Let me show you a couple of examples of how people talk in Colombia, different regions:

The coast, this is what Ixquerlat refers as a very noticeable accent. This one is understandable comparable to the normal "coast" accent.

If he were going to spend several years in Barcelona, I'd also suggest learning Catalan instead of Spanish. But virtually everyone there speaks Spanish + you can travel the rest of Spain and still utilize it whereas Catalan is mostly irrelevant (except for in Valencia and Mallorca/Menorca). So yeah, I'd say he should go with Spanish.

Básicamente hay tres tipos de palabras: agudas, graves y esdrújulas (y sobreesdrújulas y sobresobreesdrújulas y chingatumadresdrújulas, pero todas esas entran en esta última categoría). Para diferenciarlas simplemente hay que encontrar la sílaba tónica de la palabra que buscamos escribir. Tomemos por ejemplo el caso de carácter contra caracter, utilizado ya antes en este tema. Ca-rác-ter tiene su sílaba tónica en la penúltima, la “rac”, mientras que la sílaba tónica en ca-rac-ter es la última, “ter”. Esto nos ayuda a diferenciar entre dos palabras cuyo significado es distinto, pero su ortografía es similar.

Ahora, eso no significa que todas las palabras siempre lleven tilde. Hay ciertas reglas elementares a seguir:

• Agudas: Se acentúan cuando la última sílaba es la tónica y la palabra termina en “ene”, “ese” o vocal.
  
  acción: ac-ción ~ Termina en ene, por lo que se acentúa.
  menester: me-nes-ter ~ Termina en una erre, por lo que no se acentúa.
  
  
• Graves: Se acentúan cuando la penúltima sílaba es la tónica y la palabra no termina en “ene”, “ese” o vocal.
  
  lápiz: lá-piz ~ Termina en zeta, por lo que se acentúa.
  escritorio: es-cri-to-rio ~ Termina en vocal, por lo que no se acentúa.
  
  
• Esdrújulas: Se acentúan siempre que la sílaba tónica es la antepenúltima. La regla aplica para palabras cuya sílaba tónica se encuentra incluso antes que la antepenúltima.
  
  esdrújula: es-drú-ju-la ~ Se explica solito.

Hay otras reglas de acentuación, claro está. Tenemos acentos diacríticos (qué contra qué, cómo en vez de como, etcétera) y también están los hiatos, los cuales son acentuados para separar sílabas (día, por ejemplo, no es un diptongo; la tilde en la i nos indica que se tratan de dos sílabas). A eso súmale los adverbios (claramente, enérgicamente, etcétera), los cuales siguen las reglas de acentuación antes descritas a pesar de tener dos sílabas de bulto al final. Pero esa es una lección para otra clase.

Me, too, kind of. About a decade ago when I was 13 I downloaded a lot of episodes of Ranma 1/2 (with English dubbing) and was watching it in Summer for all day long for 10 straight days or so. While the pronunciation of voice actors was quite slow (as usual in kids shows), the experience was enough for my brain to subconciously analyze English. However, I'm not into anime anymore and would like to get some actual book recommendation.

Realmente cualquier versión local del español podría ser llamada "neutra", si se habla sin regionalismos, acentos y tonalidades propias de una zona.
Esto pasa mucho con los doblajes televisivos y de cine, donde hay dobladores de España, México, Argentina o Venezuela, que, debido a su experiencia, despojan su habla de todas o casi todas las características propias de su lugar de origen.

El acento usado en el doblaje tampoco es el usado por los mexicanos, particularmente porque hay un chingo de distintos tipos de acentos usados en México.

When reading spanish books or newspapers I´ll see the past subjunctive used when I think the conditional should be there. Can you use the past subjunctive in that way? I just can find another way to justify the use the subjunctive. I wish I had and example on me.....

Also why the hell is their two past subjuntives can´t the RAE just get rid of one (perferably the -se)?

En cuanto a los errores no te preocupes mucho, seamos sinceros el español se presta mucho a ellos debido a la complejidad que llega a tener.
