Assassin's Creed Unity - PC Performance thread

Apparently the solution for PC gamers is to simply disconnect from the internet:

http://redd.it/2m7ryt

It is butter smooth then. DRM is using the same processor core as the game, or something like that.

I tested this as well. No difference in mean fps between online/"online->offline with live disconnect of ethernet cable"/"uplay in offline mode". I was testing near a large crowd in Paris. 45-50 avg fps in the middle of things (briefly down to 40 one time), more like 55-60 climbing up a building, and 75-80 looking up at rooftops/sky. Repeated a little walk for the three online settings that I tested and got the same result.

Specs: 3570k@4.6Ghz, 8 gig ram, 2 x geforce 780 sli, ssd drive, win7 64 bit

You can use adaptive v sync with 1/2 refresh rate via inspector or nvidia control panel. This will lock your framerate to 30. You can also use afterburn and force the normal v sync.

Thanks.
I got a very steady 30 fps.
Not the ideal to parry, but i'll get used to it, the game as laggy controls no matter what, anyway.

So is SLI still severely broken for anyone else? With my ideal settings config, I'll run 1 card fine and very playable FPS. I run 2 cards, and boom, it runs at a slightly slower fps with all sorts of stuttering... WTH Nvidia

The SLI profile is working very well for me. Do you have Nvidia Inspector? What are the SLI bits you have for Unity?

Check for updates on Geforce experience. Even if it shows nothing, it will give you the updated SLI profile.

Enable v-sync "smooth" setting in the nvidia control panel. That eliminated the stuttering for me.

Playing offline actually fixed my stutter (or it was a huge coincidence that I started playing offline at the exact moment where the stuttering was gone).

Yeah I didn't think I was the only one. The moment I started playing online again, boom. dropped down to 20's fps and stuttering.

The latest SLI Profile is 0x0A0010F5 (Assassin's Creed Unity). It was released yesterday I think. Update through Nvidia Experience. Make sure the "Game and Program Porfiles..." option is checked.

Use 0x0A0010F5 instead.

Edit: b10.

OMG! finally! Doing all the above things has fixed all stuttering. SLI is working! Thank you GAF!

Paris

This is the last night I'll have this GPU. I went ahead and downloaded 14.11.1 that apparently helps with this game and set everything to maximum settings at 1080p w/ FXAA. The most intensive parts bring the framerate down to the mid 20s and the minimum is 22. Rooftops, combat, and outdoor run above 30 more often than not.

Capping to 30 keeps a more stable framerate with 25 being the worst of it. It's not ideal, but playable at the very least.

How does the frame rate far in paris? Im still in versailles frame rate is actually decent abotu 45-60 1440p everythign maxed and msaa 2x. Drops during cutscenes but i can live with that not much stutter either on sli 780 tis

You should probably lower textures down from Ultra to get good performance in Paris. I would also recommend locking your fps to 30 to get a consistent experience. Sadly, the starting area is not very representative ...

hmmmm.....is it just me, or has anybody else noticed inconsistent performance each time you launch the game. I'm getting fairly good fps @ 3200x1800 2xmsaa (~45 on average), but sometimes when I launch the game it stutters every couple of seconds, then I close it, relaunch, and the stutter is gone. Sometimes it seems like restarting my computer does the trick.

Also unplugged the Internet, and disabled the network adapter; it did not make a difference.

Yes, happens to me. One playthrough, I'll be at high settings with steady 30 FPS and when I restart, it dips into low 20s despite everything being on low.

Alright so far I'm getting 30 FPS on high settings (FXAA, HBAO+), on 1080p resolution. My setup: i5 4670k and GTX 760 2GB, 8GB RAM. Not too bad, pretty stable in game but damn unstable in cutscenes which is so weird. Beautiful game though

i5 4670
8GB RAM
GTX 770 2GB
SSD 240GB
Windows 7

Getting 30-40 fps average on High Settings and 1080P. However, the stuttering, oh my god...I swear I have never seen a game with so much stuttering. Its ridiculous.

Not to mention the bug I got during the 1st adult Arno mission. While I was running to catch some thug, the game froze for about 5 seconds, resumed and then the thug stopped running and stood there, waiting for something, then another thug came and hit me, which made the other guy start running again.

Not playing this game on its current shape at all.

Quite a shame, I really liked the previous AC games.

We have the exact same setup lol and same result.

Not just you, I've noticed this as well. Sounds like it could be a memory leak.

Edit: Is anyone experiencing weird white flashes during cut-scenes and sometimes during gameplay? It usually happens when the camera is being panned around, I can see a white flash on either side for a split second.

You only have 2GB of VRAM. Lower you texture setting to Low. The stuttering is caused by the constant memory swapping.

High is for 3GB of VRAM, and Ultra is for 4GB.

A lot of people wouldn't be having such issues if they had realistic expectations from their hardware.

I am, and it's driving me nuts. Sooo distracting!

I'm playing this on slightly unusual hardware I guess.

It's a 2013 trashcan mac pro with 2 Firepro D700's (which roughly equate to the 280x) and a 3.5Ghz 6 core Xeon.

