Assassin's Creed Unity - PC Performance thread

I heard bad things about SLI users so I decided not to patch 1.4 however I downloaded the beta drivers from NVIDIA and it improved my FPS. No more fps drops on Notre Dame and only one spot at Palacio de Justice that has fps drops but not bad.

Rig is 980 GTX SLI and i7 4790K. Windows 8.1

Can you earn achievements offline though?

The patch actually did something good: no more mush textures on distant buildings even on High settings.

Before patch 1.4, only on Very High you got acceptable textures on the long range, now the game is as it should and matches consoles even on "high" textures.

The bad things is that, yes, it stutters slightly as you move around, and I noticed some white lines along some textures on the ground where transitions aren't well done. As if there are gaps. I'm not sure if this is an issue with the patch tho.

So, now both ACU and FC4 have this slight stutter as you go around. I guess it's Ubisoft recognizable touch on their games.

TXAA also works, but do not even think about running it. On a fast 770 I saw fps going down to 15 in a small alley. I've never seen AA murder fps so much, before.

Welp, patch broke the game for me. Hard lock right after the intro.

Intel i7 3770
16GB RAM
GeForce GTX 980

...And Ubi's support site doesn't work in any browsers for me. Can't wait to see what their phone support is like.

Those white "stitching" lines have been there since day one, unfortunately.

4670k at 4.4 and a single 780 here.

The latest patch allows me to run at 1440p and it feels smoother than it did at 1080 pre patch.

When I get time tonight I'll run it with fraps to see what's up.

Msi afterburner overlay also causes the game to crash. Played the game for about a half hour today after installing the "performance and stability" patch and it crashed on me 4 times

Played around with this game maxed on my 3dtv last night, it looks so damn good. Of course the downside is that because of hdmi limitations, I can only do 1080p24 or 720p60. I don't understand why it couldn't be 1080p30, but it was probably just done with movies in mind.

I just can't do 720 for photorealistic games, Nintendo games are fine. The jaggies and shimmering of 720 on a 1080 set are just too much. Of course 24hz is unplayable, but damn was it beautiful just walking around as slowly as possible turning the camera as slowly as possible.

Framerate cut in half an the ground is flickering all over the place.

I'm fucking done with this game until maybe like 5 years down the road.

It's absolutely incredible that they released this patch going "Yeah, this looks good. Release it."

Performance is much better now on my 970.

Can get basically get solid 60fps now on MAX settings (including Soft shadows) with FXAA.

Getting better Ubi!

EDIT: Well fuck. Turns out I had the settings on High....no wonder I was getting 60fps constant.. Ultra now kills my fps once again... sighs.

Quick update: I bought the game on PC (Core i5 3570T, GTX 750 Ti 2GB and 8GB RAM) after all and played until you can free roam for the first time. Up until then and when free-roaming (running on the ground, fighting some guards and running on the rooftops), the framerate managed to stay well above 30fps, usually hovering between 35-45fps. Hardest drop was to 31fps when I synchronized a tower.

I chose 1600x900 and the "middle" preset for the testrun. I reckon the PS4 version uses middle to high settings but I take the smoother experience over a higher graphical fidelity in this case.

Just decided to try out patch 4 tonight. Found out it broke the game on my PC. Crash to desktop at main menu. Way too tired with this game to troubleshoot it right now. Patch 4 really does seem like it was meant to bring the PS4 version up from a beta retail release to a slightly more acceptable quality level with every other platform being an afterthought (an inverse of priorities when the game first launched).

I wonder how Victory will be, technically. On the one hand management would be putting on a lot of pressure to fix the reputational damage. OTOH, it's still gotta come out like clockwork every year.

I'm expecting AC Victory be at least another AC2 or 4 of the series. As in a title that thanks to the reuse of assets is much more polished than the one before it. Hopefully the framerate is as good as in AC4 or better.

Until 1.4 hardware aa actually made the game look worse. Now txaa is amazing but reg msaa still looks crap.
Oi that's unfortunate.

Have you tried deleting the 2 files in the "My Documents\Assassin's Creed Unity" folder so the game creates new ini files? Doing this helped me in WatchDogs when I was getting app crashes.

They seriously messed up SLI even though it was working fine? What in the world is happening with this game and SLI in general.

I'm so regretting getting the GTX 970 in SLI,so I should avoid patch 4 if I want to avoid flickering with SLI right?

