Are Microsoft quitting the console hardware market?

Are Microsoft discontinuing Xbox consoles?

Rn SteamOS has 2 very big obstacles in its way:

- Nvidia driver support is just subpar, and Nvidia is like %90 of the PC market.
- Anticheat is a major issue on Linux. You go and check if EA FC or Madden or COD or Minecraft or Destiny 2 are playable on SteamOS and the answer is no. This is a very bad thing if Valve wants mainstream adoption because normies play these games all the time.

Both of these obstacles presumably won't be in Microsoft's way though. This is probably their last chance to strike back and try to confine Valve to the Windows ecosystem, otherwise they'll lose a huge chunk of their OS users just like they did when Apple became the defacto-choice for the graphic designer segment of the market.
Oh.. I knew about Fortnite, and also Gamepass, but had no idea COD, Minecraft, "FIFA" were unplayable. Then SteamOS is toast as a big gaming OS, can't leave some of the absolute biggest titles behind.

Nvidia is not needed, AMD is fine. Even the consoles are using AMD. I would say the main obstacle is that emulation isnt ideal, native is.

I think the answer is 'sort of'.
There will be new hardware but even if it is a traditional console its not going to be aggressively marketed and discounted. I think MS are done with taking a bath on every unit sold while still ending up a distant last in sales. They will release at cost or a slight profit and let the chips fall where they may, which will probably result in next gen being their last as a real player in the mainstream console space.

Yeah and he helped with that strat putting Xbox games on PC day one
But Phil said it won't happen

"The argument people give me is that 'hey, I'm just going to sell my Xbox One and play all these games on my PC'. I get the emotion around that argument. Frankly, from a financial standpoint, the most cost-effective way to play these games is to own an Xbox One," Spencer said in an interview with IGN. "We're committed to bringing our biggest franchises to both Xbox and Windows, but it doesn't necessarily mean that every game could end up on both platforms. There could be many differences in the play space and how the games play."

I mean ignoring the fact that they have said new consoles are coming (more than once), Gamepass needs hardware, at the moment anyway. And there are literally millions of long time Xbox users with accounts full of bought games, dlc, mtx, etc. And isnt Xbox live like one of their biggest Xbox revenue streams?.

People are thinking with their hearts and not their heads. There will always be Xbox hardware, and they will only stop if they release new console/consoles, and they flop so hard, like half a mil sales in a year or something.
Or when they eventually decide to go streaming only (which they all will do at some point).
Absolutely, some GAFers seem to only think within the boundaries of the traditional console model, for which the absolute numbers of boxes sold relative to the total market is of high importance. However, once you look as Xbox devices more like they're a Microsoft Notebook or an AIO desktop, a tablet or whatever - Microsoft doesn't need to sell 100 million of those. The surface books don't exist to outsell some other company, they're more of a statement and a way to build the brand Microsoft as a whole. Xbox devices are part of that huge ecosystem, they're not literally the only product and it needs to sell gangbusters to not risk the future of the whole company.

I say that Microsoft will stay in the console market but may just stick to American only. It's a huge market and they by far and away sell most of their hardware in the United States. The Uk also buys a decent amount so maybe just stick to region area's. I think they may change directions on how they approach hardware. We shall see.

I may just be out of the loop for the moment so forgive me if this has already been pointed out or I'm wrong and just missed something, but doesn't it seem like Xbox has been overall.... quiet? I mean, I feel like we had a Phil Spencer interview or quote every week. Or someone one else from Xbox had something to say. But lately I just haven't noticed anything of the sort going on. Is this a general trend not exclusive to them? Am I way off?

Someone pointed out that Xbox hardware is scarce at retailers. Jez Corden's "exclusive report" was a controlled leak before the Xbox event, likely to signal to the media that they shouldn't ask about the Xbox handheld/set fan expectations.
So, the next Xbox PR cycle should happen soon.

I wonder what kind of narrative Phil is going to try to establish next week

I have no idea what they are thinking over there. Im not sure if they have a clear plan themselves.

They could be doing what they did with og Xbox where they pull the plug like a year before new hardware and go all in like they did with the 360, or they could be folding hardware after seeing all the money they are making from pc and playstation.

I think they will give one more "generation" a try but the whole situation seems volatile.
This is kind of where I'm at. Modern Xbox is so hard to follow and they seem to go back and forth constantly. They already considered just shutting it all down last gen according to those emails so anything is possible.

I'd like to think they wouldn't give up quite yet but who knows.

This was OBVIOUS to anyone with a double digit iq the first time Xbox changed the meaning of "exclusive" and then even dumber made all their games FREE day 1

When you devalue your product to dog shit why would anyone buy that product

Second thread about this today? Lmao, y'all are wild. Have you looked up on Google yourselves? I did, Walmart, Target, and GameStop all had stock in my area for pickup and for shipping. I'm not sure where this is all coming from, lol.

I'm sure it is, but for me there isn't a single Series X whether digital or physical available near me outside of Limited Stock showing at 1 GameStop location for the regular black Series X.

Best Buy had literally nothing at all, same with target, and just that single GameStop within 50 miles of me. Everybody has Series S but there really isn't a X anywhere near me.

I think they are done. They are doing worse than last gen. SX to PS5 is probably 1;4. Last gen they sold more than 50million according to Vgchartz. This gen they are 33million and SX is probably 16million only and the sales are declining. Moreover now they are releasing their games on all platform so they do not want to or do not think the hardware matters much.

They have an Xbox game showcase scheduled for June 8th, in about a week. So we'll hear more then.

