(Arstechnica) Analysis: Sony continues to widen its console sales lead over Microsoft

So basically, if Ms and sony's end over end increases somehow stayed consistent, MS would finally ship more then sony that year what, a decade from now? Assuming that somehow they were able to produce and ship what looks like 50+ million units each per year?

With a market cap of what, several hundred million in total sales each?

It's absurd on pretty much all levels, and honestly, is fairly a grim picture for MS. It's also rather silly an article, unless it really drives home how absurd the whole projection is.

If his conclusion that Xbox One sold more than the same quarter last year is correct, MS would probably have said something about it, right?

Then he goes on to use that conclusion to make graphs...

2038:

By 2040, just Xbox Ones outnumber humans (PS4s take until 2045 to reach this landmark). By 2050 there are over ten consoles for each human (and 80% of them are Xbox Ones).

I rarely post on gaming side, but this chart got a real laugh out of me.

On another side, where does this guy gets his figures ? Seems like a pretty optimistic evaluation for Microsoft ? In any cases, it's far from accurate, and he proceed to evaluate a very inacurate year on year evolution, then proceed to multiply that huge incertitude every year... I can't.

If you really want to extrapolate, a simple linear extrapolation of sales would be much more fitting. Better yet take into account the lifespan of consoles and the probably gaussian-ish shape of sales over time. There you have it, Xbox ain't catching up that train

No point making a delusional argument, it doesn't prove anything... it certainly doesn't prove that Xbox would catch up in year 2025 +/- 10, but it doesn't prove it won't either.

Amazing. Yes, selling 100 units one year and 1,000 units the next is a larger YoY percentage growth (900%) than selling one million the first year and three million the next (200%). But that's just so ridiculously irrelevant. And it's not like either of them will sustain the same growth rate year after year.

I started a diet guys, lost 2lbs last month. I just made a graph, best case scenario, I should weight 4lbs by 2024, numbers donnt lie!

This is what makes the article even more hilarious.

You would think that if Xbox One is really up YoY in the last quarter like Kyle Orland so generously estimates it to be, then the masters of spin at Microsoft would not have suddenly decided to completely stop giving hardware numbers.

One interesting tidbit. Xbone and WiiU sales combined can't even match the PS4. Pretty incredible.

That graph is a bit skewed tho. Ps4 lead should be much more apparent.

Yet more interesting points... and still some people state that the main point the article was trying not to make was to show Xbox One could not close the gap with PS4... Heh ;).

If I made the equivalent of those graphs for my job i'd get laughed at then fired for being a time wasting dumb ass

I wanted to make a graph but then I got high
(ooooooohh)

I didn't mean to make people laugh but then I got high
(la da da)

Now my numbers are all fucked up and I know why
(Why man)

Because I got high
Because I got high
Because I got high

But it............is the point of the article.

Indeed. Best comedy I saw this week.

Beautiful.

Science, how does it work?

This is such a bad way to use numbers.

And there's just no way X1 will ever overtake the Ps4 in this current universe. Not in 2024, not in 2044, not in EVER. I can't think of any plausible theory in where the X1 would start outselling the Ps4 WW.

This is why I'm actually glad that, in a sense, Nintendo has been relegated to "doing their own thing" rather than directly competing with the others. They'll carve out their own place in the market rather than fighting to be nothing more than a worse (and less successful) version of the other similar console.

All Sony had to do was make A LOT of good decisions with PS4 from the outset, which they did, and they were guaranteed to beat Microsoft and the XB1 for the entire generation.

There's little room for mistakes anymore and MS fucked up.

Well, Nintendo made a lot of mistakes and fucked up pretty badly with the Wii U.

Without the "help" of Sony or MS.

With such a brilliant analytical method, why would the writer of that article stop so soon?

We can extrapolate further into the future, confident that the growth rate will remain stable for decades to come:

Beautiful I'm sure this would get an A in like math 3 lol.

We are witnessing history here friends this graph 📈 will live on forever in this gen. I look forward to seeing it in sales threads for years

Nintendo screwed the pooch so badly they were forced even further into their own bubble, which may be a good thing (for them) in the long run.

Not sure what to say about MS. Once you fail to "beat the other guy" you're just facing an uphill battle, along with endless comparisons that put you constantly on the losing side.

Let me just say, I'm glad I went X360 last gen to PS4 this gen. At this point, Sony is just playing the game better, period.

I'm waiting to see a similar chart based on the post-season sales drop. It would probably make 2024 seem pretty dismal.

Those graphs, conclusions and basically the entire article must have been made with the sole purpose of getting clicks and views. No one with a healthy amount of common sense would find those predictions realistic, not to mention believable.

Wow, the intent of the article flew right over the head of a lot of posters, the point is that Xbone needs a miracle to outsell PS4.

There are a million other ways to convey that point that doesn't include these fucking ridiculous graphs.
Nah bro, this is the most succint way to make this point. This is a beacon of hope for games journalism and must be defended.

Yea it doesn't.

It's literally saying that the Xbone needs 10 years of exponential rate of growth to hit PS4 sales on the same trend.

Thus revealing how large an absolute lead there is.

And yet GAF can't understand that.

Yeah, it was pretty obvious they were saying it's essentially impossible outside of a miracle.

It's using an inherently ridiculous premise to make that claim, but the ridiculous premise invalidates any conclusion -- positive OR negative. This graph does not prove the Xbone is eventually going to win, but neither does it prove the Xbone is eventually going to lose.
