Arma 3 Alpha - March 5th - 25 Euros

Does anyone know what maps are currently compatible to port over to the alpha? I know the two maps from ArmA 2 can be brought over and the new lighting engine makes them look better than ever.

You can do that in Battlefield 3 too.

I love BF3 but if you want some arcadey experience with decent sized maps then that's the game for you. This is a man's game compared to BF3 which is childs play in comparison.

I already mentioned in chat yesterday that I like BF3 a little more right now but ArmA scratches that itch that no other shooter even comes close to satisfying and it just got better (in terms of control/gunplay) in the Alpha.

This is what you guys were talking about? Hilarious. Still have yet to see it in person. Music was perfect for tis.

I think I'm gonna order a TrackIR 5. Can some of you give me thoughts on it? I'd also like to know if anyone has an Idea as to the cheapest place I can get it?

I don't have a trackir, but it seems to be around $150

I know this is not the answer you're looking for, but depending on what you want out of it, i'd say wait till we see where oculus rift goes. Because for $300 having the immersion of "no windows" + maybe some sort of head tracking down the road for freelooking would probably be a much better purchase.

I'd say you should get trackir if you're really into simulators, arma aside.

I shall check it out if I get the chance.

How is the sound design?

Sound is pretty basic affair. You'll either like it or want to go for mods. Regarding ArmA II (seeing as a lot of base material can easily be converted between games with the right toolset) I use ACEX_SM (ACE eXtra Sound Mod, if that helps) but a lot of people use JSRS.

EDIT: I answered my own question earlier. You can port all of the ArmA II islands to ArmA III, as long as you delete some files.

EDIT 2: Okay, I was able to port over nearly every island. I have no idea what the issue is, but I can't seem to port the Army of the Czech Republic island.

Tempted to pick this up. Doubt their are many Australian servers though.

I know Wasteland is pretty much just PvP. What other multiplayer modes are there?

Is there any way to tidy up the files and host them or just post how you go about that?

Would like to try some other maps with the new engine.

How do you start the character customization mode? And are you able to load one with custom weapons?

I'll tell you what I did, and hopefully that will give you a basic idea.

Create a modfolder (@whateveryouwanttocallthis, minus the () brackets), create an 'addons' (call it addons) folder inside, and do the following:

If you're wanting to islands from ArmA II, go to the addons folder for that game (NOT Operation Arrowhead if you have that) and copy all of the files to put inside that new addons folder. Delete the following from that folder after you transfer it, but make sure you're deleting it for ArmA III, not II!

editor.pbo
editor.pbo.bi.bisign
editor.pbo.bi2.bisign
ui.pbo
ui.pbo.bi.bisign
ui.pbo.bi2.bisign
UIFonts.pbo

uifonts.pbo.bi2.bisign
modules.pbo
modules.pbo.bi.bisign
modules.pbo.bi2.bisign
anims.pbo
anims.pbo.bi.bisign
anims.pbo.bi2.bisign

Upon boot you will get a few error messages and it will take longer to load the game (you've just added roughly 8 GB to ArmA III), and you may get crashes when trying to load ArmA II models in the editor, but you can easily use the ArmA III assets in these islands. To activate it, you can go to Expansions in the menu and toggle it on, which will require you to restart the game.

For Operation Arrowhead, the principle is similar, except you're going to be a new modfolder to be safe (many of the filenames between the two games are the same, so you risk overlapping data), and you take these files from the Expansion folder for Operation Arrowhead, which gives you the islands that mod offers. Like the ArmA II island transfer, you will get error messages, and you must delete those files I already mentioned if they're there as well (a few aren't). The same method as the ArmA II islands is what you do to activate this as well.

If you have all that ArmA II had to offer, that grants you all of the islands from that title except the ones introduced in Army of the Czech Republic. I believe all of the files for that DLC are actually encrypted, so you'll only get those in ArmA II for the time being. The island is a mishmesh from previous islands, but it does sort of ruin the potential of porting that campaign over.

Hope this helps. The only crash I've gotten after closing an island was Utes I believe, and this is because ArmA has a habit of having a starting screen for the island you last played on if you've just done something, and Utes does not have such an opening.

EDIT: Ohohoho, looks like the maps for the remake of Operation Flashpoint, Cold War Rearmed, also work. So it seems ArmA 0 and ArmA II maps are compatible. Though the character model is all kinds of fucked up. :p

Prepare to be spooked!

Alright, I caved in and bought this. I didn't play ARMA 2 or antything, and I'm wondering if there's any steam groups or servers I can join to find you guys. Need to find me some people to play with.

So after putting 10 hours into it so far.

I have noticed that liek 90% of my crashes have been during Wastelands...

Sometimes I can play it for like an hour and other times like 5 minutes ( like i joined in, got 3 kills within 5 minutes and crashed...)

Annoying.

Even thought it is alpha, it is a massive improvement over 2, so much so that playing arma 2 feels bad.