I downloaded the latest AMD beta driver and performance was pretty bad. However I changed the crossfire profile to AFR friendly and my framerate improved dramatically.

One note about this, you need to disable the uplay overlay otherwise the screen flickers like a mofo.

I'm running with Ultra textures, very high environment, high shadows, HBAO+, bloom ON, FXAA and 1080p and I'm sitting at 60fps(sync) with occasional drops.

I'd really like to run it at 1440p, my monitor's native res, but it gets very stuttery.

I was thinking I might try capping my framerate to 30 and running @1440p anyone know the best way to cap the framerate on AMD cards?

I'm honestly surprised I've gotten such good performance out of this game. With all the horror stories I've been reading, I was ready for a stuttering mess. Game runs great on my rig. Everything maxed out, I'm seeing a nice stable 60fps at 1080p. No stuttering. Of course the game itself is glitchy, a lot pop in, npcs doing weird shit, clipping. Other than that, the game looks and plays beautifully. I'm loving it so far. Unlike Watchdogs, Jesus that game was stuttering pos when it came down to performance.

im getting 15FPS on average with an HD7870 with everything set to off or low at 1080P. the FPS jumps to 21 - 23 when changing resolution to 900P. it hits 26FPS at 720P with everything on low

my specs
i7-2500K (no overclock)
16GB RAM
HD7870 2GB

this game is just flat out unplayable for me.

Important to note that you can probably get away with much more at a lower res. I have textures at high @ 1280X1024 (still haven't trashed my old 5:4 monitor) on a 770 2GB with zero stuttering.

But, while I can run Ultra textures, stuttering sets in. It's easy to tell the difference.

Installed the game yesterday. Didn't have time to fiddle with the settings (it was late).
So what should I expect from this game in its current state with this rig:

Core i5 4670K (@default 3.4GHz)
8GB RAM
Gigabyte G1 GTX 970 with latest 344.65 WHQL drivers
1920x1200 resolution.

Any tips and tricks? :/

I have a really similar build to you, I got everything maxed except my shadows are at high instead of PCSS and I'm using TXAA. I'm averaging around 45-60 fps.

How nice - got it to run very consistently with nearly the highest settings and was starting to enjoy it, actually, but suddenly I've reached a point where I cannot proceed. It simply crashes to desktop upon loading my save or trying to progress.

OK, it's working again after killing fraps. Weird.

I am having real trouble with buildings looking like crap, that arent very far from me. Is this a bug or somthing? Im running everything max except textures and shadows on high.

Ultra settings right there, folks.

This is the WORST LoD I've ever seen in a game, it's fucking atrocious. We need a LoD slider option or a patch to fix this.

Holy crap. If those screens are legit consoles do not use the max texture setting.

Well, Nvidia did say that the PC version has higher quality textures and effects, as well as all the other PC exclusive graphical features.

"With the addition of HBAO+, PCSS, TXAA, and DirectX 11 tessellation, the PC edition of Assassin’s Creed Unity extends its advantage over other versions, having already topped them with higher-quality textures and effects, and sharper detail all round."

Jesus Christ, if they're going to degrade the LOD that aggressively, they might as well just slap some silly WD-style DoF on the scene so at least everything looks clean.

e: vvvv Interesting. I don't suppose you'd be willing to take a snapshot from the same vantage point overlooking the church, for comparison purposes?

I have NEVER seen anything like that in the game after more than 15 hours of playing it. That must be a bug similar to what we saw in Infamous Second Son:

I see the same, I'm not sure it's a bug.

The LOD is locked on both consoles and PC. No setting has any effect on it. I thought it could be I was using a 900p screen, but if you see that at 1080p then it might just be the PC version for everyone.

The IQ on the consoles versions is so bad that it's impossible to tell. It doesn't even look like a current gen game.

previously on: AC:U the PC performance thread, GTX 970/780Ti edition.

If you want to play in the 60-45 fps region:

Do not use PCSS shadows, swith to high.
Do not use any kind of 'fency' AA-methode. FXAA is your way to go, If you do not like FXAA at all, try to force SMAA with Nvidia tools or sweet FX.
Do not use Ingame Vsync, play in borderless or use other methods (whatever works best for you).
Rest can be on ultra/max. But that depends on you.

Next on: AC:U the PC performance thread, GTX 970/780Ti edition.

OMG Tessellation patch is out. Looks good but performance is terrible. Bad optimization confirmed.

Yeah, it's the same type of thing - the assets simply failed to load properly for some reason.

This is the kind of shit im getting. I played this game for 6 hours on release day and didnt notice any of this. I only noticed it yesterday in a coop mission.

Look at buildings/objects in the distance next time you're playing. They appear as smudges with no detail at all. Detail returns once you get closer to them.

I'm not sure it's an actual bug. The trick is that those screenshots are from high above, while zoomed in. So they give the illusion they are really close when they are not.

I wonder if it's a bug because it's the exact thing I saw on my screen. So, it's a bug or just weirdness for the two of us?
