Assassin's Creed Unity - PC Performance thread

Has anyone with near as the same rig as me got any feedback regarding performance on PC?

I have this on the Xbone but the problems are just too annoying for me to want to play it.

Gigabyte 7950
i5 3570k (not overclocked yet not sure if I should)

Yeah the freezes are considerably more frequent now. Some stuttering can be removed by going offline in Uplay, but otherwise it seems to be creeping in and staying compared to older patches.

Here's a video of the freezing problem for anyone who hasn't experienced it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WhIn8nvxpI I love how Unity gets so much hate from glitch memes but (larger) problems like this are a whisper in the dark.

Now I'm not inclined to play the game. The problems are getting too numerous and patches only seem to make them worse. The freezing seemed to go away entirely once I switched shadow settings, but now it's back and my patience is gone.

I feel you man, i finished the game with those freezes and quite frankly it was a nightmare.
I'm never gonna touch the game again i think.

I kept it installed for now just in case the DLC is particularly oustanding, but after that, i'm gonna uninstall it and forget about for good.

But....5-10 freezes are really not acceptable in any way, shape or form. I'm going to wait until they've finished patching it. Last night on a lark I booted up Watch Dogs, another game that was a stuttery mess for me. It seems to now run like butter (well, a smooth, locked 30fps) for me now with zero hitching.

Same for me. Watch dogs is a constant 30fps locked 99% of the time (all ultra except textures high on a 2GB card).

Locked it at 30fps and was fine until it hit very large crowds and I would see some quick stutters. Or even just a drop into the 20s.

So it can stay unplayed until they sort it, if ever. I'm not wasting my time on a game at 30fps that can't even hold that stable.

For some reason I can't get unity to boot with Riva statistics server running so I had to lock with nvidia inspector.

It feels reasonably smooth but not "console 30fps" smooth. Frustrating.

Have they mentioned anything about the SLI flickering?

I was going to pick it up when it was on sale, but since I'm running SLI 980's and the game seems unplayable with SLI, I held off.

I might pick it up again if it goes on sale again, but I'd prefer to know if I could you know, actually play it right away.

Hardocp published their performance and IQ review and needless to say they're not happy :
http://www.hardocp.com/article/2014/12/22/assassins_creed_unity_performance_video_card_review/7#.VJiCZ14LA4

Here's looking forward to the next Assassin's Creed Unity patch. As it is, this game is in no condition for us to be using as a game to evaluate video card performance. Sorry Ubisoft, try again. Surely though, if a game is published by Ubisoft, many PC gamers will not, and should not in our opinion, be pre-purchasing, or even purchasing on launch day.

is there any way to uninstall this patch? I get the 10 second freezes as well on my 970

Didn't ubisoft just say that they value quality testing? what a joke. They have become the WORST publisher around, and EA look like angels in comparison. (and they give some good performance on their games... )

Not ultra textures (close) and ultra LOD.
No tessellation either.

The PC version doesn't have tessellation either, it's gonna be released on a future patch.

Unity was the tech demo I booted up when I felt like showing off my PC's muscle ever since release day, but the recent patch is giving my SLI 970 setup that accursed flickering; ruined everything. :/ What gives Ubisoft?

should ultra quality textures work properly on a 280x (3gb) @ 1080p + FXAA? I'm getting a bit of stuttering with ultra textures, while high is mostly smooth.

Ok. I updated to 1.4 and my fps improved (Vsync constant 60fps). No more drops in Palace and Notre Dame. Super smooth fps. One problem is constant flickering. I heard loading sequence 4 with the rain weather fixes that issue but I have not been there yet. The only flickering I get is water puddle and river. Some small posters on the ground as well. Performance is great. Rig is'

Is anyone running this on a GTX 670 ? What kind of settings are you using for say even a stable 30fps ? I've not bought it yet (waiting to see how Ubisoft do with the patches) but was wondering what kind of settings folks are using with that card. I get the feeling I won't be getting 60fps on that card anyway! :P

So I'm seriously considering picking this up,

I've got the following specs:
3770KL @ 4ghz
7970 Ghz
16Gb ram

Anyone been running on similar hardware? How have you found the game performs? I'd be running at 1080p just.

Played it again today (mainly because they've unlocked the golden Initiates chests for everyone for a few days until they fix ACI website) and it runs very smooth now. Not comparable with the laggy mess it was pre AMD Omega and Patch 4.

My rig: i7 920, HD7950 3gig, 6gig RAM.

Wow. That is one damning article. They're calling for a straight up recall, and after a month a four patches and still persistent major problems with the game I can't say I disagree.

It's this generation's Tresspasser.

Oh please hard ocp interpretation of poor performance is any game that doesn't run max settings at 1440p

Thanks to super generous gaffer Gruso, who gave away the code that came with his new video card, I got a copy of this and downloaded it overnight.

Now, I'm sure I wouldn't be saying this if I was playing pre-patches and pre-AMD Omega drivers, but I'm pretty impressed with how the game is running on my system considering it doesn't really meet minimum specifications. (i7 920@3.8ghz HT OFF, HD5870 Crossfire, 12GB Ram)

I'm not running this at 1080p, simply because no matter what I did it couldn't maintain above 26fps, so I've got it turned down to 720p. I'm running it off my TV anyway, so it still looks good at 720p.

