It looks like a catastrophic collision between two cranes on the Olympic site.

But this towering, twisted mass of metal will be Britain's lasting monument to the nation's role in hosting the 2012 games.

Turner Prize-winning artist Anish Kapoor unveiled his design for the £19million sculpture yesterday, a ruby red, helter skelter-style structure that, at 377ft, will stand more than twice as tall as Nelson's column.

It was instantly nicknamed the Eyeful Tower - and likened enthusiastically by London Mayor Boris Johnson to a giant 'hubble-bubble' shisha pipe.

But contributors to Twitter and similar internet sites took only minutes to criticise the work. One described it as 'a rollercoaster that costs £19million a go'. Other early phrases included 'twisted spaghetti', 'horrific squiggles' and 'Meccano on crack'.

Work on the officially-named ArcelorMittal Orbit, which will house a restaurant and viewing platform, has yet to start - and it still needs planning permission.

About 700 visitors an hour will be able to visit the site next to the 193 feet high Olympic stadium. The tower will have a viewing platform and an outdoor walkway.

At its unveiling today, Kapoor, 56, said it was 'thrilling' to be offered the chance to create for the capital something on a par with what Gustave Eiffel made in Paris

Tickets will cost £15 :O

Another thing to be proud of London. Greece may have blown the budget on white elephants for their olympics, but at least they got a good architect to design them.

I quite like it now(hated it at first), makes the Olympic park look more interesting.
What part of the London Olympics shall we bitch about next?

It would be an awesome roller-coaster, but as a monument... is that the best they can do? I imagine it looks more impressive in person, but these pics really do just make it look like a load of junk metal.

"When deep space exploration ramps up, it'll be the corporations that will name everything: The Ibm stellarsphere, The Microsoft galaxie, Planet Starbucks."

Another embarrassing pos to associate ourselves with this olympics

I think they're the firm that designed it no?

I'll admit I like the logo. I still hate the characters, and I'm not certain at all if Ill eventually like this. I just don't understand how this is was the result of the creative process for making a public sculpture for the olympics. Seems totally out of context (victorian rail or something?)

It doesn't need to be banal to add to the architectural fabric of the region. This just seems off. And in ten years it will be a rain/rust stained eye sore on east london.

Because Lakshmi Mittal funded it.

what the hell
who thought this would be a good idea?

19million for an everlasting "advertisement" for your company
what a deal!!!!

londen is run by tards dear lawd
It isn't for the purposes of advertising, Mittal just wanted to fund a structure int he Olympic Park.

I'm the same. It's not the most picturesque....thing, but it wasn't supposed to be (i presume).

Stop the negativity! Enjoy the sport!

At least The Shard looks nice.

Does it? I've only seen images and some construction last year. I think it looks out of place. The picture you posted makes it look ok, but all the other ones makes it look silly, and boring frankly. it's a big pyramid.

eiffel tower wasn't supposed to be permanent
it just happened that way...cliffnote version is over time the french started to like it and it was kept

that POS tower is supposed to be permanent from the get go
which means arcelor mittal for the low sum off 19m gets their company name "advertised" untill the end of time

best deal ever

I don't particularly mind it, It's hardly forced and it looks quite nice. I wouldn't pay to go in though

I doubt when people talk about it they will remember the company name.. Besides, the Olympic park will be a wasteland in around 6 months anyway!

I like it. The finished product has definitely been artistically compromised though. Especially with regards to the staircase, base and canopy.

It looks way better in reality now it's finished than the computer graphics in my opinion. It's weird becuase the bullshots were realistic enough, but it just doesn't quite get the right feel. It looks great in the skyline as you go over the Thames on the train coming into London at least.

Oh and I'm not really sure about the red messy thing, not very understated is it lol.

Everything about the 2012 Olympics is ugly. The blow-job logo, and even the mascots:

One is "angry" or evil, the other is scared. WTF.

And the thing in the OP looks like a big roller-coaster accident.

Looks like terribly designed roller coaster but at the same time if it was a roll coaster it would be awesome.

Yes, and what a great deal it is. Now every Londoner will go out and buy a couple tons of steel.

Anyway, on topic, it's just the latest in a long line of ugly structures Londoners have allowed to be erected that defile a once beautiful city.

Looks like a roller coaster got wrapped around a pole by a tornado. I don't hate it but comparing it to the Eiffel Tower is pretty laughable.

To be fair though, The Shard is alright.
