Performance is pretty damn weird on my PC. I understand this game basically isn't touching the GPU right now, but are there any tips for getting better performance? I've added all those recommended startup options.

I have a 3770k and 690gtx.

If you're having bad performance on a 3770k and GTX690 I don't know what to tell you beyond wait for the game to be optimized.

I nearly have it maxed out at 1080p with a GTX 560ti and a Core 2 Duo 3.6 Ghz.

I have it maxed at 1080p with x4 AA and it runs ok in some of the scenarios. 40~60 in the infantry one for example. Some like the helicopter training just chug at 20 fps though

This is what you guys were talking about? Hilarious. Still have yet to see it in person. Music was perfect for tis.

I think I'm gonna order a TrackIR 5. Can some of you give me thoughts on it? I'd also like to know if anyone has an Idea as to the cheapest place I can get it?

I wouldn't waste the money at this point, we're close enough to the Rift becoming a thing that it'd be a waste.

Consider this instead: http://youtu.be/R60LoGA-sKI

It's a given.

I dunno. I think eventually it's a given. But being that BiS have 2 games in Development and have this alpha to consider, i'd say it's low on the priority of things to do considering its a niche device(though, the same could be said for Trackir 5)I also was thinking I'd wait for a revision 2 of the Rift.

Yeah I'd say skip it for now and wait for the Rift, although I've been wanting to try it as well.

I dunno, it's already supported and I've heard/read that it worls extremely well.

Edit: Also, it seems that it would be a annoying to have to take it off to look at the kb if say I wanted to use any of the keys on the right side of the kb.

Edit: i also run three monitors, usually with mumble open on one and a map of the island on the other or any other combination of things i feel are pertinent to what i'm doing.

Use FaceTrackNOIR which gives you head-tracking by using just a regular webcam and emulating it. It works really well and feels very fluid and gives you and idea if TrackIR is worth it or not. If you really like it, then you can decide if you want TrackIR and if you don't, then there's no money wasted and you could back to playing normally.

Did you use any startup options in arma2? If yes those still work in arma3. If no then check this link

So as this game progresses from Alpha to Beta and eventually release, the GPU will be used more heavily, right?

This has nothing to do with squeezing another percentage. FRAPS is shit for recording, a lot of people who has been using it for a long will agree with that notion. Fine you like it, however that doesn't change my point. The fact that the recording FPS dictates your FPS in many circumstances makes it bad, very bad.

Listen, I'm just a simple guy. So if I'm able to record a relatively demanding game at 30 fps in 1080p.., well, honestly I don't get what the problem is. I guess you're a professional and have higher standards that lesser beings like me cannot possibly comprehend, so I'll just yield and say I'm sorry that I offended your Titans :)

Anyway, having a lot of fun with the alpha, can't wait for the final, especially the new flight model.

Why did you even bother quoting me in the first place when you have nothing of value to add to the post I made only to wrap it all up here with some snide, slightly girlhurt comment?

I can't wait for them to fix MP performance even if it's just by a little. The simplest of missions still results in the same performance no matter what the setting is and how small the game is. I've heard a lot of the servers aren't up to par yet, but it's definitely annoying since I want to play MP so badly.

Scenarios will have to do for now. At least this game is playable at low framerates unlike other games, but it doesn't mix well with the shitload of medications I'm on.

Yeah the MP performance is really in the toilet, this game doesn't really shine without MP. Even when I'm hosting a smaller scenario for me and and a friend, my FPS is cut down by 50-60% which is quite a lot. Although I'm fairly certain it's a priority.

Gives me time to work on my missions.

Caved in and got it. I haven't played too much of it yet but I can tell the controls are a huge improvement already.

The only thing I don't get in the Arma 3 alpha, how does spotting an enemy works? How do you get to target vehicles, infantry, etc? There's a swap targets option but that's only for existing targets I guess.

Wow. So I've played it for a little while - the solo missions and damn, I really must visit the field manual often!
So much stuff you must remember to be battle efficient aka controlls!

This is wanting me build a new desktop pc!
Also update - i5 duo 2.53 and mobility 5650 isn't good when you try multiplayer. No go. Uh-nuh.

Desktop...

Radio spotting is automatical IIRC. If you're talkin about red circle around enemies that appears on your screen during some missions they're targets called by a squad leader. You can call them to your squad mates by pressing F keys and pointing at the enemy you wan't to be killed.

Just to expand on those point, everything is dictated in the difficulty menu. A lot of this can be customized or gets cut when you move up, as the default is the lowest difficulty level.

Oh and two GAFTac divisions for EU and US would be cool

I'd say go for it. Especially if you're into flight sims. In arma 3 it also works really well. I think you can order it straight from the developer site, no?

Thanks for the info. I'll have a look into adjusting some of my controls tonight (think I've already used f for something else).

Sounds like a great idea. I wouldn't mind starting a steam group tonight (as a first step).
Although I would think most of you arma 2 vets have a better understanding of what would be needed to make this work out.

Yup. Just ordered a Trackir 5, ProClip, and a G9X mouse, as i need more buttons and this Razer Deathadder wasn't cutting it.

A bit of planning. ShackTac seem to have good, fun, "rules" that seem to make it a good experience for all. I just read a manual form the sit that was 100,000+ words. I guess when you've been playing together as long as them you kind of know what works to keep the game fun and what doesnt.

How does this compare to Battlefield 3?

Battlefield is an arcade shooter, Arma is more of a simulation to a degree.

I have a question regarding the buying options. Does it make a difference in terms of how much money goes to the devs when i buy the game directly via steam? Or do they get more when i buy it in their store? :)

What does that mean? Is it harder to shoot?

The map in arma 3 is 10.000 km2... which is "quite" large.

Yes, fireing is harder since it simulates real combat (I belive real world goverment use the game for simulation for their army).

What's the setting to increase the LOD on foliage? I'm talking specifically about leaves in trees which kind of look like jelly even if you're only 30 feet away.

I would be interested in joining and helping out with GAFTac EU if you decide to move forward with it. I have been playing these games since Operation Flashpoint but never been part of a bigger community. It has mostly been in a smaller group of silly Swedes with each new release.

In Arma it isn't about being quicker than your opponent at moving your mouse or sprinting at 50 km/h around a map while strafing and jumping to avoid shots. It's about knowing your surroundings and tactically working together to neutralise the opponent without suffering casualties. The main difference is it's a much slower paced game and in my opinion much more rewarding.

If you wait until next week I'm sure someone here would offer you an Alpha Lite key giving you a chance to check it out on your own.

You can do that in Battlefield 3 too.

People can go Rambo in BF3 just fine.

Isn't that the only way to go if you want to successful in that game? ...I find the prone dive to shock revive to be an invaluable tactic. I demand everyone in my 4 man squad (including me) to know this tactical move or get booted or just carry a grenade launcher. Anywho, really enjoying the experience so far. Especially in contrast to the majority of Military based shooters I've played in the past few years. Was worried it'd be too "sim" for my taste.
