Assassin's Creed Unity - PC Performance thread

FX 6300 @ 4.5 GHz
GTX 770 2GB @ 1250 Mhz

Resolution: 1080p
Adaptive vsync
Environment quality: high
Shadows: low
Textures: high
AA: off
AO: SSAO

The above settings are a compromise between performance and graphics fidelity that I actually notice during gameplay. I average 45 fps running around big crowds and streets. It can dip as low as 30-35 fps in interiors with a lot of details. I get around 55-60 fps on the rooftops.

In 1.2, the game would stutter every 5 seconds but setting the game's priority to normal (default was high) in Task Manager fixed it. The stuttering now seems to be fixed in 1.3; however, the game still crashes occasionally.

1.4 and the supposed performance fixes cannot come soon enough. This is the best AC game I've played and it's a shame these technical issues ruin the experience.

So the above settings were unplayable in the later missions with a lot of interiors. I believe it was a vram issue as turning textures down to low was the only solution. Unfortunately the game looks terrible with low textures.

I'm pretty annoyed that there is no medium texture setting. It's either get a new GPU or enjoy PS2 level graphics

Blocking the game on my firewall seems to have solved my freezing issue. Too bad I can't play coop anymore lol

Fix this shit ubi.

EDIT: Still getting freezes even offline. It feels like im playing an unfinished game.

EDIT 2: Turning off internet from the PC solved the problem. Over 1 hour of gameplay and no freezes.

EDIT 3: Still freezing. God damn you Ubisoft.

Trying to play with patch 3, but the game suddenly freezes for like 10 seconds and then unfreezes. Its totally random when this happens. At least once per sequence and happened three times during a co-op session. Anyone experiencing this?

My PC:
i5 4670
8GB Ram
GTX 970
Win7

Yeah. It's a common problem.

I'm upgrading from an i5 750 to a 4690K. GPU is a GTX 670. Should I expect much of a performance increase? I was getting under 20 FPS at 1920 x 1080 on all settings before - barely any difference between the low and ultra settings, excluding Nvidia's features.

I'm on a gaming laptop with a 2GB GTX 860M and a Core i7-4710HQ.

My settings:
1440x900 (letter-boxed)
vSync On
4x MSAA (through nVidia control panel)
4x AF (through control panel)
All settings at High
SSAO on

I'm getting 30-45 fps...haven't gotten too many drops below 30 other than during rare big graphical transitions, or cutscenes. There seem to be random drops at times. I've only played through the first hour or so. Still need to test more. Are there any tweaks that really help performance wise? If I drop to 720p and maybe lower shadow settings I might be able to hit 60, but I'm fine with getting 35-40 on average.

Also, is it just me or does 1600x900 res not scale at all? It's bizarre, but it's letterboxed despite matching my aspect ratio. 1366x768 doesn't do this.

I'm not sure why you have 4x MSAA, you could set it at 2x, and disable AF too. I don't think AF helps at all in Unity, I don't even think it lets you through NV inspector. Shadow settings won't give you much of a performance improvement (at least that's the case with my setup) going from high to low.

I'm getting 30-45 fps...

This is somewhat good news for me, as I was wondering how well my 870m would handle the game in it's current state...
I think i'd settle on 30 frames if I could get it looking somewhat decent.

So, what's the general consensus on the pop-in? Is it something ubisoft can/will fix? It's the only thing preventing me from playing right now, tbh. It's just so damn bad.

Forget the pop-in, where is the performance patch. My 770 should be cut through this game like butter but im stuck with 30 fps/stuttering and constant freezing. Utter shite.

You should lower texture quality. That can be a cause for stuttering with not enough vram.

Tessellation patch still incoming? Or did ubisoft get me again :(

Good question. Nobody knows so far. My best guess is: not for a long time. Probably because tessellation will be to demanding for single gpu setups, because they have a lot of other stuff to do and they need to work on the next ac game.

The game was developed over many years, the NPC pop-in issues wouldn't have been something that was gone unnoticed. It is the single most noticeable negative graphical aspect in a game that otherwise looks incredible. It cannot possibly be something that can just be fixed easily. I imagine that the engine handles LOD transitions poorly and the issue is exacerbated by performance optimizations that forced them to limit the distance in which NPC were spawning. Maybe they can mitigate the issue somewhat but if it isn't fixed, I doubt it's because the developers just decided, "fuck it". It's one of those things that had to bother a lot of people involved in making the game.

So I haven't played the game in a couple weeks. On my 970 @1420 I was just about getting a fully locked 60fps with everything on High-Very High settings. Decided to flash my 970 with a BIOS to hit 1506 stable. Tried the game and it's hovering between 45 and 60fps. Did the latest patch hurt performance that much? Far Cry 4 and 3DMark both play and score better respectively since the flash. Was hoping that small boost would let me play at a locked 60.

