I think we actually agree on most stuff. What we disagree on is whether something not stylish or elegant should be in public view at that size. Call me crazy but I want the place I live in to be beautiful and I wouldn't give a crap about what the artist is trying to convey if it was in my city ruining my view. And btw something doesn't have to look uninteresting or banal to look nice.

That thing is fucking disgusting and another reason for me to hate the Olympics with a passion. I don't know a single person who is looking forward to the Olympics, and even know a few planning to leave the country on holiday just to escape the incessant bullshit that will arise once the games commence, yet if you listen to the media you'd be under the impression that the whole country's just super-excited and we're all rooting for Team GB! Personally, I'd rather have had the games anywhere else and am not looking forward to the chaos it will cause in London's streets.

Even with all this crazy/shit modern architecture adorning our skyline, the rest of the country's just jealous of how much better London is than any of their cities.

I'm one of them. I'll be out of the country also. No way am I sticking around. My town's hotels will house some of the participating teams and the train station is one of the main stops before London, meaning the town will be heaving with travellers.

The model actually looks good. The actual structure.... not so much. This is why we need to develop anti gravity and get rid of all the shitty engineers out there. Will make my life a lot easier.

Before any government was to found something hideous as that they should fix their social problems first. I don't want to imagine how much of land had to be cleared for this "monument". I bet people aren't allowed to camp or use the perimeters other than for showcasing on the opening "celebration" for this structure.

nah, it's not too bad, just the logo, mascots and this. The stadia look nice, and I'm sure it'll be a pretty good Olympics.

You're right, we shouldn't bother with art, buildings or any sort of decoration. The whole country should be one big campsite.

Define "stylish" or "elegant". If we're using these concepts merely as bywords for "looks good", then, yes, I ultimately agree that something that looks good should be in the public sphere. If we're using these words to represent more specific concepts, then we're into trickier matters. Depending upon your beliefs, for example, the Sydney Opera House isn't particularly "elegant". But it works because it isn't so.

Notice that the word you're using is "nice". I imagine that most designers (and artists) want to produce work that is much more stimulating and interesting than "nice".

The reason why I suggested that work that is more directed towards what "the public" want ends up being uninteresting or banal is because, generally, "the public" encompasses so many different preferences that you end up getting rid of most of the interesting features of your work (and thus most of the features of your work to divide opinion). This is (part of) the problem of designing by committee, and, heck, we even have a word that is often used to describe works that suffer from this: pedestrian. Things that are pedestrian aren't necessarily bad or poorly constructed, they're just... dull. In other words, they're perfectly nice.

Haha, I'm English so I don't care anyway, but the poster was for the cultural festival around the Olympics. Sticking a poster saying "London Festival 2012" and "near you" in Glasgow is a bit silly by any means, so not a team GB issue.

But it seems that someone in the UK wants to do nothing /but/ unconventional architecture. After a certain point, a plain old concrete box is going to stand out.

That said, it's a pretty cool looking structure. I'm expecting someone to roll a giant silver ball through those struts like a Mousetrap game.
