Assassin's Creed Unity - PC Performance thread

How does one tell what version of the game he has?

I have tried to force the game to update but it won't. Tried to verify the integrity through steam and no updates have been downloaded in past two days.

PCGaming Wiki is your best friend http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Assassin%27s_Creed_Unity

On the start menu(Both the menu you get when you first open the game and the menu you get from pressing start) it should say a version number bottom right of the screen. On the menu from pressing start you might have to be highlighting an option which doesn't have a little window in the right off(In other words highlight database or options to check ver no)

Does anyone experience a complete freeze/hang for a couple of seconds in game?
I'm roaming around the first town/village, just checking the game out, when every couple of minutes everything freezes only to continue a couple of seconds later.
WTF? Is that the draw call issue? Does the CPU literally stops at that point or what? Dammit Ubi. :/

Not nearly as often as that, but yes.

SLI 980s +80mhz core, +400mhz memory
3930k @ 4.8Ghz
16Gb 1600Mhz DDR3

I upped the textures to ultra, and i average about 30-35fps, but there is noticeable stuttering at times. Looks amazing though:

That location didn't demolish your performance? That was the particular scene that caused my performance to drop into the 30 fps range at 1080p.

Awesome. Thanks.

I take it the stuttering using ultra at 4k is down to VRAM?

Here's the version 1.1 video I uploaded for comparison sake for when I'm eventually forced to update. Just running around doing Assassin's Creed stuff.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOsQofMhJ00

Settings:
1080p
Environment Quality: Ultra High
Texture Quality: Ultra High
Shadow Quality: PCSS
Ambient Occlusion: HBAO+
Anti-Aliasing Quality: FXAA
Bloom: On

Running on:
i7 5820K @ 4.1 Ghz
16 GB DD4 Ram
2x Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming
2x MX100 512 SSDs
MSI X99S SLI Plus MB

Ok so after playing about 6 hours of the game

Geforce GTX 750 Ti 2GB
Intel Core i5 3340 @ 3.10 ghz
8GB Ram

playing with settings on high, v sync on msaa x2, SSAO and at 1080p

In paris I was averaging at 30, when im climbing or high up i go up to about 36 fps. When im in crowds the lowest i dipped was about 26 with huge groups of people around.

Interiors were a bit iffy fps wise with one building raising the framerate and another tanking it. During fights the fps is stable thankfully. I messed with antialiasing a bit with fxaa and turning it off and gained a few frames. When i turned eveything off and turned the settings to low, I could manage about 40fps on average but nothing looked good at all :(

Overall it is playable to me and that works, mostly just wanted to play for the story and the gameplay flows nicely.

Also does anyones framerate tank horribly when you get to certain parts of the menu? Went to change my weapon and fps went down to 15 fps at times.

Fucking hell, did the latest update break the PS Button Overlay? How can I get it back?

EDIT: Nevermind. The game is literally plug & play when using the DS4. I don't even have to use DS4Windows.

Yes, you absolutely should. I've been running my i7 920 at 3.8 for over five years now.
Well I cranked my i7 920 to 4.0 Ghz with a 1.30V, completely stable and the game runs buttery smooth with my 970 at full 1080P, FXAA everything Ultra and PCSS (Soft Shadows). I'm getting 48 - 60FPS most of the time. Big crowds is where the game takes a dip to the high 30's for a few seconds.

Managed to get a stable 35-50fps @ 4K with all highest settings other than textures and AA.
Stahp. I really don't want to jump into 4K yet, but these screens are making it difficult to resist. I'm still within my 30 days of getting my 970 and I keep thinking "I'll just upgrade to the 980 and 4k".... but $200 more for the card and investing in a 4k Monitor is making me say no. What 4k monitor do you have? Is it only 30Hz?

Is it happening even when you're standing still and just watching people pass by? If so, that's what I've been seeing. Locking frame rate in inspector to 59 has so far fixed it for me.

