Arma 3 Alpha - March 5th - 25 Euros

My game is crashing literally once per 10 minutes, only thing I've done is set no splash screen parameter and change the fov a tad, wonder what it could be. It was crashing even at the default fovs.

Seems really instable with the steam beta chat windows, plus a verify cache integrity through steam found and redownloaded some corrupt files, so good so far, but haven't had enough time yet.

I take it the grid squares in the editor/map are 100x100m? It's fun creating long range engagements with OPFOR and BLUFOR bases.

Arma physics at its finest.

This is one of the best things about TrackIR, variable lean. So you can ever so slightly peak out from a corner with ease, fantastic in CQB.

Believe I will be able to get stable performance with optimisations, especially those brought out at beta and release.

Get 60 fps @1080p all settings at high except AA, PP which are turned off.

Get drops to 45 fps in certain situations and weird drops right down to 25 fps.

Specs are i5 - 2500k @ 4 ghz, 8gig 1600 ram, GTX 670 2gb and 120gig SSD game drive.

Any tips to help stabilise performance at this early point.

No chances. Not only it's Alpha, even though community one, it's also made by BIS.

is there someway to use a wiibar in windows together with Arma?
Can you elaborate on what kind of use?

The wiimote can be used of course. The bar itself is just a 'passive' set of IR LEDs. The only thing the plug does is power it - there are no communications on that cable. So there is no way (or need) to integrate it with Windows. You can power it from USB with some voltage conversion, but most people just rig up some batteries.

If you're thinking TrackIR, then the wiibar would have to be mounted to your head.

Steam has the complete Arma 2 collection for half off right now. As someone who has never played an Arma game before, should I pick that up or just jump into 3? Is there a single player aspect to it? And what about controller support?

Still hoping to have something running tonight for a handful of EU guys on my TS3, however it's looking a bit shaky right now.

Shit, I totally forgot that I own TrackIR. Time to try it with this game.

Can I join in tonight? I have no idea how to play this game. =\ Are you guys in EU or NA?

Doesn't look like it runs any better or any worse than most higher end computers right now. See a lot of the infamous framedips in his videos.

People would be surprised how poorly the game runs on high-end machines right now.
How is the performance on your machine?

I don't think I'll be able to go back to Arma 2 lol.

All over the place, to be honest. I'm not GPU limited whatsoever, as I can add every single GPU related setting without seeing a drop in FPS - 8xAA, 150% Internal Render Res, all that. However I've had to turn the view distance so far down to maintain a somewhat steady 60 in rural areas and when there's mountains in view it drops down to 50, in the major town it can hit 35-40.

Now that's not including AIs etc. so add some AI action to the big town and I'll be scraping 25FPS at times. I also saw it in dslyecxi's video where it would drop below the 25FPS which is extremely noticeable. The game just isn't utilizing the CPU cores properly.

I'm getting totally random crashing, never get more than 20 minutes play time :p. It's not my hardware, I've been trying different things and testing for 2 days now, tried two of the latest beta drivers from AMD, maybe that's the issue, but I've read that same happens on the whql release.

Event viewer told me that it's not getting access to a file, but I've given it a clear pass through my av. Seems pretty common reading the bi forum.

Yea no matter what specs you have or what settings you choose in game, the only real thing that can increase or decrease FPS is the view distance.

Is it cause the CPU's are not that good, or just the game is not well made ( I know its alpha, but arma 2 had this problem as well)

I also hope they fix/improve the joining of MP games. Things like downloading data should be a lot quicker.

Also, is it normal that when ever I launch the game ( after restarting the PC, so first time loading the game after I have turned on my PC) it crashes with driver issues?

Except from wasteland that crashes all the time and the large lag spikes/ fps drops that randomly happen ( sometimes) it's a pretty good first alpha build.

Cant wait for the updates to roll out!

I can usually get between 1 - 3 hrs playtime without a crash, but sometimes it just hangs after 5 minutes in a server.

I have a GTX 680, so maybe it's an AMD driver problem?

It may be, judging from their forums it's more likely than nvidia, but people were posting with your hardware as well.

Possibly trying to call on something that only Nvidia cards can do, maybe some ppaa or physx setting in the cfg.

So yeah, official word came down from the developers, they are taking the fan interest in up porting all the Arma 2 content to heart and have decided to do an official patch that will merge all the arma 2/OA content you own into 3.

This is handled by releasing new add-ons that merge the content people already own via configuration files. We are working on an officially supported approach for later (similar to TKOH's Rearmed).

I haven't actually played this game myself but the lighting looks AMAZING in the videos that I've seen. I'd say that is most impressive to me so far.

I heard some people say that if you can run Arma II/OA that you can run Arma III. Is that true? I can run Arma II well enough but I'm hesitant to purchase this since I see so many people with high-end PCs having issues. Should I wait to see if I can get a pass to the Alpha lite to try it out first?

Considering the game is in its cheapest state ( will get more expensive once it goes beta and full price when fully released) might as well buy it now if you are planning on buying it someday.

It is still worth it and while I do crash and the FPS is not that great, it is still playable ( wasteland is what mainly crashes most of the time, the rest are fine for the most part)

Just to post a final feedback, here seems to be the stable mixture of things to do, most recent I did at the top:

-remove any launch parameters you might have added
-put an ignore rule in any program that might block it from the internet
-set GPU_DetectedFramesAhead=1; to 1 from 0, increases the frame buffer by 1 frame
-set both your cfgs to read only

-disable steam community and friends list
-just leave the process priority on normal

Just played without crashing for an hour, feelsgooodman.

I'm pretty confident that you won't be able to effectively play ARMA on an Oculus due to it's low resolution. ARMA is all about picking out tiny pixels of soldiers hiding in foliage. Imagine trying to play this game effectively at 640x800 resolution.

Wouldn't it be possible to play it on 2D on the oculus?

Plus the fact that one could try to downsample to keep as much fidelity as they can.

O man, once you get comfortable with the helicopter controls using just the keyboard and mouse for weapons. Feels sooooooooooooooooo good.

No Gafplay tonight? :( was pretty keen.

I spend a little time with 3 for a while trying config tweaks and checking to see if there are any dev build updates.

I then spend a couple of hours playing Arma 2.

That percentage will shift as Arma 3 progresses.

Is there a timetable for when they're going to add new features and missions and such? Going to hop into multiplayer soon but I always enjoy doing the solo missions and watching the ai break horribly :D

I'm not aware of any timetable, but with the amount of mod activity already you don't really have to wait for BI to roll out content.

I'm running these three UI mods. Highly recommended:

Might give zombie sandbox a run today too.

Still hate how Profiles are still handled like this. Can't rename the default profile and if you create a new one, have to redo all the controls again ...

EDIT: Oh, found a workaround.
