are the steam forums the biggest video game discussion cesspool on the web?

JokerMM

Gay porn is where it's at.
Steam forums are almost invariably the worst forums for any given game, no matter what game it is, you're gonna find people shitting on that said game 24/7 lmao
this is twitch chat/youtube comments tier, no moderation or anything
it's weird because they have arguably the most trust worthy review system out there , but the forums are trash fire

I don't think the Steam forums are particularly bad, tbh. Seen worse here :P

Eh, wouldn't that apply to most discussion boards nowadays? Check a sub reddit for a certain game and it's shitty memes, sharing gameplay videos that no gives a fuck, dumb question and so on.

Also, obligatory "Reeeeeeeesetera worse than anything that will be listed here."

Yes its shit however that shit is a lot of times covered in incredible amounts of layered gold as you'll almost 95% of the time find a solution to tech issues that the devs could've never thought or imagined or detected. Plus it's a good place when devs and publishers do dumb shit. Gaf is tame but at least steam forums and reviews can impact and force corporations to fix their shit or else. Too bad we no longer have that power.

No. ResetEra still exists.

It's a nice place where I can find the fastest and most useful answers for a particular game. I'm using it mostly for technical problems though.

I think they are the the best forums for information on a specific game, particularly PC games. It's my first stop when a PC game is giving me grief in regards to running.

There is a lot of negativity there but generally when somebody craps on a game they are taken to task by it's supporters.

Neogaf is a far better forum for general discussions about new releases, consoles and industry news and GAF has a far less negative attitude in general.

This one for sure. I don't think any kids go to that website, but the mental age of the discussions there would lead you to believe otherwise.

Steam forums has useful info about mods/fixes/bugs and the devs use it to address the community on related stuff like that. It's your fault if you enter the other threads. It's pretty easy to tell by the thread title alone what you're in for.

No, they seem fine for the games I play (mainly recent indie titles). Pretty helpful community for the most part with the occasional comment from a dev.

If I run into issues running an old game or I'm playing a newer unfinished-but-still-released game, often Steam forums are where I end my search for an answer on what I need to do to fix it. I do not use Steam forums for gameplay advice if I'm stuck in a game.

Gamefaqs is where I go if I want to find a pile of people asking about actual gameplay things but not getting answers, eventually posting that they figured it out but not explaining how they did.

Your milage may wary, I mostly play indies so I never see anything weird.
Just the other day I posted a thread on a recently purchased game and I saw a flicker of "only members can post". Maybe it's an upcoming feature in the Steam beta build?

I've found that it depends on the game, and to a lesser extent the genre. Overall it's usually the best place for quick tech support since the devs tend to post there for all but the largest and most commercial of titles.

Aside from that it's a double edged sword - Steam has a ton of users, a huge chunk seemingly very casual, and if a casual player is going to bother finding out that the Steam forums even exist in the first place, it's usually for one of two reasons: they are very enthusiastic about the game and want to discuss it (I.E. cheerful), or they have some kind of serious problem with it (and want to bitch and will despise anyone who are enjoying themselves).

No. Pretty useful sometimes. Good to pop in the steam forums and pcgamingwiki to check on a game technical issues before buying

Not really, like reddit or even this place, you have positive topics and negative topics.

Also devs sometimes directly respond to question from users so that's nice (mostly indie devs but still)

I like those forums.
I can see what problems a game has, sometimes some people also tell you the good stuff, or maybe in detail what sound in the game is like just for instance.

I don't know, just ignore or report the shitposts or don't go there at all. I think you can see pretty quickly if someone is serious or not and just skip ahead...

Normally if a game has a forum full of people shitting on it, its not because Steam forums is full of shitters its because the game is shit, or alternatively has done something extremely anti consumer.

If however all you see it in every forum you visit is people shitting on it, my solution would be to pick good games, that work and don't get flooded with shitty lootboxes. I'm suspecting visiting nothing but AAA of the month shooters would result in the OP's opinion.

No, it's not.
As with every forum, there are always dissenting people. It's just part of living in a free society.

Regardless, the Steam forums are essential to PC gaming. Both for sharing experiences, trouble shooting problems, helping finishing games, etc.
So many times did I found people who own a game on the Epic Store or on the MS Store, posting on the Steam forums asking for help. And the reason is simple, other stores either don't have forums, or those who have, are insignificant.
Because of that, gamers have to rely on the Steam forums for assistance.

Recently, a game called Suplarand Six Feet Under, was released on Steam. It's a puzzle game, with exploration and a bit of combat.
So it's frequent for people to get stuck in a part of the game. And people ask for help to solve some puzzles. So the devs asked the community not to give out the solution out right, but rather to give hints.
And the community did so. It's really cool to see a community of gamers helping each other, by just giving some hints and not ruining the whole solution, allowing for every gamer to still enjoy the game.

Personally I find the steam forums hilarious. All sort of crazy takes there and most of the time in broken English. However, if I got a quick question about a game it's the fastest way to get an answer.

Sad because alot of news is actually there and you can talk directly to people in the industry......then humans join the conversation and its all derailed.

Im pretty sure everyone perma banned from NeoGAF goes straight to Twitter.

4chan is great because they don't give a shit. Any time I need a good laugh I visit it, and probably partake in the shitposting there. At least it's better than the radical left-wing larping on resetera.
Hell, /v/ is most likely the most diverse of all forums. People of all races, nationalities and political backgrounds post there. Which is kinda hilarious in itself.

TIL that Steam has forums and I'm using that platform since HL2 launch
Not really using 'that platform' as much as just launching games then.

Crazy really as personally I play a ton of games on Steam that always seem to require some tweaking and what not so the dedicated discussion forums and guides have become an essential part of my Steam usage over the years.

They have their use, and they can OCCASIONALLY host some semi-interesting thread, but admittedly it seems like you can't go ten replies about ANYTHING without crossing a super-angry fifteen years old who wants the world know he's livid about something. Regardless of its pertinence with the ongoing discussion.

Better than gaming subreddits where any criticism get censored by moderators with ties to the publishers.

Technically Steam forums ARE meant to be moderated by the publishers.

But after a few months they get abandoned by by them. SquareEnix doesn't give a shit about what happens on the Last Remnant Steam community.
