So I was just rejected by this clinician/tutor position at a children's learning center. It's pay was 13 bucks an hour which seemed awesome for a first job. This is like my 5th rejection and I feel like I'm out of options. I think I can easily get a job at some Dunkin' Donuts that's opening but it feels embarrassing settling for that. A bachelor's degree in psychology is such shit.

I got the job! Induction is tomorrow, Friday and Saturday. First official working day is Tuesday 4th (I think)
Same thing I am tell anyone with a Psy degree. Go get MSW or MFT instead of wasting time with entry level job.
You sent an email? Whoever your contact is probably gets in in the morning with a shitload of emails in his inbox. You're not the most important thing in his day, despite what you may think just because they're hiring. Calling the person is a much better way to follow up than an email. They can ignore your email much easier than a phonecall.
I honestly wouldn't take it personal. 95% of HR departments are mismanaged and understaffed. Learn from it and continue to do your best on all future opportunities that present themselves.
The sad fact is that HR is a non-revenue element of a business, but still necessary. This effects everyone in the pre and post employment phases of that organization, but doesn't reflect on balance sheets aside from cost. As a result they are never staffed appropriately, held appropriately accountable for their actions, or incentivized to be efficient.

Ugh, time to start the job hunt in Northern VA again. It's tough, there's a lot of government jobs, but it takes forever for them to get back to you. Anyone have any good suggestions for youth program/marketing and media jobs?
I doubt based on previous conversations imo, this guy goes through all his emails. The week leading to my interview he was sending me stuff every other day and has my name as the header.
I can try to come up with ' what if ' scenarios, but I'm at a point where it's either you are going to hire me or don't. I won't stress and be eager to jump on board if you aren't.

I feel bad for my friend, he's an out of work game designer with a lot of experience who is about to run out of unemployment. I think part of it is his fault for settings sights too high initially (he was trying to get director/lead jobs only).
I've had a couple of friends with this problem, where they set there sights way too high and even after prolonged unemployment weren't willing to reconsider. I mean I get it, you have 5 years or 10 years of doing something you don't want to take a job at a lower level than your last one, but at some point its better than not working at all, right?

Well, the thing is a lot of companies are wary of would-be employees who might be settling for lesser positions. The idea is, I guess, these employees won't be satisfied and will either demand promotion when none is available or jump ship at the first opportunity.
I have a tip for people here. It may sound obvious, but still:
Include cool facts on your resume/CV. Not any random junk, but things that are interesting and potentially unique to yourself.

I went to an interview today and one of the managers asked regarding one of my hobbies. I had subtly stated that I was a music geek and played the guitar. It's all about making yourself look unique. Not too much. Just a slight sip of spice that makes the CV/resume looks less boring.
Now I just hope they want to see me for that second interview... *fingers crossed*

It's so cool when you find people that care about gaming. It's getting more accepted but I think there's still quite some stigma about. My current job (laid off, hence my interview) actually has quite a few people that are into gaming. The most surprising thing was me meeting a manager that loves the Souls games as much I do. Talk about a coincidence, lol.
At the end of the day it's pretty difficult with hobbies and interests. Impossible to know what the recruiters and company think about it. Just a chance that the reader finds it interesting.

However, I see it as no different to a university course. And at the end of it, I will have entry to a decent career in the force.
Also, amazingly, they would pay ALL of my travel costs. I would only have to pay basic utility bills and my phone, and I would take my car off the road and just use the train. I won't have any rent to pay as my parents are buying me a house.
I think I should go for it.

Been job hunting since January and haven't worked since March. Applied for well over 100 positions at this point, had some interviews but the outcome is always the same. It's tough because I'm a single parent and full-time student and my daughter started kindergarten this year so it's even harder to find a place to work at that will allow me to get off in time to get to the bus stop for my daughter.
And if it's not that, it doesn't help that I'm a student with classes in the morning. I can't work at night because I have no family or friends to watch my daughter and I don't have the money to hire a babysitter nor do I want someone putting my daughter to bed besides me.
I feel trapped. I have joint custody and I'm stuck in Podunk, MS because I was stationed here in 2009. Since then, I got a divorce and my ex does not want to move back to our home state of Illinois. That's where all our family is.
Anyway, I'm reaching desperation mode now, even contemplated going to the casino (horrible idea, not doing it) or finding some sort of work-at-home thing (too good to be true). I feel like giving up. I'm going to school for computer networking but can't find any office jobs or anything close to working with computers to do in the meantime. I've even applied at fast food places and stuff. Today i had my second meeting with one of them and they are already willing
to offer me a contract and they expect me to sign it.
Tomorrow im meeting with the other company for the second time
this company has my preferences, if they offer me a contract and i'm signing that one. How should i handle/communicate with the company where i didn't sign? Anyone experience with this sort of situation?

Just be honest and tell them you cannot commit to the role. Thats all you have to say. Its your life.
I had to do that today after accepting the police job and the company was completely fine with it and even asked if I mind letting them know if circumstances change for me in the future.

I already thought about something like that, one job is actually going through a recruitment agancy while the other is something i applied to myself. Time will tell i first need to have that second meeting with the other company.

