ArsTechnica: Hackers unlock NES Classic, upload new games via USB cable

Is there still a list somewhere of compatible and incompatible titles? There used to be a Google spreadsheet somewhere but I haven't seen it in a while and can't seem to find it with Google.

Hey All,
I just want to say I really, sincerely and truly was not trying to cause any friction last night and was just sincerely asking for help. I knew it may not be 110% kosher, but I was damn sincere when I say the ROMS I was interested in I did own. I am 42. The NES was a staple for myself for so, so many years. So once I read I could add additional ROMS and I was already pysched about the included 30, well, I may have gotten a tad too excited.

I never posted but I did use the tool posted in the OP with zero issues. Dumped the untouched Kernel first thing. Added 16 additional ROMS to issues at all. My Classic is up and running and it is bad ass. So I do apologize as I was truly like a kid in a candy store. So my apologies. It was not my intent to start any beef at all. I just was curious what the tags meant.

I was also so damn psyched I actually was able to get the Classic from a local GameStop. I had called the 3 closest to me around noon, they said call back within the hour, and every single one sold out within that hour. I tried the off one I never visit and the kid Brian I talked to said yep, I have around 4. When I got to the store 20 minutes later, there was a girl in line purchasing 4. I thought I was fucked. Brian had 2 left and said he had put 1 to the side for me because he could tell I was sincere over the phone. That was awesome. The girl asked me if I was purchasing it for myself or to flip and I replied myself and almost said something snarky to her, but she said all of hers were for family, and I did believe her based on how damn excited she was for Final Fantasy.

I was just a tad too excited I was able to get my hands on one for the retail cost and that I was also so close to sideloading ROMS with a soft mod. Again, I used the tool linked in the OP with zero issues and it took all of 10 minutes to boot. Even messed up and did not originally get the game covers, used the option in the tool to get them and resynced, and BOOM, they were all there. I look forward to the Carpal Tunnel I am going to get from Track N Field Alone. Also having Rygar and Rush N Attack is a thing of beauty.

It's ok dude don't sweat it :)

I honestly can't see anything that you did that "caused friction". Relax. Enjoy the NES Mini.

So sorry if asked before but is the OP youtube video still the best tutorial on installing newest or closest to newest version of the software?
Or any better ones out there?

Thanks all :)

I used this V2.11 video that's been floating around.

Tested it myself with a few Japanese games. Not everything will work.

I don't suppose there's any way of getting a Famicom style theme on the NES version? What about changing the design of folders? It's hardly important but but it would be a bonus to have some customisation options.

That looks great! I kinda wish I had the know how to do stuff like that!

I had zero point zero knowledge of Raspberry anything, but went and grabbed a Pi, case, adapter for less than $50 and 2 hours of time later?

IMG_20150202_201753.jpg

Not my pic but that is how mine looks...I am even using the 8Bitdo Super Famicom bluetooth controller. It was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be.

I went out and bought a second Pi as well because you can also use it as a Streetpass relay. :p

Hey there, sorry if this has been asked already but I'm looking for a second controller for my NES mini. The Nintendo store seems to be sold out but there are tons available on eBay. Am I to assume that these are unnoficial (and likely terrible) controllers? Thanks.

I don't have any first hand experience with the third party controllers but a couple of good alternatives are the Wii Classic Controller from Walmart for $10 or the Club Nintendo SNES Controller. You can find them on eBay. I managed to get two for $40.

Edit: Buy the cables extenders.

Hmm... ok, I'm a little lost here.

I originally added a few games on my iMac using Parallels. I don't have access to it today, so I went to use a laptop, running windows 7. I went through the steps, but had issues adding more games. I flashed the original kernel back to it. Tested on the tv, everything looked back to stock.

So, I basically started from "scratch" on the laptop, added all the new games I wanted on there. Went through the process, everything looked good. Exited hakchi2 2.11 after the last OK confirmation for the new custom kernel was flashed. Hooked the mini to the tv and it doesn't boot now. Just goes on, off, on, etc. :(

Any suggestions?

Any chance the hackchi tool would be able to eliminate sprite flicker at some point? I know some people might want to keep it for authenticity, but I think it would be cool to see it removed.

How did you flash your original kernel to it if you didn't have access to the computer that dumped it?

My friend and I were playing through Contra today when suddenly the system randomly decided to reboot after we had been playing for awhile. Is there something I need to watch out for so this doesn't happen? It was pretty poor timing. We also had an instance where my friend died and when he took one of my lives, his character model was invisible and he couldn't see it for the duration of the life. Does this have to do with some flicker settings? How do I disable seizure mode?

How do I go about moving to a newer version of Hakchi? I've been using 8 and wanted to switch to 10/11 for the controller reset. When I started the process of synchronizing, I get this message:

"Warning!

