Are Transitions Lenses still a fashion faux pas?

I remember there was a stigma around them that labeled them either super nerdy, or super perverted.

My (super rad) prescription sunglasses were stolen, and I need new regular lenses, so I was thinking about going with the transitions.

I don't want to feel self conscious all the time wearing them!

what? Thats stupid. I had transistions from 8-22 and never heard that.

There is still a stigma, definitely.

I hate transition lenses as that middle range is just awful, but I do not wear glasses so what do I know?

I don't know if it's the lenses themselves that suck, or if it's always just dorky guys who get dorky, ugly glasses in general, but I've never seen any that looked good.

I would advise against them, personally. That said, people fall on different sides of the form vs function debate so if the dull utilitarian aesthetic doesn't bother you then go for it.

I prefer contacts + sunglasses. I'll wear my regular glasses outside the house if it's a particularly dark day or I can't be bothered to put them in. I've never liked transition lenses, have always looked stupid.

I didn't know there was a stigma. I've never owned a pair of transitions lenses, though, even with some cheap variants of them online. My wife has had them before and I wasn't keen on how long they take to change, especially when it's cold out (and it's cold as hell here in the winter).

Do you live in a sunny climate and are going inside and outside regularly?

I had transition lenses when I lived in Australia and was working in and out of a warehouse. Having the glasses transition in seconds when I stepped outside was much better than carrying a second pair of prescription sunglasses with me and they transitioned back almost instantly when I went inside.

However, when I returned to Scotland with the same glasses, they would turn into sunglasses on days where it was just cloudy - so I looked like a complete tool wearing sunglasses when the weather was miserable.

What I'm saying is "it depends".

I don't get Transition lenses for fashion, I get them so I don't have to worry about getting fucking prescription sunglasses.

Holy jesus this thread is so back and forth!

Just a matter of how fashion conscious you are I imagine. Personally, while style wise I can see them not being as good as having dedicated sunglass frames/lenses, I don't see it as justification enough for carrying around multiple sets of glasses with me all the time. Practicality beats minor vanity.

Also worthy of note is that they're not as thin as other newer lenses.

I like my transitions. They're good for your eyes when you're outside. I didn't realize there was a stigma, but I really don't care, either.

It actually works? I got a pair for driving but then learned they didnt transition in the car so I went and got the coating removed :/

If your car windows have a UV coating the transitions will not darken. It amused me and annoyed my wife.

they work great for me and I don't care what other people think of them

no way in hell would I carry two pairs of glasses

They're terrible. I had a pair and ended up returning them within a month. The sunglasses don't even work that well and they don't transition enough when you go inside a building.

Just get contacts and buy normal sunglasses

Yup. I have a pretty heavy prescription (which requires the priciest lens-thinning), so I'm not going to get a 2nd pair just for the heck of it. And I bloody hate contacts.

"Fashion" says it's OK to wear frames with no lenses, of course "fashion" is going to hate on something as utilitarian as transition lenses.

Well, they're not going to make the panties drop but I doubt anyone's going to judge you hard for wearing them.

But I'm part of the 75% that don't wear glasses, so I'm the type that would never even notice this sort of thing.
