like fucking garbage. :(
With iOS6, it does, you're right. I have no idea what Apple did with the io5 and 6, but they progressively made the 4 slower, for no apparent reason, as nothing has really changed in the UI that I could pin down as a reason for such increased sluggishness. Their iOS division might just take the crown off Adobe for crapping out on UI performance for no visible reason.

Still, I'd rather live with the phone, sluggish as it is, than drop down $$$ on an upgrade like this.

Retroactive Planned Obsolescence.

Jim Dalrymple and AllThingsD have never been wrong.
Not everyone in here follows this stuff like us Apple-people, so when you say 'confirmed' some people will get the impression that you mean it's been Apple-confirmed. ;p

Outside of some Wii level shakeup to hardware, all the "newness" comes courtesy of iOS updates. Its all about software really.
If we were still on the 3GS design, but a bit thinner and some tweaks here and there, you think people would be fine with that? There sort of needs to be a sense of 'newness' for this to work for Apple.

I don't think that'll be a big deal with this new iPhone (not for most people, anyway), but going down the line it definitely will be if things aren't changed up in a significant 3GS-to-4 fashion.

the only reason other companies keep changing their form factors so drastically so often is because they haven't found anything that works yet. Samsung found something that works with their galaxy line, and those phones all look pretty similar.

None the less, they'll probably follow the same pattern as always. 3G->3GS, 4->4S, 5->5S?
Can't really compare them to other companies in this regard. They only have one product, unlike the competition raking in from multiple products. The shtick with Apple is that they have enough cloud over everyone that when they release their annual upgrades, people buy-in. But that is assuming it's worth it. Large part of that reaction is based on the physical look and not the specs or software updates.

Even if this is the perfect form factor, people will grow tired of it naturally, eventually, and the annual hardware upgrades won't receive anywhere near as much hype. That's why i'm interested to see what Ive has next.

And this has only been escalating with Apple because they know they need that extra push to get some people to buy into their annual iDevice upgrades.

The iPhone 5 is an odd name because the 5 doesn't represent anything.

iPhone 3G= Self explanatory
iPhone 3GS= 3G(Speed)
iPhone 4= 4th iPhone
iPhone 4S= 4th iPhone(Siri)
iPhone 5= ?
Maybe because you can have 5 rows of icons lol

Maybe the 5 in the invitation means 5 products. The new iPhone and refreshes of the 4 iPod models. Or it can represent a new software feature they haven't announced yet.

Also i'm hoping for a new nano.

The iPhone 4 design is so good, there's no reason to drastically redesign it just to be different. Despite that, we will see at the event that the entire device has been reengineered. They're definitely going to trot out its unibody engineering.

5 years of iPhone, could be anything, it's a tease IMO. It's not called the iPhone 5 until they announce it.

There was a report earlier this year saying this will be the biggest iPhone launch yet because of the number of people who will be eligible for upgrade. Of courses every year is the biggest launch yet, but the upgrade numbers were interesting. Lots of people leaving AT&T this year too.

The design just refuses to grow on me, although the Apple porn shots will make it look better.

Still reminds me of the fat Nano, looks off.

I agree, but it doesn't change the fact that it will definitely affect them moving forward. More importantly, it'll affect us.

4S was a sign of what's to come, in terms of how they dealt with Siri. That was intentional, they knew damn well there wasn't enough in the 4S alone to grab people so they introduced another software incentive.

Lots of people in the beta thread were saying that the later betas ran really well in the 4. Did another update change that?

So that means that Nokia, Apple, Motorola, and HTC all have September events planned.

There's never been a better time to have an upgrade.

Same. Width would make a world of difference. Seems like a really minor upgrade that they absolutely had to do.

Yup. They just needed to hit that "4-inch!!" spec mark and this was the safest/simplest way to do it, especially as far as iOS goes. Still would've preferred a 'real' 4" iPhone.
yes, i'm back with that shit :p

I'm not so sure. Even in the actual semi-assembled unit (using the real parts) it has a similar asymmetrical edge. Back is flat simply because of the aluminum unibody, front still might need that raised glass.

man I really hope those new earbud rumors are true, I'd love a better design
Really hoping that this secretly steals the show. I want them to be somehow amazingly improved in quality/comfortability. I mean, it's been fucking years coming, maybe Apple R&D churned out something special.

This will be one of the most important presentations in tech history, simply for where Apple finds itself today, and where it wants to see itself in the future. Exciting times.
I think the iPad mini presentation will be more historical/important for the company. That'll be the first time we see post-Jobs Apple actually reveal/announce/introduce/release a brand new product line.

I don't count MBPr. :p

Any advice on dusting off my old 3G to use after I sell my current 4S in anticipation? Just want to be sure there are no show stoppers regarding activation, iTunes or contacts really. Apps not working is fine.

How many here are buying this device despite their 4S/3Gs working completely fine? I can understand why someone who has a buggy, or damaged, iPhone would be tempted to upgrade but if your phone is fine? Are you not effectively paying hundreds of dollars for a new case?

Why buy a bigger TV or a faster computer?

I'm doing that. Generally costs $100-150 to upgrade every year. Quite easy to break even or profit if you're clever/ambitious.

We don't even have a clue of what's inside the phone, so saying it's just a new case is a little premature right now.
