Are you satisfied with the graphics NIntendo has been able to produce on Wii U?

I've always preferred a good art style over sheer graphical quality. Yeah I know you can have both and PS4 and XB1 will be in a better position to provide that. But the only games that seems to deliver on that so far is Rime and maybe FFXV. Visually X looks better to me than most games on the two stronger platforms.

As a PC/Nintendo gamer who usually plays with AA off (don't ask, I like pixels tbh), I'll just say that outside of flagship titles like BF3/4, and Crysis, Nintendo honestly wows me more. Part of it is that tech wise they pull off amazing shit with their hardware, and the other part is that artstyle.

The new Mario game looks stunning. Best next-gen game and probably going to sell some WiiUs this holiday season. Reminds me of Mario64 when Nintendo just went with great art + phong (or gouraud) shading while everything else was using low-res textures.

Just shows that it isn't always the amount of tflops you have, but how smartly you use them (+ 1 year head start in optimisation helps too).

Nope.

- Too much colors which should probably make us overlook the easy geometry of most Nintendo games
- Their bloom shading engine is terrible (ex.1: Wind Waker)
- Most areas in Nintendo games are empty, no level geometry and probably the main reason why we won't see any third-person shooter with cover mechanics based on chest-high walls so soon
- Textures are borderline last-gen; it's like they use YouTube compression-filter on everything
- Their lighting engine is of poor quality; they didn't make any big steps since Mario Sunshine
- Lack of post-processing effects is annoying. If I turn, the world needs to blur into a unrecognizable mess to give attributes such as precision less meaning => more emphasis on action
- Ignoring industry standards such as using a more unsaturated color palette (brown, grey, the good colors in general) or lens flares for light bulbs is almost insulting and pretentious

Those clowns will never reach the ceiling of perfect visual expression since they are so busy with having a appealing art style that they ignore the technical necessities of games today. Sorry, I don't need your 1080p or 60 FPS bullshit when I can have 30 fps and basically a painting to look at, thanks Nintendo
In your attempt to be snarky, you actually made a few good points. The worlds we've seen so far of the exclusives are mostly barren, there's not much going on. Huge lack of geometry. They also overdo the bloom. Look at that Mario World gif where he's standing in front of those light that's posted often...way overdone bloom. Aliasing is just terrible. The best looking aspects of these games are the shaders, especially in Mario World. They couldn't be done on 360 or PS3 and they really make the game pop, looks great.

I don't have a WiiU yet. But from what I've seen (Pikman 3, W101, Bayonetta 2) it seems to be just fine. And what's the point of breath taking graphics if the gameplay is subpar?

Sure. These aren't games that require a lot of horsepower. I don't play 3DW and think the textures are low-res or the models are poly-starved, it just works. The console is woefully underpowered in many ways, especially for its price, but for my purposes as my dedicated Nintendo machine, I'm satisfied.

I just want to see what Retro Studios can do with a new Metroid Prime game and then I can (potentially) be satisfied. The Prime games are just visually stunning.

But yeah 3D World, Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8 and X all look great.

Nintendo hardware always seems to be designed specifically for their first party games. The first party games always look like they aren't even on the same system as third party offerings. What it does it does very well but it's not very versatile and 90% of third party games end up looking very average.

Hell yeah! In fact, I quit worrying about Wii U's capabilities since this year's E3. I've played and seen quite a few PS360, and it's clear that the lighting and texturing capabilities of the Wii U are in a totally different league. Even if everything else was the same, those two areas make a huge visual difference.

GPU feature wise, the Wii U isn't any less 'next-gen' than the competition, but it lacks the brute force. That may compromise some potential ports, but it won't prevent the console from producing gorgeous visuals.

Wii U seems to be a similar jump from PS3/360 that the Cube was from PS2/Dreamcast, suffice to say that it's surprising me at a point where the last gen console kind of hit a ceiling (despite still looking amazing).

It should continue to surprise, too, at least until my graphic whore sensibilities are spoiled by something fucking amazing on PS4/Bone.