It unfortunately didn't help. I even followed the Inspector guide and it somehow decreased performance. I am using SLI 680's (2 GB models). Could it be a VRAM issue? I always get stuttering when I run low of VRAM. (Oh and my CPU is a 3770k OC'ed to 4.5 Ghz)

my god, the 1.02 patch just improved everything by massive amounts. on a 680 am running it all on max with fxaa on and i get a steady 30fps almost never idpping. wtf ubisoft, this is all u had to do, was it this hard?

2gb or 4gb 680 ?
Everything on max, really ? Even textures ?

2gb, its amazing. all on ultra and hbao+, shadows on high, fxaa and bloom off. 30+fps constantly with minor hiccups, ill take it, game looks amazing and it plays well even though its not 60fps. mind you though, i have a 4790k and 32gb ddr3 at 2600

Excuse me if I'm not taking your word for it. 2gb and ultra high textures don't mix too well, the game must be absolutely unplayable. Great to see the game works even better after the patch though. :)

Why "even" textures? I have it on max on my laptop and have no stuttering or less FPS.
On high there are many low res textures
Textures don't take much of a performance hit if you have the available VRAM and bandwith. I'm sure a lower GPU than the minimum specs (760) with 4gb could handle the ultra textures in this game but a 2gb 680 ? I don't think so.

^I'm pretty happy at 30fps tbh, AC doesn't desperately need 60 and I can get it rock steady like this even while recording (posted a vid last page). Really pleased with the game.

I have my MSI GTX 760 TF overclocked to 1200 Mhz
With an Intel 4770

I am able to get a solid 30fps with ultra textures and environment, low shadows, FXAA, HBAO+ and Bloom on.

I am getting the fps drops in cut scenes and at random times in larger crowds. I am getting some stutters but few and far between also expected when running ultra textures with 2Gb VRAM.

My biggest complaint is I am getting crashes in cut scenes with any texture level above high, not all the time but often. These crashes corrupt my current save if I am not playing offline.

The pop in is shocking, the cut scene frame rate is shocking and the glitches are shocking.

Did Nvidia update the SLI profile again? I re-installed my drivers and checking for updates in Geforce Experience gives me 0x0A0040F5 in Inspector. I seem to remember the one we got recently was 0x0A0010F5. Can anyone verify this by asking for an update in Geforce Inspector and checking in Nvidia Inspector? Thanks!

EDIT: Nevermind, got it now.

So turns out the overclock on CPU wasn't set...and performance jumped a little after OCing to 4.7 GHz.

Still floating around 30 fps on 4K :/ I'm jealous of you CyberPunked!

why dont you try my settings? as i said, textures and environments on ultra, hbao+, shadows high, bloom off, vsync ON, stretchinf OFF, fxaa. and as i stated, i have 32gb ram at 2600 and a 4790k CPU, so i would say that my crappiest ocmponent here is my GPU and i stand strong in saying that a well optimized game will not require more than a 680 to play, and this is the case here as it has been with mordor and evil within. pure pr stuff. 680 combined with the patch and a very decent amount of ram and cpu power can run this game on ultra with some OTHER stuff toned down at a steady 30fps.

I set uplay to offline mode to avoid any patches until i hear that they actually improve things. So did this patch really improve performance in a noticeable way? Anyone else ?

OMG
Thank You kind sir
I've been waiting for someone to test on 750 Ti

Well, that's a pain in the arse. Using MSI Afterburner/RTSS to limit fps to 30, but in order to accept invites and the like, I need the uplay overlay. Problem is, the normal method of using "custom Direct3D support" in RTSS to enable overlays crashes the game at start up. Anyone know any other methods to getting RTSS and Overlays to play nice?

You could try disabling the RTSS overlay for Unity and setting the fps limit in Nvidia Inspector instead. My results are usually better with RTSS fps limiting, but give it a go, it's what I'm using for this game.

Unfortunately I tried turning off RTSS limiter and using NI, but whereas the former gives me a rock solid 33.3 frame time, NI is all over the place and causes minor hitches while keeping it "near enough" at 30 to show the limiter is doing its job.

