thanks, guys! I really appreciate the kind responses and messages.

I'm applying to Art Center, and I was wondering if anybody would be interested in an Concept Artist thread? Kind of a community thread where we can give advice, exchange resources, post our progress and inspiration...with regards to concept art or design. Something that is like the Draw every day thread, but more geared toward industry work.

I feel like there is a good amount of people who are interested in that sort of thing here, but I'm not sure.

here's another sketchbook thing, sorry for the shit quality:

i only know of myself and one other industry concept artist here on GAF, im not entirely sure if there are enough of us to support a thread on a regular basis though. i could be wrong however, so lets keep the idea in mind and ill ask around.

I lurk in this thread a lot but technically, a thread like that already exists in the form of the Art Self Study thread. People can ask for critiques in that thread or in the other thread. In my humble opinion, it's a pretty crowded affair already. This thread has its share of pro artists in addition to aspiring artists but given that it's a community thread, it's rather obscure. EDIT: I should mention that I'm all for it so it has my vote in case I sound neutral.

And fantastic work by the way. I'm getting major Mad Max vibes from it. It's motivational/inspiring.

Nah, there's a lot more concept artists here on GAF but some of them don't all that often on GAF any more. I can think of several off the top of several GAF members off my head including Raging Spaniard, DM_Uselink, zoukka, ph4ndy (works for Splash Damage), m0dus, TheBaroness, and jetpack says yes (at least the last time I checked, he did) in addition to several aspiring concept artists including servbot24, and Alcotholic. I'm not a concept/paid professional artist for reference (just a budding artist trying to build an audience at the moment) but I'm pretty well aware of the artist scene here on GAF.

I'm curious, just how do some of you guys build an audience? I know having a social media presence and constantly posting art is a huge part of it (already have that stuff) but how exactly? Nobody teaches you how to market yourself unless you went to art school (I didn't and I occasionally deal with my share of doubts).

I'm down for a concept art thread. No idea how much activity it would have, but doesn't hurt to try!

Speaking of concept art, here are some character designs I did for an RPG with with post-modern influence:

I'm in!

A thread on gaming side would be great, we could keep it strictly about video game concept art. Post concept art from all the big releases and stuff. Post our own work too, talk about cool stuff happening in that part of the industry.

I know a lot of people really like concept art nowadays so it could work.

Practicing environments. Still can't seem to get exactly what I want in the canvas, but slowly getting closer. For this one I don't like most of the right half of the image, but the left side is pretty much the image I had in mind.

Did 90% of this drawing on Thursday during the work breaks and at home a bit, finished it earlier today adding another one hour to it.

That looks pretty sweet Mik!

I'm also down for a concept art thread. I still have a way's to go myself and learning from others who have more experience is always welcome!

Here's the image that made it to the Capcom Fighting Tribute book. I had entered a few of their contests in the past, and I guess third time's a charm.

...and here is another image for Failsafe, the indie game I'm currently helping out with!

Thanks Uselink! Your stuff is awesome too, love your colors!

Oh and I'm also up for an actual concept art thread, if you ask me. But keep it to stuff done by users here, not stuff from elsewhere!

I think posting art from elsewhere is good for motivation and education. But it definitely shouldn't be a thread to just dump some art from your favorite game.

I can get it started later today if no one else wants to. Let me know any suggestions you may have! :)

Mik, are you familiar with Simon Stalenhag's stuff? This image reminded me a bit of his works (left part especially).
His natural use of color blows my mind.

Anyway, i really like how organic and natural the bend on that spine looks.

Hey! I think I've seen one or two of his things around pinterest, but didn't actually know the name of the artist! Lots of really good stuff in there, thank you for the link!

Hopefully one day I can do some stuff that looks as cool as that, hahaha!

Xgen tests in Maya. Total rip of Lee Grigg's work, admittedly, but I couldn't resist. When I have some free time later this year I have an idea I'd like to try out using a similar method.

haha i'm down!

Wacky design you got there Servbot! The feathers and bow sorta remind me of Horizon, but the crazy spike legs are scary, haha. I guess the stuff on the shoulders are some sort of hedgehog-looking animal fur and spines?

thanks! yeah the shoulders are just some kinda quill things. I initially just had the feathers but I needed more detail on the upper half of the body to make sure attention didn't get too focused on the lower half

your environments are looking great! can't lie, i'm a bit jealous at well you're cranking those out, lol. Sparth best watch his back

Haha, Sparth is (pretty obviously) one of my main inspirations for the way I drew those sketches, would be nice to one day get some stuff at least close to his 30 mins doodles :D

Did this 360 stereo panorama for a rendering competition. Kinda ran out of time. More things I would've liked to have tried/added. In retrospect, a hint at a planet or moon or two would've been a fantastic thing to have added... even a planetary ring hinting at literal parallel metaverses. Also new with the rendering engine, so couldn't figure out how to do some of the stuff I wanted.

But it was a fun challenge - unique to what I've done before, and kinda a cool and different artform. Hopefully the piece is able to convey my ideas about what the metaverse could be without me having to say much.

But if you prefer to read about it:
Basically the metaverse is an interconnected shared community VR space. It's a wild and wooly place full of fantasy and impossibilities. So you get a mix of flying whales, futuristic spaceships, flying islands with a mix of architecture. These places are all connected by nodes of light - signfying that users can teleport from one location to another. Islands are grouped by themes.

You stand in the middle of a social VR space called 'The Metaverse Club' - and the idea is that it's impossible architecture that's got a mix of what you know (to ground you with expectations) and what you know can't happen (to blow away those expectations).

I think social VR will be a big important part of VR in the future - and it'll be made more enticing if users commune in visually interesting and attractive spaces. Some of those spaces can be calming without been sedate.

There are already places like this in VR; VR Chat, Altspace, etc. So it's kinda inspired by some of that. Would be cool to come into a space like this and watch TV with friends, listen to music, or even just read a book. I imagine you could easily transition between more social activities like playing a board game and simply seeking some refuge from the bustle, without even changing the space you're in.

If you have a Gear VR, you can actually try it out in full 360 head tracking stereo.

Otherwise the cubemap still gives you a good idea of where I was trying to go with it.
