Arstechnica: Would you consider a disc-free console option?

If only we as consumers welcomed Xboxone's future just like Orland ars tech piece in 2013 lamented. Then Kyle Orland 2013, 2015 and 2017 articles could have been redeemed as visionary.

Had it been implemented nobody would care today.
There's been outrage every time Apple have forced consumers to go a certain way and time and time again it's proven to be an advantage.

Probably has something to do with digital console games being nothing like digital music/movies. You don't lose your digital movie/music library just because you bought a new device.

You're right but on the other hand my Wii U and 3DS didn't both combust when bought into contact with a Switch last month. My digital libraries weren't lost on either.
It's not convenient to hook up old hardware to access past libraries but inconvience doesn't suddenly render them inaccessible.

My point still stands. I don't have to keep old music players because my digital music is locked to it.

You understand that digital console games are poorly handled, so why would you find it weird that people aren't happily embracing it the way they have music and movies?

I sold my Wii U to purchase my Switch. My digital purchases are gone. My PS3 digital games are gone. I have a shitload of digital Xbox 360 games that will disappear when my system kicks the bucket. It's unacceptable.

This is it in a nutshell.

I am going to buy another PS3 soon just because I have a boatload of digital games on it I still havent played.

I have a PC without an optical drive, does that count?

But in all seriousness, if you sold me a console SKU without a disk drive that is cheaper than one with, I would buy the one without and download all of my games.

Sure sure, if we ignore the historical record where the consumer back lash (in the market being discussed) was so strident and pre orders were so low MS had to 180deg their vision of the future and Mehdi 4 years later cites the lesson learnt was "add features consumers wanted."

Note the XBOX one is being outsold 2 to 1 world wide because of the damage caused by their attitude of company knows best. How's the digital based Ouya doing again?

No.

As a collector it's a hard no.

And just no. I don't trust the digital future at all.

Also, they would have to put enough storage space on the console for me not to have to delete stuff all the time.

Sure, if it is cheaper. And not just $50, but $100 - $150. Which won't happen.

I don't care that much about replaying old games on consoles.

Yes, if there's enough storage and the online store is as relaible as Steam (with tons of sales). Biggest problem with all digital on console is that you only have one digital store to buy from, and they usually fuck it up in some way. either it's shit speeds, poor UI, or just full of bugs.

I guess if you like paying more for your games. Have fun to anyone buying GTA 5 and many other games that are still a full $59.99 on the PS Store when you can get them much cheaper physically.

I'm fine with digital as long as there's physical as well. I will never get behind the idea of an all digital future.
