Been having fun working through the Grand Prix with everyone but decided to check out the other modes today...

So. The Tutorials/Practices suck. They don't stick to what they're trying to teach which makes them a poor chance to learn.

Punch practices say they're gonna be moving around a lot. Good chance to learn how to think ahead and aim your punches. But then they fight back as well which ruins the point of having a specific lesson.

Rush Practice should not have them countering your punches, just using Rush on you so you can learn what to do if someone uses it against you.

What's that? "But real players would do these things"? Well of course they would. But the rest of the game is already a VS mode.
If you add a tutorial or training mode it shouldn't just be the same as any other AI match but with a few more jumps/grabs/counters thrown in.

First time I tried level 4 Grand Prix took me so many tries with spring man before I completed it. Then I tried again with ribbon girl and beat it using only 2-3 continues in total. The final boss barely even touched me.

It's kind of shocking how steep the difficulty curve in this game is. It's a surprisingly deep game.

Knowing when to stick and move and throw two punches instead of one to trap your opponent is like a game of chess.

Okay, I still don't get Skillshot lol. I understand that the more targets you hit the more bonus points you get, but I've literally seen CPUs get 600 point boosts right at the last second.

What is happening in this Anti-Counter Practice?

How is she dodging and punching so often? How is she using a punch so quickly after a grab? How is she aiming her punches at your head when standing on the ground? How is she curving her punches so much? Why is nothing explained?

Byte & Barq testing:

Bouncing and boosting - There is no cooldown on the shockwave. You get a short charge with each bounce. You can bounce continuously on Barq's head, getting a shockwave and charge every time, as long as you don't "boost" into the high jump. Punching also usually disrupts it as Barq wants to get in on the action. You can even travel while bouncing by tilting just a bit (obviously impractical).

Shielding - Barq leaps in front of you when you shield. What a dog.

AI - I think this might be workable once we learn its quirks. Barq seemingly wants to run under you when you jump toward him, as long as he's not engaged in combat. Can traverse the blocks in Ribbon Girl's stage with you.

Why is nothing explained is the key here.

Couple of interesting posts from the ARMS twitter.

Byte & Bark gets increased movement speed during rush activation which no one else does.

Plus ARMS don't only increase damage, but can also increase speed as well. Some ARMS also increase the speed at where they build meter. We already know that some plus ARMS increase throw damage. It differs across ARMS.

Is any of this actually displayed in game?

While I'd agree that the game could do a better job of explaining things and is overly opaque in several areas, you can't expect *everything* to be explained and detailed. It's pretty normal for fighting games (most games, surely) to leave some elements to be discovered by players rather than laid bare in minute detail. And where would you explain such granular detail to be displayed?

If you really want such granular detail, it will be available online from places like here.

Now time to get my ass handed to me in ranked matches!

I've found weirdly that the level of competition has seemed higher in party mode than ranked. I'm at level 7 ranked (which I appreciate is not high) and it's been fairly easy compared to some of the brutal drubbing I've received in party mode. I thought party would be my 'relaxed' mode, but it actually turns me into a fucking salt mine in comparison.

So atrocious with anyone BUT Twintelle, who I've now managed to go through GP4 with. Now time to get my ass handed to me in ranked matches!

It's interesting that high ranked japanese players from that video use a lot of the punching glove type arms for the best precision and aim and they don't care as much about the elements.

Adds some weight to the developers words of high level play being more offensive than defensive, but we'll see how the game evolves in the coming weeks.

I wouldn't call that offensive play, a lot of it is pretty safe at medium/max distance. It becomes more of a precision hitting and guessing game.

Got the Switch Bundle with Arms preordered. Saving it as a gift for finishing summer semester, so reading this thread will keep me alive in the meantime. This was always my most anticipated game for the Switch.

I saw nothing weird when I did it. Like, just play more and experiment more and you'll be able to do all the things she does.

As for how to beat her... You just gotta use one arm to get her to do something and then use the other arm to counter her counter. I recommend using one arm that's good at "poking" and a second one that's good at getting airborne opponents. It teaches you how to be simultaneously safe and aggressive.