Also, first person mode is finally smoother and not a pain in the ass like in ARMA 2. A lot more fluid and a better experience.

Any way to increase the FOV?

You can use the + and - numpad keys to adjust FOV. In Arma 2, you had to double-tap the key to "lock" it.

This game really needs a FOV slider.

My performance in MP sessions is horrible. I get constant 50-60 fps in SP, but in MP it drops to 15-20 fps.

What gives?

If anyone is having FPS problems and adjusting the settings doesnt seem to do much, try changing your "visibility" settings. Adjusting this will directly affect performance. I set mine to 1500, 1500 but different rigs and personal taste apply heavily here.

I'm used to performance drops in MP but 45 fps is quite severe. Even in Arma 2 MP I dropped 20 at most, but Alpha is Alpha, so I can't complain too much.

I'm pretty confident that you won't be able to effectively play ARMA on an Oculus due to it's low resolution. ARMA is all about picking out tiny pixels of soldiers hiding in foliage. Imagine trying to play this game effectively at 640x800 resolution.

Speaking of TrackIR, has anyone used FaceTrackNoIR? Been fiddling around with it and it may not have the full sensitivity of TrackIR, but it seems to get the job done with just a webcam.

I dis this, but when i ADS it resets to the small FOV, is there not a way to make the bigger FOV default?

It was fine in arma 2.

Which is the occulus devkit, I am hearing they want to push 1080p per eye for the consumer version. FPS is a bigger problem trough because you want alt east 60 fps V-synced for the head tracking to sync. anything less then that and it will drift. I think you really need a BEAST of a machine to push 2 x 1080P at 60fps vsynced arma 3

Is there like GAF US group or something? I just bought this yesterday and I never played any Arma/DayZ game. I'm completely lost on what to do and how to do it.

This is my worry. I want to check it out and I want to support the devs for creating a true PC game...but in previous ARMA games and even DayZ I boot it up and just go "wtf do I do now?" - so I think I'm just a bro shooter guy...BF3/CoD for me. :(

Using a laptop w/ i7 2670QM, 8GB RAM, GT555M, reinstalled W7 yesterday.

Arma 2 gave me about 25 FPS, reading that Arma 3 runs better than A2, do you think I should jump in the boat?

I was playing coop with one other person and we headed to the airbase on the west side of the island. We decided we would simply swim across the large channel on the south side and about two hundred meters out, AI starts shooting at our asses. And they kept at it the whole way there.

About 5m from the airbase shore, They killed me. When i respawned 2 minutes later, I was stuck with this extremely blurry vision. I dont know if it is a bug or something, but it didnt go away throughout the next 30 minutes of playing (in which I proudly was still able to shoot some baddies).

I'll put the screens up a little later. Or you can look at my screens on steam community. steamname: Orlanis.

Bastard AI has some reeeeally sharp aim with assault rifles, eh? Still really enjoyable.

Same here :( I keep shooting teammates, but I suspect I'll get better the more I play it. Just need more time.

Tried a Blitzkreig map this morning, holds your hand a little more as it gives you respawn spots and lays out your objective nicely on the map.

I also had to install the Shacktac FireteamHUD as I found it annoying to hold K to bring up the compass, but this also helps with the teammates (only squad not everyone on your team)

That Folding Map mod is mine when I get home

Quelle surprise, the game runs like dogshit even on regular settings. I guess that means 25 bucks down the drain.

FYI, you can double-tap K to keep the compass on-screen...but yeah, the Fireteam HUD is great.

Guess you don't need to bother playing the beta or full game that you now own, which will undoubtedly have the exact same performance as the alpha.

How is the flight? Did they implement the take on helicopters model as they said they were. Does it feel nice and realistic?

Also would love some general consensuses about the game overall.

Meh fuck it, bought.

The Take On Helicopters flight model is not in yet. I don't think they have given an ETA.

Thanks for response, that's not a deal breaker for me, couple of quick questions while it's downloading.

Where are the cfg files located, and can you still do application level downscaling by setting the render/display resolutions seperately?

Cheers.

In the documents folder. And yes, there is still a render option.

What's your specs?

I had to bump my resolution down to 1600 x 900 to get it to run properly, so it's all good now.

Totally getting wrecked on the first showcase mission though, my team is getting butchered in the valley no matter what I try.

Animations are amazing though, wow.

Man, one thing I really like about how this game looks from screenshots and gifs is that it seems to be one of the only games with lighting that actually tries to emulate real life, not a movie. Some of the footage I've seen looks like Afghanistan helmet cam YouTube videos.

Too rarely do you see actual simulation lighting instead of just fancy lighting. It's the same reason Gran Turismo replays look so realistic. Heck, even Gran Turismo 2 looks surprisingly realistic for its time in large part due to how realistically the game is lit.

I tried that but I couldn't get the bugger working. It's a real shame because I need the extra freedom trying to land a little bird needs xD

Can you link me to some places so I can get mine set up pleassseee ? :D