I agree that Phil took a big step back, starting about a year ago. I think that was a combination of Phil's own state of mind (disappointment?) and his distaste for answering the types of questions he knew were coming.

I get that, but stocks do fluctuate. Bigger cities, stores with more traffic, more inventory. I live in a big city, so I'm not surprised that everything is stocked. But that doesn't mean it's the only city stocked, just like ones that are low aren't the only low ones.

If anything it could have something to do with their production. Maybe it's behind? I dunno. But I wouldn't assume they're "no longer doing it" until we know for sure, lol.

I for sure don't understand this way of thinking

Give me more games to play, not less

In fact MS games this gen (for me) have far outclassed Sony games so far in quality
Well, as GAF's preeminent shitposter I'd have hoped that you'd have recognized that in essence it was largely meant as a shitpost.

But dropping the word "console" was intentional. I think the most positive change that could happen on the software side for my gaming life would be for Windows to be replaced as the gaming OS.

But I don't have much use for Microsoft or Sony for games these days either. I mean I'd still be on Microsoft for COD if they hadn't alienated me as a customer. And I guess I'm on Sony for Destiny 2 which much like COD was acquired after the fact. The only recent game from either that I purchased was Helldivers 2 and I still haven't gotten around to giving it some proper playtime.

So, it's not really about the Xbox division's quality of software output but more about Microsoft as a malevolent force as a whole.

They need to deal with the "steam OS problem" before they loose the only competitive edge their OS division has with the private sector.

Also, why would they need to build hardware when every hardware manufacture (currently anyway...see also the looming specter of Steam OS) makes said hardware that runs their operating system. Much like creating or cultivating games internally has little draw for them, they will just outsource the hardware. As long as it "plays their catalogue" and drives ad revenue they don't really care.

Xbox selling out at all retailers in sales blitz confirmed!

Writing the article now!

Xbox has we have know it, as a closed system with its own SO, development environment, digital marketplace, own SKU of games, is probably done for.

A on demand PC with Premium price, Steam, running Windows SKU s, all with a Xbox sticker and a reduced emulated retro with prior generations, that could well be.

By helping them grow on Windows, they keep them on Windows and don't allow them to grow something like Linux at the expense of Windows.

They want the Valve/Windows dependency to be as strong as possible because it's in Microsoft's longer strategic benefit for it to be so, and if the Xbox brand and marketshare evaporates in the process then they broke some eggs to make an omelet.
Doesn't matter what MS wants. They also wanted to own the console gaming market, look how that turned out in the end.

MS has no control over Valve and what they do with Steam OS at this point. Steam is too big. MS' only play left to salvage Windows gaming is the nuclear option: leverage the vast amount of content they now own and delist everything from Steam. Starve Valve/Linux of games.

I mean just because you want something doesn't mean you're guaranteed to get it.

Their efforts will definitely have some sort of impact on PC Gaming though. It's clear that they're taking their eye off Sony and putting it on Valve though.

I predict a long cold war happening in Washington.

All of the "MS" games are from Bethesda and Activision Blizzard, who they acquired

So this is literally that "I made this" meme come to life

Sony didn't have $100 billion laying around to go on an acquisition spree so it's hardly fair to compare them to Bethesda and Activision Blizzard combined, two well known large (previously independent) third party publisher and studio

Disagree here because outside of Starfield I didn't include any games from them and you could have taken Starfield away and I still would have preferred games like Forza and Flight Sim over R&C and Astro

But lets be totally clear Ratchet and Astro are superior games but I have put many many more hours into Forza and Flight Sim and I personally want replay ability over a game I complete in 2 or 3 play sessions no matter how good it was

It's just a shame Little Chicken Little Chicken 's thread didn't stay open a bit longer.

I know you're not supposed to play with your food long after it's dead and cold, but I would have made an exception.

Lol he's been getting rotisserie'd in every thread he's in for a while now.

Mercy ban as far as I'm concerned tbh. If anything I'll be missing his daily crash-outs in every PS thread.

Am I naive in thinking that gaming will be so much more interesting post-console wars?

No.

After Microsoft was defeated in the spinning round disc wars between Blu-ray and HD DVD, the Blu-ray format went on to having a 3D version and a 4K version, both of which would have been technically impossible with the HD DVD specification

After Microsoft was defeated in the mobile phone wars by the combined forces of Apple and Google, the modern capacitive touch screen smartphone pioneered by the original iPhone became the most important technology product in human history and changed everything about society, culture, and economics from how things were before

Every time a market is freed from Microsoft, it becomes more free, more vibrant, more innovative, and more joyful. If Steam OS could free PC gamers from Microsoft, a similar revolution could occur there too

Ah Windows Phone with its interface that looked like it was knocked up in 5 minutes on Windows 95 Paint and an App Store that had a Quran app for each day of the year and not a single fucking useful maps app.

Dogshit phones.

Mibu no ookami Mibu no ookami I was wondering the same thing myself when it comes to the discussions around here. I'm not optimistic that the tribalism won't just change to something else. Or maybe it does die off but then I wonder if overall discussions plummet and we're left with nice talks but lack the entertainment.

I mean I think a lot of people here are going to go the PCMR route and we'll see an uptick of PCMR vs Console warring, but in general, I think discourse over the internet and even here might improve and get more focused on games, but you're right you see some of the threads and the direction and I'm probably being naive.

I don't know, fingers crossed I guess.

Good understanding of how the subsidised console business works there.

Without a user base of 80+ million and the game sales that go with it it's difficult to make the big profits necessary to make the business sustainable.

Sony and Nintendo have regularly had generations where they've sold 100+ million consoles, Microsoft have never come close to this.