My final settings:

  • Resolution: 1600x900 (borderless window upscale to 1080p because 900p doesn;t work in Full Screen, image is little blurry but nothing serious)
  • Environment: Ultra High
  • Textures: High
  • Shadows: Low (i didn't saw difference between Low and High visually but i thing so i choose Low)
  • Ambient Occlusion: HBAO+
  • AA: FXAA

Rock solid 30FPS (i used GPU Tweak for FPS limiting), draw distance is still bad (well it is not bad but LOD steps are bad) and pop in is still noticeable.

i72600K
GTX 760 DC2OC 2GB
8GB DDR3 @ 1600MHZ

I ended up having to install the beta Nvidia drivers to solve the issue. It works now, but I found no actual overall performance increase. The game still has those weird drops to single digits once in a while (probably to do with the internet/Initiates integration) but otherwise my framerate is largely the same as it was prior to the patch. The shimmering texture issue was fixed, but I have no idea if it was due to the patch itself or the Nvidia beta drivers. All in all, I have a suspicion that Patch 4 was primarily focused on bringing the PS4 version up to parity with the Xbox One version as that version probably saw the largest performance gains overall.

It's odd that some people are having issues with SLI - because I'm not (two 780s). I tried the game before and it's great with everything working properly it all looks even better than before. It's a shame I already completed the game, because it's unlikely I'll play it again and experience the game how it was meant to be.

My final settings: Textures at ultra, environment at ultra, FXAA, SSAO, shadows on low.

Using the latest patch and latest AMD drivers (Omega). Consistently above 30FPS, usually around 45FPS. In very dense crowds between 35-40.

Rig:
3570K at stock clocks (cause I'm lazy).
R9 280 with slight overclock to GPU at 1170 and mem at 1375. (This is a 3GB card).
8 GB ram.

I'm pretty pleased that I'm able to now run the game at a playable rate at pretty decent settings. The funny thing is, turning settings down to high doesn't get me significant gains in FPS (and yes, the settings are applying).

All in all, I'm glad to try the game out but I'll never buy another Ubisoft PC game for more than $15.

I gotta ask. For those SLI users who experience lower fps on patch 1.4, are you using Windows 8.1 or 7? Have you guys tried uninstalling the game and reinstall?

Since the beta drivers I'm seeing 60-70 fps at 1080p ultra fxaa and some parts down to 55 on a 970, i7 930

Probably stick to running 2560x1440 ultra locked at 30 half refresh rate though. Must be really lucky not to have a crash or major issue yet. Just got a few side missions to do.

Top marks Ubisoft, just updated, loaded my save game and the main display is black. In other words I can only see the hud!

Guess that's some hours down the drain.

Fucking Ubisoft has broken the game after 1.4.0 update. With AMD Omega drivers, the game was butter smooth and never crashed or froze. Now the FPS is all over the place and game freezes/crashes. WTF. Never buying any Ubisoft game now, not even bothering if they give games for free.

Anyway to revert to 1.3.0?

I'm surprised no one tried to uninstall and reinstall the game to see if it will fix the issue.

So you want me to redownload 40+ GB? Because Uplay is such a shit software that back up and restore isn't even possible.

Does anyone ever get weird 5 sec freezes with the game??

Using latest update and this shit happens way too often..

Yup. Sometimes it even crashes the game. This didn't happen with 1.3.0. Ubisoft is the most incompetent AAA dev out there. I am done with them for good.

Yeah. I know it sounds odd but is there any other way to fix it? It's a pain, I know but instead of waiting for Ubisoft to do anything, might as well give it a shot.

Game seems to run better after the patch for me (fresh install). Well, aside from random 2-second freezes and flashing textures. Pop-in is as bad or worse than I remember, tho

Latest patch has introduced long 5-10 second freezes which sometimes completely crash the game. High five ubi.

Interestingly enough, I just finished 6 hour play session, and while I did have three or four of these 5 second freezes, the game didn't crash a single time for me. 280X and Omega drivers.
And I gotta say, after I upgraded some of my equipment and got the hang of the controls and navigation, the game feels fucking great, including combat. And it looks proper nextgen, I cant believe what I am seeing quite often, playing on 55" plasma. It is much more impressive to me than Uncharted 4 footage, for example.

I agree it looks fantastic. With my 780 I decided to not bother trying to get it 60, I've just set everything to ultra (sans textures which I've dialed down due to only 3gb of cram) and locked it at 30, downsampling 1440 to 1080 and it looks astonishing at times.

But....5-10 freezes are really not acceptable in any way, shape or form. I'm going to wait until they've finished patching it. Last night on a lark I booted up Watch Dogs, another game that was a stuttery mess for me. It seems to now run like butter (well, a smooth, locked 30fps) for me now with zero hitching.

People probaby think I'm crazy for locking a PC game at 30 but I would rather dial up the bling and have a consistent update rather than ride the 40-60 fps roller coaster. Mind you this is if I'm playing with a controller, it has to be 60 with a kb and mouse.

With high textures distant buildings look so bad it's unplayable.

I might be getting AC Unity for Xmas off a friend. I have a 970 and I think I might very well do the same and avoid all the bs of messing with settings for hours/days to try and hit 60Ffps that I will probably never get stable anyway.

Never done it before though. Is there an in game option or do I have to go through Nvidia settings?

I actually just called my friend and asked if she wants to do a present swap today since we'd be doing it tomorrow anyway.
I'd like to get it running properly before Xmas.

I'll give half refresh rate a go first.