Had a meeting with the other company today they also offered a contract with more extras.
Like a lease car and work laptop(software engineer position) now i need to think of a way to not burn bridges when i call the recruiter next monday.
I got a job offer today!!! It's from a large oil and gas company for a position as a Pricing Analyst. I was an unemployed graduate student and job hunting for four months, sent out probably around 60 applications. I have until the 7th to accept.
The thing is I also believe I'm going to get an equal or better offer from another company for a project management job. During my interview they asked me to apply for a more senior position than the one I originally applied for. I'm in consideration for both jobs there and expect I'll at least get an offer for the first one. But the problem is I have no idea when I'll hear from them next and for the second position I applied to there will also probably be a second round interview (third after the initial screening I did). I didn't think I'd be in this situation but they're both good positions I'm just conflicted about the situation

Accept, then if the other ever call you back and you prefer that position, then explain to the first that you thank them very much for the opportunity but a better offer has been made yada yada yada.
Just don't pass up on something because you think something else is a "lock". I got burned by that once. Or twice.
So I was supposed to hear from the place I interviewed with last monday today, but no dice. Sent a thank you mail with an inquiry about the process wednesday, got no answer. Tried calling them today, noone answered.
This is bar none the weirdest place and interview I've done. I honestly have no idea what to expect. I think I did a great interview, but the CEO wasn't present. The CEO however added me on LinkedIn and we exchanged a couple of words over the week. But now I have no news.
Maybe they got really busy, I don't know. I think we've all had similar situations where people said "We'll call you back on X, for sure!", and they don't, and we think we're fucked, but it's never a sure sign of anything. I'd just really like to know what to expect. xD
In other news, I passed all the tests for the Federal Government (Canada) for some call center job (with insane pay) for the Revenue Agency. Anyone has any experience with that? Like, is it guaranteed that I'll be called once early 2015 rolls around (as the job would start then?), or I just did like four tests over four months just to maybe get called?

Guys, I need some help with my resume.. Could anyone list some sites or some advice in creating a resume that is actually decent? I just feel totally lost right now. I'm 26, with 6 years of IT work and a bachelors degree in CIS, but for some reason I'm having a hard time coming up with a resume that I can be happy with. I know how important a resume is, so I want to create one that I am proud of, but I just see so many conflicting reports about them that I'm just a little lost.
I see people say one page is enough if you don't have much working experience, which I mean have a little bit, but nothing really to run home about. Also, should we include an objective and a cover letter? Sometimes I see that we need to make sure to have both, while other times I see not to include either.. Does your old university have a career center? Can you have them look at your resume? I'm 26 and had them look at my resume last year.

As far as Civil Engineering jobs go, everyone wants a designer, not a CAD technician. I've used CAD in a variety of fields from topography to civil engineering. Unfortunately, we didn't get to design anything, which is what most companies are looking for around here.
As far as where I'm applying, I've been trying to re-transition back into IT since I have new skills/certs and making it my primary focus whereas it was my backup focus for the last ten years.

I'm not experienced with this so take it with a grain of salt. But I'd call that company, tell them you were lead to believe you were likely to get a job there, you have been offered a job somewhere else and you need to know by the 7th if you are hired otherwise it will be too late. Best case it might push your price up, worst case they understand?

I have trouble representing it concisely. These items are not part of my job description, but are certainly accomplishments:
I was the project leader for the manufacturing departments Kaizen event with the focus increasing customer satisfaction. This basically boils down to increasing productivity.Throughput increased by 142%
I was the team leader of an APS (accelerated problem solving) project with the challenge of improving throughput and reducing attended time. Productivity was increased by 27% and 55% respectively.
Lastly, I was recommended to travel to Mexico with the engineers to see a sister MFG facility and bring back process improvement ideas, which was a success. Ended up increasing productivity by another 12% due to this.
Of course I can go back and get dollar amounts, or give the UPPH increases if its more valuable.

I guess it's a good thing every time I've sent a resume out I've gotten an interview. Nothing has turned into a job though. The closest one said I was the top canidate but they'd let me know when the companies budget allowed to hire a full time salary. In the meantime keep learning the program they use. I decided not to really keep trying because I'd be trading a 50 minute commute for a 40 minute one. I've realized anything over 20 to 30 minutes will make me hate the job no matter what. I had a new interview that seems promising. They told me there were 50 applications and they narrowed them down to 2 weeks of interviews. Not sure how many that translates too. But they liked my work a lot. Should I just wait it out and hope for the best? I sent a thank you email at the end of the day I had the interview. Last Friday was the end of the interview canidates. Should I send a follow up email with more work this Monday? To check in?

I could do with some advice. I have been working as a Library assistant in a public library for five years. It is a permanent but part-time position, and my hours have steadily decreased due to cuts in government funding. There is no scope for career progression beyond my assistant role and there are further cuts planned in the next tax year. My current job satisfaction is good though: I enjoy what I am doing and I get on great with the people who work there.
My ideal job though would be to work in archives/record management and there is a job that has come up in a police archives in the another county (it would be a long commute but I could live with it). It is full-time which is great, but the position is only for 12 months.
So my question is: would I crazy to leave a permanent position for a temporary job in the current job market? My brain says stick with the current job until another job with a permanent contract comes up. But my heart says fortune favours the brave and this could be a real opportunity to build a career in a field that I ultimately want to work in. What should I do?
