Assassin's Creed Unity - PC Performance thread

Come on, if he has a 6Gb Titan he certainly doesn't run it at "high" textures.

So he won't see that.

He would still see the low poly buildings though.

In order from left to right.
High textures + low poly building.
Ultra textures + low poly building.
High textures + partly higher poly building.

I'm also curious about this, so it would be rad if someone with like a 6gb Titan would grab a screen from this. It would be kind of nuts if Ubi was automatically limiting the LOD distance based on VRAM though.

I don't notice building lod problems much, so not sure if it's me or my system. NPC lod, tho? Jeeeeeesus. The pop-in is a huge immersion breaker for me. I seriously can't play like this. I stood on top of a building overlooking a riot and, as I panned the camera left and right, dozens of people's clothing styles/color/detail would pop in and out. Left, popopopop, right, popopopop, repeat. Ugh. Sad thing is, I really enjoy the story, characters, and setting, but the tech problems are killing me. :(

What about CPU usage? Lolz
6,5 GB RAM?

^ Interesting benchmarks there. What are you using for that, out of curiosity?

Use MSI Afterburner (through RivaTuner) to cap frame rate to 30fps.

Thanks for that! Still getting regular dips to the low-20s (even sub-20s during cutscenes) on high settings, but only in areas densely populated with NPCs. Playing the game anyway and having a good time of it.

I OC'd the 7950 a bit to see if it would have any effect; any performance gains are negligible, so I guess the CPU is the main culprit.

i just visited that bridge and theres a problem with the lod even on the highest settings, this engine has always had issues but its pretty crazy at times with this game.

the only other time i remember was near the beginning when you can finally free roam paris, you start on a roof across from notre dame de paris and behind you the buildings look like lego.

FX 6300 @ 4.5 GHz
GTX 770 2GB @ 1250 Mhz

Resolution: 1080p
Adaptive vsync
Environment quality: high
Shadows: low
Textures: high
AA: off
AO: SSAO

The above settings are a compromise between performance and graphics fidelity that I actually notice during gameplay. I average 45 fps running around big crowds and streets. It can dip as low as 30-35 fps in interiors with a lot of details. I get around 55-60 fps on the rooftops.

In 1.2, the game would stutter every 5 seconds but setting the game's priority to normal (default was high) in Task Manager fixed it. The stuttering now seems to be fixed in 1.3; however, the game still crashes occasionally.

1.4 and the supposed performance fixes cannot come soon enough. This is the best AC game I've played and it's a shame these technical issues ruin the experience.

Same settings here. Performance is not bad, better than trying to cap it to 30fps which I just couldnt get used to

Updated. Awful performance and and loads of issues. Was running at 10 FPS in the
prison
at the beginning and glitched through the walls, out of the sandbox when escaping.

Ubisoft has become former EA. This is disgusting. And it's a shame, because I really like the new combat mechanics... But god, it won't even hold steady for more than .5 seconds...

After updating, the game doesn't read my save file anymore while connected to Uplay. Tries to start a new game everytime. Used to be fixed by rebooting, but not anymore.

Playing in offline mode it works just fine. Connect to Uplay, tries to start a new game. Awesome.

Everyone is getting the crazy pop-ins on the npcs right. Like you walk through the crowd and they can completely change their entire outfit in front of your eyes...it has to be a bug, or LOD issue.

The game is inconsistent.

I can load up a save and the fps is around 45 and smooth.

Exit, load same save and its 30 fps and stutters like crazy.

Reload again, and its smooth again.

Same location, same time. Different performance.

LOD is not affected by settings or hardware. It's dependent on distance.

It's possible that you trigger an high poly by moving close, and you still retain it at some distance.

So it's possible that the same spot you see high poly, or low poly. It just depends what state you triggered before getting in the position.

But nope, hardware or settings don't seem to affect LOD in any way.

Yup! I have no idea what's going on with this game. It's very strange. Last night I was finally able to play with crossfire enabled with NO stuttering at all and smooth FPS - this morning, however.....complete stutter/freeze fest again.

Quick follow up on this. If I delete the games config files in the ACU folder inside documents and re-do the settings after that, it seems the performance issues are gone and everything works flawlessly.

I'm using AFR mode for crossfire HD 7970GHz's and getting around 40-45fps with everything ultra except for AA, which I've set to FXAA, at 2720x1700 resolution. Not bad at all! There's no more stuttering or hitching either.

I think I'm just going to lock the FPS to 30 and play through the game once and for all.