And that hasn't happened yet.

Graphics themselves, absolutely. But to be fully satisfied, I need them to make their games run at 1080p. If it can do it, it should do it. It should be an industry-wide standard from now on.
Luckily, from what I've heard, many of the biggest games next year are 1080p. That's all I need.

Very satisfied indeed. The Wii U screenshots of Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D World and Assassin's Creed IV don't look out of place in the next gen screenshot thread.

Can't wait to see how Donkey Kong, Mario Kart 8, X, Bayonetta 2, Yarn Yoshi, SSBU, Zelda U and Metroid U are going to look.

I'm also hoping that we're going to see something come from the Japanese Garden tech demo because it looked fucking gorgeous!!!

I'm satisfied with the graphics, because they are PS3/X360 level and that is an acceptable level of performance in this day and age. A lot of Nintendo fans seem to think the graphics are amazing, but I wonder if they just came straight from the Wii and the Wii U was their first taste of HD graphics? After all, if you played something like Blue Dragon (X360) from 2006, I don't think you'd think that, because BD looks as good or better than most Wii U games, and it has a Nintendo sort of art style (excellent game, too). Case in point:

Ni no Kuni (PS3) is another good one for them to try, to put things in perspective.

Hmm I'm pretty happy with Nintendo's first party titles graphically, though 1080p would help immensely. I'm not happy with third parties on the system though. They often fare even a little worse than PS3 and 360, and I am NOT happy about that.

Art will always trump technical prowess, although it's nice to have both ofcourse. A perfect case for this is Tearaway which I think is one of the best looking games I've seen on any system (perfect IQ + great artstyle), whereas I feel like all of Crytek's games whilst technically great are shit to look at. Mario 3D World looks great from the streams I've seen.

Graphics are fine for Nintendo games because they are built for that hardware in mind. However multi platforms are not going to cut it. So yes for Nintendo games No for third parties.

I think the artstyle more than anything has impressed me so far. The pixar quality crisp in all nintendo games looks amazing.

There's the possibility that 3rd-parties can't even get it right on the "proper" consoles. For example, what's the point of next-gen Dead Rising if it still has performance issues?

I'm loving what they are doing with their little box. Some of their games look absolutely gorgeous when you sit back and actually look at it.
Even AC: IV looks pretty great on the WiiU.

I hardly ever notice graphics while playing, but it doesn't hurt to have them look as good as they do.

It is fine for me. I think "teh graphix" has reached a point of diminishing returns. Until 4k becomes standard, I think it is much ado about nothing. Physics/animations is where there needs to be more emphasis.

If this doesn't satisfy you then...

Honestly, that's about the worst example you could have given from that game. The simple yellow tiles don't match the poorly-executed attempt at realistic water.

Observed without comparison to where the rest of the industry is right now, the Wii U's graphics are fine. It's just that the bar has been raised a bit...

Resolution is a whole fuckton of a lot closer to diminishing returns than actual graphics technology is.

Yep I'm impressed. At this moment I like the stuff on Wii U better than anything I have seen on Xbox one which frankly is very disapointing.

All the Xbone launch titles are clearly half baked. The Wii U has been out for a year so it's not that surprising. PS4 definitely beats the Wii U quite easily in terms of visuals.

Yeah, it's been good. A talented team of artists can do wonders. A shame they couldn't get the same graphics in 1080p though, what with most TV's being that resolution nowadays.

I come from 1080p games on the PC and Nintendo's games look breathtakingly good. No PC game in the past few years wowed me like this (Crysis was the last one).

Games designed for Wii U in mind look fantastic: 3D World, Pikmin 3, Nintendo Land, and Wind Waker if that counts. I expect the gap will grow as this gen plays out though, and we'll still be saying "that looks great for Wii" in competition with XBox1 and PS4. But it shouldn't be as bad this time around since HD was a major stepping stone for video games.

That doesn't mean I didn't wish there was just a bit more power under the hood though. Enough to ensure that 3rd party games didn't have weird issues.
