This. Red meat isn't necessary.

With food though there are many things that are not necessary.

We could all drink Soylent, for example. People like the taste of red meat and that's why they eat it. I don't think a lot of people eat it reluctantly thinking that it's healthy for them. You can argue that it's selfish or destructive for them to do so, but whether it's necessary or not seems somewhat irrelevant.

Milk is for babies what?

Milk is awesome fu Arnold

I've read the opposite. What insects were these people eating? I honestly curious because I've read Crickets in general are lean, full of tons of protein, and their exoskeletons often contain a lot of nutrients. They don't taste bad either, meal worms too. Fry those up and they're like popcorn chicken.
Crickets have almost no nutritional value and their exoskeletons are full of sodium. You can't even feed them to frogs without vitamin supplements because they're such an incomplete meal. You can't even feed frogs mealworms either because of the high saturated fat content, you might as well be eating deepfried cheese curds. It fucks up their liver and is super bad for humans too.

Bugs are bad for you. Each one has more bad stuff than good stuff and you have to eat so fucking many to get any protein at all that you get net negative benefits.

Arnold dissing milk honestly makes me think less of him.

It amazes me how many "character pigs out comically" scenes anime does and yet not a single one of them are funny. It's like they're done more out of obligation because that's what's expected in anime. To me it's almost more subversive to see characters eating normally in an anime.

GAF & meat is like the NRA & guns. Less of both would make the world a better place.

This analogy is fantastic. Two groups who are rooted in their ways. It reminds of self proclaimed "activists" who still wear leather or clothing obviously made in sweatshops. The negatives are there, but NOPE they love that red meat.

man i love arnold and I want to listen to him but I love meat too :( Maybe if I only eat steaks while watching an Arnie movie or something

There are a lot of fucked up things around the stuff we eat, like how most animals are raised and I'm pretty sure 100 years from now our descendants will think very poorly of us for the way we ate. I do notice as I get older my taste buds aren't as strong anymore, already my meat consumption is probably down 20-30% from a decade ago and I'm sure it'll drop even more as I eat less. Biggest thing for me was cutting out junk food, rarely eat sweets or chips/etc anymore.

Why does "meat" = "red meat"? Also why do you have to completely stop doing something because it has negative benefits if you do way too much of it?

People keep reacting as if some study confirms that meat consumption is bad for your body and I don't think that's the message. The message (in line with "cowspiracy" for those interested) is that our meat cultivation for consumption has a MASSIVE effect on our environment. It's an aspect always overlooked by save the earth organisations, largely I believe because they know that it's a battle that won't be won anytime soon. I personally am a meat eater and don't have any intentions of stopping, but cutting back is certainly a possibility.

I'd like to see a PETA video showing me cute fishes dying or being taken away from their mothers.
Nothing wrong with fish. Its meat that people consume way too much.
Fish is arguably the worst for the environment and can be bad for you because of mercury and the like. The good news is that fish is probably the most ethical to eat because they're so stupid. But then there's the environmental impact again which makes it less ethical.

But if you eat octopus/squid you're a monster.

We should all definitely be cutting back on it, at least.

I only eat meat once per day, and it's usually chicken.

Only once per day? Sorry but that made me chuckle.

Meat consumption is way too high in first world countries and it's way too cheap to actually raise livestock in an "ethical" way, but I can't see this changing anytime soon unfortunately.

Just eat a lot of salmon if you're so concerned about mercury for some reason. Perfect fish for that since it is so low in content.

I buy a lot of chicken these days also, I tend to stick to that over red meat.

Kind of sick of feeling like an asshole for enjoying some chicken, turkey, and pork here and there.

Not to be stubborn but I already limit my red meat and fish intake. I enjoy meat. It's flavorful and satisfying. It probably does factor into my diet once a day on average. Is it skippable? Absolutely, but I still enjoy it. And, if I don't buy and eat it then those animals are being slaughtered for nothing.

Call me when wide, sweeping change is upon us because until then, I'm participating in meat eating. Not going to let the people who need their daily McDoubles ruin it for the rest of us.

And, if I don't buy and eat it then those animals are suffering for nothing.

Huh, by buying you're creating more demand which will lead to more animals being slaughtered.

Like, you can eat meat if you want but that's a pretty bad rationalisation.

I know it's a bad rationalization but it's...unavoidable.

You abstain completely then you're risking the meat going to waste, moral high ground aside.

You participate, it creates demand which only perpetuates the problem. Best you can do is wait for heavily discounted meat that will go bad the day after you buy (so that you know you're saving a piece of meat from the garbage bin).

That's why I don't have an issue buying modest amounts of meat. Might as well just settle in the middle until society is ready to make some big shift away from meat. I mean, bring it on, but until then I just can't justify MORE restrictions than I already put on myself.

As a singular person it's just one of those unwinnable things.

Every time people talk about climate change (not here specifically, everywhere) it's all "oh my god this is terrible we have to fix this, but what can I do??"

And then every time someone points out that probably the biggest thing you can personally do is to cut your meat consumption from factory farming as close to zero as possible, the same people are immediately like "zomg I eat 3 burgers a day with bacon on the side and I'll never stop roflcopter!!!"

It actually is basically the same thing as the NRA now that I think about it. Thoughts and prayers, but if anyone asks for a personal sacrifice to actually address the problem, fuck off, you'll get my [gun/steak] from my cold dead hands.

So...we'll continue to be fucked lol.

I'm not a vegetarian myself btw, because meat is delicious and variety is important, but I don't eat meat every single day and if you ignore chicken I could easily cut beef and pork out entirely, I have that maybe once a week. I genuinely prefer tofu to most meats tbh.

If I had to sacrifice most of the meat in my diet, I'd be willing to increase my tofu intake. That stuff is great.

When I say I love tofu, people always give me a weird look.

Feel kind if weird for enjoying fake meat and other vegetable protein products as well. Not sure why. Being alternative like that makes me feel like I stand out.

At the very least I'm already somewhat prepped for any moment where real meat would need to be dropped 100%. Part of the problem or not, I've already taken steps to reduce overall intake as I've naturally moved towards meat alternatives and delicious vegetables anyway. But yeah, I don't see myself cutting chicken, turkey, pork, and even lamb out entirely until a massive systemic change is upon us.

Ridiculous.

... there's no way the meat will still be in my hands. You'll have to pry it from my cold, seized bowels. And good luck... they're likely to be impacted from eating too much meat!

If the argument is about the amount of gases cows shoot out, is there another animal that produces meat that when measured at a 1:1 ratio gives off less harmful gas? Lamb?

Sure thing, eighties action icons.

I'll give up meat forever for the good of the planet when you two give up private jet use, forever.