Edit:

Did the new patch break FXAA or something?

Nope, CPU is not the culprit. Not by much. Because I have AMD 1055T which is much worse than your CPU and I have R9 280 which is slightly better than your GPU, but I am getting 25-30 fps and drops to 20s just like you. So its just running terribly on AMD cards.

Is SLI broken for this game?

Game stutters and crashes like it's its job with SLI enabled. If I disable it, game runs perfectly smooth and zero crashes

wtzgU.gif

For reasons I struggle to understand ultra textures are now perfectly playable on my 3gb 780. Before, there used to be very noticeable stuttering everytime, so it's really smooth.
I don't remember having changed anything, I restarted the game several times to make sure they were engaged.

I reinstalled my game on a different SSD (Corsair Neutron GTX instead of the Crucial). Maybe that's that.

While I was playing I felt that the clothing physics were a bit stiff and when i googled it I came across a steam discussion that claimed that higher quality cloth physics were tied to the ultra high preset, and so if you have it custom it will use lower simulation no matter what...
I tried changing it and it kinda looks better but i'm afraid it's just placebo effect, can some of you test this out tell me what you think?
I might record it and post a video comparing the two later...

Would I be able to play this on my rig?

I have the following:

i5 3570k
GTX 670
8 GB RAM

I'm hoping that I'll be able to get at least a stable 30fps at 1080p, but those minimum specs definitely scared me away.

Of course. Mix of high and a couple things ultra settings even, FXAA, 30fps will be perfectly attainable for you. The minimum specs were complete crap.

I just started playing this today.

i5 2500k @ 4.5ghz
R9 290 overclocked
8GB ram

It runs at 1080p all ultra settings between 45-60fps most of the time.

The LOD and pop in is disgusting though. I may stop playing because of it. It's unacceptable for building textures to come in and out out of view the way they do when you are climbing.

Just tried it now after doing a clean install of my drivers, it's much better now! Aside from some texture flashing in the sky, it performs a lot better.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Disable the uplay onscreen display to eliminate the flashing in AFR friendly mode.

You might run into the stuttering issue mentioned multiple times in this thread though. I ran it on a 690 with 2GB VRM, and I got a good frame rate, but I could never make the persistent stutters go away. Never had any stuttering on a 970 with 4GB. I'm not sure it's related to VRM, but I thought I'd mention it.

I just tried the game with a 290x. Environment detail and textures set to ultra. Shadows to high, SSAO, and FXAA. Can't really tell the difference between HBAO+ and SSAO though. This is running at 1080p, and my frame rate was in the high 20's low 30's while walking among large crowds in paris. There's a lot of stuttering, and I can safely say that this game is a mess on AMD cards. My 970 performs much better. I'm willing to bet that this game could run at 60 fps with proper optimization and mantle support. The performance, especially for a 290x is rather poor and inexcusable.

Pretty much. The game definately runs sub 30fps on my 290x. Im done with the unless they fix this shit

I played also with a 290x and MSAAx2, at 1200p (with black borders so I suppose it was really 1080p), and I had a much more stable 30-35fps. Only I have problems in the cutscenes, as everyone else.
What cpu?

It's not really a mess on AMD cards, at least not for me. My setup (Crossfire HD7970's) runs the game around 40 - 45 fps, everything ultra settings, except for FXAA and shadows on high, resolution at 2720x1700.

No stuttering, no major dips. CPU is i5 2500K @ 4.6GHz.

I swear all these LOD issues are a bug on the PC version. I played the game on the PS4 and it's nowhere near as bad really. Even the crowds are less awful on PS4.

It's like the environment sliders don't work on PC.

Weirdly enough, I also seem to now be able to run ultra textures stutter-free at a locked 30 FPS with my 780 Ti SLI setup. That's with everything else maxed at 1080p, except for AA at 2x MSAA. Though I haven't had a chance to thoroughly test it yet, performance does seem to have improved for me with the latest patch. Others who had settled for high textures might want to give ultra textures a try.

AMD better be working on a new set of drivers, and it better give up to 50% increased performance! lol

I have a 4790k running at 4.4 Ghz.

That's impressive. For me, at 1080p performance is awful. With everything set to ultra, except for shadows set to high and FXAA my 970 gets me 45-60 fps.

Trying to play with patch 3, but the game suddenly freezes for like 10 seconds and then unfreezes. Its totally random when this happens. At least once per sequence and happened three times during a co-op session. Anyone experiencing this?