Kernel dumped but MD5 checksum is unknown: {0} df6d9a5637811f93cfde4c20aeaecc56

Maybe kernel already patched or it's unknown revision. Continue on your own risk."

Said no, since I wasn't sure was it was going to do. Do I need to dump the kernel on the old version or something? Moving to a new version won't lose my save states right?

EDIT: Nevermind. Seemed to have figured it out.

How do I disable seizure mode?

In the latest version of hakchi2, you can disable this for all games via Settings > Epilepsy protection

The warning message popped up because you dumped the kernel of your already hacked system. That's what's causing the unknown checksum. Did you back up your original kernel before deleting v8 and moving on to v10/11? Probably not a huge deal if you didn't--you can always use someone else's backup if you ever need it.

And yes, your save states will remain between versions. No worries about losing them.

I put all of the supported games (650+!) on my NES Classic last night. I'm thinkin' I'm going to bring that number down to less than 100. Folders, while cool, are pretty cumbersome.

My wife wants the original 30 on the UI, I'd like to have just a couple of folders with extra games (Maybe another 60?) How do we configure it to have the 30 original and just 2 folders. Would that work?

There is a reddit one here. And I found this one on gbatemp

I think that's being looked at for a future version

I should be getting mine tomorrow so I've been looking through my old Nintendo controllers and managed to find these, both in mint condition.

Am I correct in thinking that I'm able to use the Home button on both types of controller to Reset the console? I know that I'd need to use the same cable that I used to connect the Smash Brothers controller to the Wii U but I'm not sure if it's only Wii controllers that allow me to reset.

I'm amazed how many Wii/Wii U controllers that I've managed to find. 🙂

I have the NES Mini and was wondering if there is a wireless controller that everyone recommends..using the controller that comes with the mini is way too short looking for something longer

Grrr, every update seems to break something as it fixes something else for me!

Now the original Famicom Mini games can be displayed I decided to put them back on again since I'd hid them since first using hakchi, but now all I get are the original 30 and no others. I have the folders set to 30, but I can't see any other folders to navigate to.

I guess hiding the original 30 will let me see the games I've put on, but I'd like to have both.

Most people are using controller extensions which are cheap and easy to get.

I think you could fudge this already by setting pages to 30 and putting a late ascii table character at the start of each of the extra game names. "~ Duck Tales" etc.

Do note that the Classic Controller you've linked isn't the OEM product, so its quality may be...dicey.

Oh, damn. I made that post pretty quick. Anyhow, for anyone following this line of the thread, the Classic Controller is a fine option. (an official one)

After putting 110 games in it and changing the number of titles shown in the menu to 40, sometimes the system resets itself when browsing the game list. Is it a known issue?

When I purchased the NES classic realized some subtles changes in some games graphics, now thanks to this thread I know that those were made to protect against the epilepsy. It's great that you can disable them with the hack.

So uh... any way of pulling a game's save data and savestates from the Mini onto the PC somewhere, somehow with this?

Playing through old school RPG's is surprisingly fun with this, but less so when 15 hours into the game it glitches out (I presume because of the translation patch). Swapping rom files doesn't help either as apparently it'll just get rid of the old save data and savestates. Lame.

I'm not having any luck with this at all.

After flashing and connecting the NES mini to my TV, all that happens is the power light slowly flashes on and off. I've tried flashing a few times and from what I can tell it always seems to go exactly a it should but I always get the same thing when I plug it back into my TV.

The only potential issue that after flashing I get the message in hackchi (v2.11) to, I'm paraphrasing here, "Wait until the red light switches off and restart the NES Mini". For me, this seems to be where the slow flashing starts, it goes off for a couple of seconds but then back on again. I do wait but the light doesn't stay off.

I relation to the requested restart, what should I be doing here? I've tried switching it off and back on using the Mini's power button, I've tried restarting wit the console's Restart button and also by unplugging then replugging the USB lead but whichever I try it just persists with the slowly flashing power light.

What type of "restart" is hackchi waiting for?

Has anybody else heard of similar issues to these this?

It's annoying I only really want to add a couple of games that I feel are "missing" from the console and customise the controller so that I can reset to the menus by holding the Start and Select buttons on the default controller. I love the console but those two things would make it perfect for me. 😕

Change the path that you have the hakchi saved in. Put it in c:\hakchi. I had the same problems that you're having. Changing it from the C:\Downloads\Hakchi to C:\Hakchi and that solved the problem for me.

Wait, are you saying I should just move hackchi.exe to c: ? So I shouldn't have it inside any folders?

That just seems far too simple!! Thank you so much, I can't try it at the moment but I'll have a go later on and report back. 🙂