Anyone got any tips for playing vs ribbon girl? I find when she comes up in ranked and party I groan, because if they use their aerial mobility smartly it can be an utter pain to land your blows. I feel like most of my most humiliating defeats have been at the hands of that floaty douche.

I only JUST realised that you can't move when you throw a punch. No wonder my punches weren't curving right, I was tilting the stick in the direction I wanted to go...

Maybe I'm a dumbass, but I'm already doing so much better now that I can actually aim where I want to punch :p

Edit: just need to find a way how to not let these goddamn Chakram's go behind the enemies instead of curving them into their faces.

This game is so fucking amazing! I haven't felt this excited about a fighting game since Street Fighter IV.
ARMS just feels fresh all around. One thing I really love about it is that it's so easy to explain how to play it to my friends but it's really hard to get good at it.
Hundreds of hours of gameplay incoming lol

I wish you could remap the controls. I can't get used to shielding with the control stick so I rarely shield at all.

Yup. It'd make so much more sense to have it be one or both of the shoulder buttons. There have been plenty of times where I've tried to block but it doesn't register.

I'm really confused as to why they made B/A the main punching buttons in the tutorial, otherwise being able to swap B/A for blocking, and being able to swap L/R to block and B/A to use your special would make the control scheme for gamepad perfect for me.
(Or heck, L for block, R for special would be killer)

Use the triggers to punch, it works a lot better and frees your thumb for dodge/jump.

What's the justification for tethering players together in 2v2? Is it just to avoid players dodging each other all round and to make throws more viable?

It probably makes the targeting a lot more manageable and it's less chaotic to avoid punches if you know the opposing team can only be within in a certain area.. That and possibly it's more strategic somehow.

I do, I mean that B and A would have been perfect for mapping block to instead of punch, but their choice of B/A for punch in the tutorial confuses me into thinking they intend it to be the standard.

I see a lot of Kid Cobras online.

Any advices how to make single arms hit against fast moving characters like Min Min, Ribbon Girl and Ninjara?

Also someone online grabbed me three times in row with Ninjara. Literally. I hardly had time to get up before he grabbed me again. It was weird.

That totally makes sense, though I find most 2v2s devolve into complete chaos anyway as players glom up into this small area firing endless punches with the hope that one breaks through. That or pulling their tethers apart and panic-punch while jumping up and down at the end.

Ah sorry, I get you- yeah, it's weird that the triggers aren't presented at all (as far as I can remember), nevermind not made standard. Just makes so much more sense. I wonder with the click-in to block they were trying to mirror the slightly awkard movement you have to make with motion controls. No doubt it'd be easier to block with L as you suggest, though at least your thumb is always on the l-stick.

Gave normal controls another try and they finally clicked. I'm almost a convert since I can still curve the Arms I need to curve, plus I seem to be more accurate with aiming my punches. The only thing I really miss from motion controls is the wider grab. Still have to experiment more to see if this is the way to go.

How big of a disadvantage do normal controls put you at compared to motion controls? Thinking of getting this game but I absolutely hated the motion controls in the testpunch, but all the high ranked streamers I've watched make it seem like someone using the control sticks won't stand a chance online since you can't aim your arms in separate directions.

Played it for 30 minutes with a friend on Friday. We haven't touched it since. Not because it's bad or anything. Its just been way too hot and miserable the past few days to enjoy a game like Arms.

so any first impressions after a few days?
Amazing game. I love this as much as Rocket League and MK8 for my online fix.

It's very intense though. And I tend to not be able to put the controllers down once I start. It's one of the most addictive new games I've played in a long time.

I need at least one faster arm and/or one large/slow moving arm in my arsenal to quickly counter these guys. The mid sized ones are not fast enough nor big enough to do the job.

I'm sure this has been asked before but what's the best way to grind for arms?

so far I've just been running through grand prix at level 2 and I usually end with 30-50 coins
