I will contend that X-Pac was the best worker of the Attitude Era until the Radicalz jumped and Kurt Angle found himself. In 1998-1999, he was the best. And he was over as FUCK. Second most over babyface depending on what Rock was doing. Even ended house shows and a PPV doing the beer bash with Austin. X-Pac heat wasn't a thing until he turned on Kane and DX reformed as a heel group that kill everyone but HHH's momentum.

All entirely true.

Kid's initial run was also completely fucked by his heel turn. 1-2-3 Kid was maybe the third most over babyface in 1994 and fourth or fifth in 1995 before he goes heel.

And Kyle O'Reilly's limb work is weak as fuck looking after you've seen guys like ZSJ and Aoki. Is that what that guy's supposed to be, some wannabe submission specialist? Because it doesn't come across at ALL.

He seems to me like a dude who was really into GSP and took one BJJ and one mooey tie class and decided he was a bad ass.

Yeah, that's what he's supposed to be, but outside of his work with Adam Cole (and that match with AJ) his singles matches in ROH has been disappointing - bear in mind, he's Davey Richards' top trainee, whereas Zack was trained at Andre Baker's very well regarded Hammerlock UK school (the same that produced Devitt & Becky Lynch) and Aoki was trained by Akiyama.

ACH has got to be the blandest of the bland in the ROH band of midgets.

Shades of Roddy Strong, baby.

Eh, ACH has far more charisma than Roddy at this stage. I've always viewed Strong as a guy with as much personality as an unsalted cracker. I can't buy his promos at all, and I can't get invested in his character, whatever it's supposed to be.

Currently, I dig Dalton Castle, the stuff with Corino's son, and matches involving ACH, Matt Sydal, AJ Styles, Cedric Alexander, and The Addiction. The Bucks always liven things up too.

List of ROH roster members who are better outside of ROH;

. Adam Cole
. ACH
. Bobby Fish
. Cedric Alexander
. Kyle O'Reilly
. Matt Taven
. Matt Sydal
. Michael Bennett
. Raymond Rowe
. Roderick Strong
. Silas Young

At least eight of those guys are wrestlers I'd pay to see, but ROH is doing such a poor job with them I can't muster up the slightest of fucks these days. And now they've lost Ciampa. I'm sure he'll do great for Gabe.

And it isn't even close.

Bobby fish is better anyway

Yeah buddy.

Have you seen his PWG work? He is such a natural d-bag.

ROH also has a bit of an identity crisis where they're not sure if they want to present pro wrestling as a full-on sport or as sports entertainment, and this has led to really mixed tones in many areas of their shows. To be more specific, their dark mood lighting with the blues and oranges clashes with light-hearted comedy stuff.

I'll still support ROH because of the massive VOD library and past glories, but the current state of the product could certainly use some continued fine tuning. They're working on it.

Honestly, WWE should just buy Ring of Honor from Sinclair, give Vince McMahon another victory to toot his horn about, and replace the NXT branding with ROH.

NXT is likely the more popular brand right now.

TNA merging with ROH, that would be the tough one. I'd probably name the company ROH because TNA is an awful name.

Is ROH's "dark mood lighting" on purpose, like on Lucha Underground?

In some venues, yeah. They put up dark blue wall lights like you'd see in a wedding hall, and have also lit the audience in that same dark blue at times. A lot of the time it's just a result of a poor venue and having the wrong equipment, though. They recently invested in a giant wall screen that has improved the visual of the show on television. Feels slightly bigger time.

I can see it now... "IT'S ALL BREAKING DOWN IN THE RING OF IMPACT - ZONE OF HONOR."

Random but I wish Smackdown was live. I haven't watched a Smackdown in months and it's all because it's taped. I just read the spoilers in 2 minutes and then that's it. Smackdown needs to be live. I believe there was a rumor it could be eventually.

Why would you want to watch nothing happen live

I watched a RePro show to see what the fuss was about. I rolled my eyes pretty constantly at the punk rawk wrestling motif that British indies seem to have a hard-on for, the matches were pretty forgettable, I couldn't stand the heel commentators... But this guy.
wpid-fb_img_1422883735446.jpg

This guy is fucking money. This guy is so British. This guy is so classic heel. This guy was born to be a heel manager based entirely off genetics. When WWE signs ZSJ or TMDK(They're Australian, but Vince dgaf), they NEED to bring him in as their manager. I wish I had a photo of his 'ring gear' because it is equally incredible

.

This is a pretty big problem with watching them as it shows week to week. They need to book TV storylines that progress every episode or every other episode. Right now they have episodes where nothing but matches that mean nothing happen and it makes it hard to care. They also need to plan stories out with talent they don't have full control over. I care about guys like AJ and the Bucks but they keep presenting them like special attractions and nothing really happens with them.

The only good thing about ROH right now is being able to buy NJPW stuff at the shows and for some fucking reason, they get NJPW talent.

WWE seems to be doing just fine poaching indie talent and touring them around with NXT. I wouldn't be surprised if they sign guys just to strangle out the local indies, like the carny version of Walmart, with no real intention to bring them on WWE television.

Yeah, I just think of AJ, Joe, El Patron, and the Bucks as special attractions. The only name guys they've brought in and I think of as part of the roster are Kaz and Daniels. Now they're finally getting something to do too, so I'm interested to see where they go with them at least.

Oh, and Matt Sydal also seems to be a full-time ROH guy, but they haven't done much with him.

Gotta applaud them for being ambitious enough to go after that partnership at least.

Give me Kushida vs. Matt Sydal please.

I honestly wonder if WWE would eventually face antitrust/monopoly issues if they started really killing off indies.

Works for the UFC. They basically monopolize any semblance of talent, which stifles competition and keeps them from getting a foothold. The only difference is WWE is smart enough to separate the bums from their actual product.

Grey is a fun throwback.

Don't have Rev Pro pegged as the punk rock school (the hard on comes from being driven underground for so long). They're a squarely family friendly group.

Isn't UFC's next biggest competition still doing well though? (I don't follow MMA so pardon my ignorance)

They're making due with being a spectacle instead of having comparable talent. Any actual talent they have is based on making a longterm bet that they'll develop into a meaningful talent and draw, and locking them into a contract. There's a bit of an arms race for MMA talent in this respect.

There's plenty more intricacies to their competition, but in short what's happening is very similar to when Ted Turner bought WCW. Bellator is now owned by Viacom and in the rare position to poach old fogies from UFC's heyday and make a run at them.

It's honestly the plan they have for any potential hot new talent.

The only problem being that the sport isn't worked...yet.

Yeah, you can selectively book someone to the top. UFC has been pretty adverse to it, but Conor McGregor is a pretty good example right now. He's money and they know it. Chael got in some spots because he was money, too. Elite XC tried with Kimbo Slice, etc.

Hearing ACH dubbed "bland" or whatever just seems actuly ridiculous to me, but I see him in promotions like Inspire Pro and PWG more than ROH, so I guess there's that. It's pretty indescribable to see him in Inspire Pro. You get pulled into the gravitational force of the combination of his talent, charisma and just how completely over and loved he is with that crowd.

The list is spot-on, but as I long-time Roddy hater, I do feel the need to note that while he is certainly better in PWG, Roderick Strong is still terrible. PWG is an outlier for him.

I honestly don't undestand why ROH is so mediocre right now. I just don't get it at all.