With 1.02 I can now go to the two southeastern most sectors on the map without the game entering "photo mode" where Arno and all of the NPCs freeze in place but you still retain control of the camera. In return, the frequency of hard locks within the game where everything stops, including the sound, has picked up. Now I am getting them multiple times an hour. Hope Ubisoft keeps up the pace with addressing these issues via their patches.

Same, I've been getting the hard look pauses fairly frequently tonight, maybe once every 5-10 mins

Interesting, so my i5 4570/GTX 750Ti/8GB Ram have the chance to play this if I go medium or 720p (which is fine for me)? I was under the impression it needs beefier build to run it at least.

2gb or 4gb 680 ?
Everything on max, really ? Even textures ?

Both of the minimum spec cards (680/HD7970) can run the game at ultra settings just fine. I don't think even a 2GB 680 would have problems with ultra textures at 1080p.

I know personally that I can run the game at ultra everything (FXAA) on a single 7970 at a pretty solid 30fps most of the time. The system requirements Ubisoft gave were bullshit.

I don't know why do we keep expecting anything from ubisoft on pc. I haven't seen a single good port from them on pc(aside from rayman origins and all games with that engine). from what i have seen, all games from the ps3 era(i did not play on pc before) are utterly awful. can anyone tell me otherwise?

Far Cry 3, Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell Blacklist all run perfectly for me. The only games I had problems with were AC4 and Watch Dogs. And Unity runs fine for me too considering it is a new gen open world game. Dragon Age Inquisition, for example, runs fairly similarly based on benchmarks even though it is cross gen and doesn't look as good.

Finally given it a proper go (unlocked midnight here in the UK).

I'm having a remarkably smooth experience. Not just reasonable framerates, but consistent frametimes too. I was expecting a bad experience but I'm getting the opposite, it's actually pretty good. (Patch 1.2)

i7 4770K @ 4.5Ghz
GTX 780 x2 SLI
16GB RAM
GSync

Settings:
1920x1080
Ambien Occlusion: HBAO+
Antialiasing: 2x MSAA
Environment Quality: Ultra High
Shadow Quality: PCSS
Texture Quality: High

My average framerate is somewhere in between 55-70fps, and because of GSync, it's all smooth. But from other people's experiences, I expected much less consistent frametimes, but I'm playing in the Paris, running around the dense crowds, trying to fit as much on screen as possible and it is holding up remarkably well.

It's smoother than Black Flag for me and Unity is doing quite a bit more. I'm actually quite impressed. Surely I'm not the only one having a reasonably good experience?

Yeah, it's not perfect, lots of glitches, the NPC and building detail pop-in is weird, but is just inherent to the design of the game. I haven't had any game crashes though, and I'm running uPlay in offline mode, I haven't actually tried it with uPlay in online mode yet so I don't know if this is making any difference.

Wow, I wish I had a G-Sync monitor. I plan to get one soon. It will be nice to have low latency, lack of screen tearing and lack of stutter all at the same time.

Anyway, no you aren't the only one having a good experience. Quite a lot of people in this thread have said the same thing. I don't get the same high framerates that you do because I am on a single GTX 770 with only 2GB of VRAM, but I am still able to get a stable 30fps with a mix of high and ultra settings.

It definitely runs a lot smoother than AC4 in terms of absolute framerates because it isn't bottlenecked by poor multithreading, but since I cap at 30fps on both of them obviously the end result for me is the same. Although I will say that Unity has much better frame-pacing in terms of the consistency of the frame delivery, so there isn't any of that subtle stutter you get in some games even when you are maintaining a vsynced 30 or 60fps.

Does anyone else get a very annoying "shaking/wobbling effect" when entering the map screen or when entering sub menus from the menu screen? Any solution for this? I have come to terms with 30 fps, pop in and visible seams in the geometry at this point, but the map/menu bugs strike at the core of the collectathon fun you are supposed to have with these games.

Edit: Sadly the bug was solved completely by disabling SLI :(
