Arma 3 Alpha - March 5th - 25 Euros

Anyone have any experience running ARMA servers or with ARMA missions?

Our Wasteland server (BSC) will crash anytime 5ish people connect at the same time or in rapid succession.

Hilariously it's never a problem during the day (the server has hours of uptime) but at night when our group all try to hop on we always end up crashing our own server.

I'm beginning to think its a Wasteland issue because we've hosted some of the Blitzkreig missions without these sort of issues.

Yeah I'm spending so much time in the Arma 3 alpha as well.
Might have something to do with what a mess SimCity currently is. Pretty funny how Bohemia released a more functional alpha of a game than EA Maxis did with final SimCity.

But it's mainly how of a massive improvement the avatar movement is over previous games. It feels so good now. The game is a joy to play.

GafTac? I will be playing this game for the next forseeable 3 years. I know that there is a group of us that play a ton of Arma. We could work on tactics and maneuvering. I have a Gaf mumble that I created a year or so ago for Arma too.

I would be really into joining a GAF team

FRAPS is fine as long as you aren't recording, the second you hit that record button it becomes one of the worst pieces of recording software out there.

Just have it record to a seperate drive. You lose like, maybe 1-2 frames while recording.

Please do, we have a lot of fun.

There are guys from all over, too. You can probably find someone to play anytime off-peak hours.

I will say that we're still mostly kind of Arma noobs. We mainly played DayZ together, but we're learning more and more every time we play.

Is there a thread for the group or a steam group?

Helps with a fast computer :)

Yes, my 3930k, 2 x Titans, 16GB Ram og an 512GB Samsung SSD surely isn't fast enough.

FRAPS is just worst recording software out there, nobody says it can't record something ever but it has a lot of recording problems, it tanks and caps your FPS, it takes too much processing power, makes the game skip at times which ends up in the recording and it muxes multiple audio streams into the file - Which is annoying. Once every blue moon it actually manages not to be a pain in the ass.

There's far too many alternatives to ever suggest FRAPS for recording.

You sound like a good friend of mine. He has 25000 dollars of hifi and mounts egg cartons and echo dampers all over his home because he can't enjoy music on it unless he squeezes out the last single % - While the rest of the rest of us rolls our eyes a bit.. I think FRAPS works pretty fucking fine - for the most part.

2 Titans huh.. *rolls eyes* ;)

This has nothing to do with squeezing another percentage. FRAPS is shit for recording, a lot of people who has been using it for a long will agree with that notion. Fine you like it, however that doesn't change my point. The fact that the recording FPS dictates your FPS in many circumstances makes it bad, very bad.

Anyway, if anyone in Northern Europe wants to get together at some point we should definitely figure something out.

I have a 10 slot TS3 ( For ACRE use, when that's released ). Personally I prefer slower based scenarios, co-op etc. not all that online deathmatch pew-pew.

I'm up for that. Especially when I can get playable frame rates in multiplayer.

I spent all last night tweaking settings, but I'm still getting FPS in the 20's on every server I try. (i5 3570K & 670).

Dxtory. I don't see a single digit FPS hit and it records independent of the game's FPS, so you can easily record at 30FPS for YT while running a smooth 60. It also allows for multiple audio streams in the file, so you could load up a recording in, say, Sony Vegas and the game sound, Teamspeak etc. would all be independent of each other so you can turn them down individually if you'd like. I can set a specific resolution, I can crop on the fly from 16:10, I can set my own Codec ( Default codec isn't that good ).

Personally my favourite recording app, although some of the translations are iffy.

... Jesus that sounded like a sales pitch.

So uh

Really want this game (always been tempted by Arma II but held off)

but

Intel Core 2 Duo 3Ghz and an ati HD4850 (512vram)

That's barely above the minimum. I can run the Arma II demo fairly well, but this seems a whole other ballpark. I'm not an "every setting must be set to very high!" gamer, so should I still have an enjoyable experience with this?

This is really the only thing holding me back from a purchase right now.

FWIW, the Arma 2 demo is notorious for having utterly horrible optimization. Literally, between the Arma 2 demo and Arma 2 retail, the same levels probably have 15-20+ more FPS.

Dxtory with Lagarith Lossless Codec is leagues ahead of Fraps in pretty much every single way. It might be a little hard to understand everything at first if you are coming from Fraps (since you have like 2 settings to mess with in that..), but it's so worth it.

Just wondering if anyone here with a 680 SLI setup has tried running ArmA 3 yet, or whether SLI is supported at all?

I'm a little worried about not being able to handle it.

Without wishing to take the thread further off-topic (EDIT: I'd love if someone knowledgeable enough made an OT for PC game-capture know-how), at this point I'd argue MSI Afterburner's video capture (and screen capture for that matter) is better than what FRAPs offers. Lots of supported codecs, no frame rate issues, no splitting of files, dual audio sources mixed or unmixed, optional separate PTT for the second audio source, etc. And it's free!

I don't believe the profile is truly working at this point, it's a bit spotty and PiP has a tendency to flash.

Yep, another excellent choice. FRAPS is just outclassed by everything basically.

Sethos if you're looking for EU group I know TAW is really big and I have a few friends in there. They seem to enjoy it.

Also GAFTac would be cool.

I've tried to use it before, but yeah, it's pretty confusing with the translations.

Just bought Arma 3 Alpha and its almost downloaded ......... hype!

Would also be up for joining a GAF group / clan ...... based in Ireland so I am ready to rock with the most of you (seems to be most popular in Europe).

Enjoy coop tactical scenarios and enjoy Wasteland quite a lot as well.

Steam username is Jburton (already a member of the NeoGAF steam group )

It's annoying Play WithSIX has the most shitty and obtuse interface that makes no sense, would be nice to use with all these new addons coming out. Guess it's back to manual mode.

I was hoping they'd improved that--I tried SIX when it first came out and just couldn't figure that shit out.

Took me some time but I figured out the original interface after a few days. Their new "improved" Web 2.0 interface is so catastrophically bad you won't even believe it. The guy behind the app should ask someone for help.

Does anyone know of a server that runs good in terms of fps? I get 20 fps in every server when I should be getting ~40 fps.

I'll see about setting some up for the guys in Europe, preferably up north / England by tomorrow or sometimes this weekend. I'm just not sure about the server hosting.

I can host but the current bug where the host gets slapped in the face with 15fps would give me a pretty boring night.

I Have your cpu with a 6850 gpu (but I play on minimum)
Hope you enjoy the feel of a powerpoint presentation , but with a remote that has a weak signal

It's PLAYABLE. i guess. Is it a coincidence that I'm now getting a 3570k and will OC it to 4.3ghz a day after this game came out?

yes because I just got my taxes back

Performance is pretty damn weird on my PC. I understand this game basically isn't touching the GPU right now, but are there any tips for getting better performance? I've added all those recommended startup options.

I have a 3770k and 690gtx.