EDIT: I noticed that I have High Quality set for Texture Filtering via NVCP, would changing it down one notch to Quality give me better performance? I seem to remember someone saying that it gave a boost, can't try it out til tonight.

One week has passed and we still don't have an ETA on that magic "performance update" that should have been "implemented" in the game from the launch not as a free DLC 1 month later.

It definitely wasn't that bad at E3, I watched it several times and focused on the crowd and it didn't happen.

And the environment LOD issue is definitely fixable...

They moved much slower to avoid it from being as noticeable and when they did start running the popin started then they slowed down again

I mean, what do you want? A working game or something?!

I played last night, on a fresh install of Win8.1 on a SSD and a GTX 780 and don't get the best performance, but I could lock it at 30 and probably notice little to no hitches, but I gotta have that 60fps, so I settle for the of the niggling issues. I'm surprised that even with their "live blog"(which they haven't updated in week) they have still been so quiet. Hope to hear something soon.

Just tested out the game at my friend's house with his recently built rig.

It contains:
G3258 @ 4.5
8GB RAM
R9 290

Didn't have any frame rate detecting programs on, but it looks pretty smooth. He was using almost everything on high except for shadows and using FXAA. Probably 30 - 40ish fps, taking into consideration we didn't get too far into the game.

Playing this on my laptop with a 680M and it's nearly as bad as I expected. 1080p with everything set on mostly high, and I'm getting around 25-30fps for the most part, with (rather frequent, to be honest) dips to the teens.

Need to lower some of the settings to get better performance but I'm rather enjoying all the gorgeous scenery in this.

Yeah, this is actually sad..

Both ACU and FC4 haven't received Live Updates in almost 2 weeks

Yep, it's amazing how they just don't fucking care. Literally at all. I remember being called out for calling them trash developers.

They're fucking trash developers. Period. End of story. You can't debate this.

I agree, entirely.

They went full retard with 3+1 fucked up releases, you never go full retard, never.

Is your FPS between 40 to 60? I noticed Notre Dame area is where the fps drops. If only Ubisoft can fix that....

They gave up on us, didn't they...

Money from preorders - Check
Money from people who bought/keep buying their false advertised/incomplete/defective software - Check
Annual milking - Check
Live Updates pages that haven't been updated in 2 weeks - Check
Some indian CEO from some goobysoft studios that no one gives a shit about gives the sheep herd a couple free gamum - Check (sheep happy)

Result = Goobysoft Approves !

ACU was released as an Alpha or a Pre-Alpha, I've played Alphas that looked/played and were a lot more stable than this garbage that's not even worth buying with 2 bucks from a black friday humble bundle

FC4 is also largely plagued and falsely advertised ( Hairworks is listed everywhere and it does not exist in-game )

The Screw, I don't think I need to list the issues...

Annnnd they'll keep doing it, because it's profitable, because it still works and it will work a long time from now on.

Although I have had a great experience with FC4, I agree. It's getting out of hand.

They gave up on us, didn't they...

I didnt purchase this game, I got it free with my 980GTX, I did this purposely instead of choosing another game, I wasn't paying for it due to the parity talk + performance issues.

I won't be buying the next Assassins creed (Regardless of its own merit) unless they fix this to acceptable levels. Will also likely bring it up in conversation with my mates too.

They said Patch 4 on PS4 next week should fix most of the issues. You think PC is getting one too? If so, what are the chances that tessellation will be stealth implemented?

I have not even bothered attempting to play the game in the mess it is, i really hope it's clean when i come back from America so i can enjoy it.

Any change with OMEGA drivers?

Massive.

Copy pasting my post from Omega drivers topic:

Playing AC Unity at 1080p, Ultra High Quality, Textures High, Shadows High, SSAO On, Bloom On and FXAA applied, FPS is way better. Never drops below 27-28 and remains mostly above 30, and on rooftops around 40. Game looks great and is finally playable. Earlier FPS used to drop to 15-16 in heavily crowded areas.

R9 280 user here.

That's almost the same performance as with my 290x. I want to finish ACU but the poor performance were a discouragement to continue playing the game. I will play Unity when I get home. I updated to the Omega driver. I'm surprised AMD didn't say anything about better performance for Unity.

I got this game for free from the nvidia promotion, expecting it to run like crap...and surprisingly, I'm getting almost locked 60fps, no hitching or stuttering. Worst drop I have was 50fps in a room with tons of people in it. Settings are all at the highest except for shadows (I'm using High) and FXAA @1080P. Game is downloading the rest of itself in the background (only half is downloaded ATM), yet I'm still getting amazing performance.

Specs:
i5-4690k (stock speed)
MSI GTX 970 OC (stock speed)
8gb cheapest crucial ram.
1TB 7200rpm hdd

Well Jose, I'm assuming you're still playing the prologue and the first part which is in Versailles. Just wait until you get to Paris. That's where the real peformance stress is going to be.

Waa?? How you able to play the game while it is downloading?? o_O