Enviroment Quality = High
Shadows = Low
Texture Quality = High
SSAO

With those settings, I'm managing an almost perfectly stable 30fps. I'll get the occassional quick dip to 25fps or so when I'm running around Paris proper, and the only time I've seen a real sustained drop to the low 20s is when I'm syncing viewpoints and it zooms out and spins around the city.

Perfectly playable to me at the moment, and still looks good.

-Edit-

A little farther into the game, and it drops down to 24-25 whenever theres a shit load of NPCs on screen. Whatever, still playable to me right now.

Enjoy pahamrick, that's basically console performance. I'm sure if you lowered environment quality you would see a pretty big boost in fps. Might not be worth the drop in IQ though.

I turned everything down to low as a test, and maybe gained 2 FPS in an area where it dropped the lowest (22fps in a super crowded NPC spot with a ton of them). 22 to 24, which was interesting.

I might mess around with it a bit more later, or see if lowering the overclock and re-enabling HT does anything.

I've been testing around with the patch 4 and it did increase my performance in the troubled areas like Notre Dame, inside Palais et Jardin du Luxembourg and many others. Before my frames would drop to the low 30's but now the minimum I see anywhere is pretty much in the low 50's. This on a single GTX 970 with the latest drivers. In settings I have environment on "very high", not using "PCSS" and aa off because I'm using ReShade+SweetFX2.0 with FXAA and SMAA combined. Everything else on max.

I like to think I've a high tolerance for poor performance but man this game is pissing me off.

After 2 days of constant crashing and freezing, I've gotten to the (unfuckingskippable) cutscene where Bishop introduces herself and it locks up at some installation screen. I don't think I've ever had this kind of trouble with a PC game.

I'm stuck on a Sequence 7 fight against
Bellec
The game crashes as soon as the fight starts, and I don't know what to do to get past it.

From what I understand that was a really common occurrence. I didn't have it but when looking for solutions to other problems I saw a TON of threads about it on the Ubi forums. Might find a solution there.

Thank you, I'll start digging.

-EDIT-

Turning everything to low and off let me get through the mission without issue. If anyone else is having the game crash at that area, might want to try that.

Whelp, looks like I'm done with Unity for awhile. The part right after Sequence 7 Memory 3, the server bridge in
1944 Occupied France, when you need to climb the Eiffel Tower, I get to a part where a plane does a drive by and a piece of the tower starts to fall

And CRASH, every time. Tried everything I've found that was suggested online, and nothing. Still crashes at that spot each and every time.

While it's true that Unity is not the most optimized PC version in existence I find their conclusion a bit premature. They have high standards and that's a good thing I suppose but they don't seem to understand the underlying tech of Unity and therefore can't grasp why the game is so taxing.
From the article, last page :
On the whole, it is a decent looking game, but it doesn't really scream "Next Gen" to us
I wonder what does then, they must have not played the game enough.

It's this generation's Tresspasser.
Tresspasser was hardly a game, Unity is. That's already a significant difference right there.

Mother of god, Patch 4 destroyed the game. Now it won't even start probably, it crashes always to the desktop and if it don't, the loading screen is infinite even though its on a SSD. What a mess. With version 1.03 atleast I could play, lol.

I've noticed loading times are longer as well, on the SSD the game is installed (Crucial MX100) it takes a good 25s to load.

That...makes no sense at all (srysl Ubi?), but thanks for reporting. I waited a couple of minutes, but the game just won't loading. I checked CPU and SSD usage, they were both very low. Never had that problem with the previous version. I also tried to redownload the game, but I have the same error. Guess my game is broken...

If I remember (I may be confusing with someone else..) you are playing on a laptop right ? Keep in mind they're not officially supported by Ubisoft.
So abnormal problems are to be expected in your case.

Yeah, that's true, but the thing is I never had that problem with version 1.03 and if I remember correctly, there are some desktop users here with that problem too. Ubisoft is really strange this year, sadly they were one of my favorited third partys last year

Huh, I have the game on an old samsung non-ssd and loading takes 35 seconds. I would think with SSD that should be cut in half at most.

I don't have precise figures but before the latest update loading times were noticeably shorter. In most games SSD can reduce loading times up to two times from my experience but in the case of Unity the different isn't perhaps as drastic.

Thought I posted about this, but I fixed this crash and the fix was kind of silly. After trying countless things to get past it including uninstalling and installing my gpu drivers, uplay in offline mode, verifying files, ect -- in an act of desperation I changed the outfit I had on. Was using Edward Kenway's outfit, and changed back to the standard look. Got past that part no problems.

Restarted mission with Kenway's outfit, and sure enough crash. Such an odd issue.

Just finished installing this and nvidia experience is reccomending my settings to be 1360x768 and everything on low, I'm running a single 780...I knew the game had performance problems but jesus....

I've since 30 locked but im not sure what the ideal settings really are when 60 fps isnt the target.

I have no idea why you're even believing Geforce Experience. A 780 can run the game at maximum settings with FXAA easily. I was getting 40-60fps, average I don't remember.

The game is also very CPU hungry :

Black Flag run fine on my system, but this is absolutely unplayable. *sadface*

This is what I've got ATM - what should I throw my money at?

CPU: Intel Core i5 4670K
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z87-HD3
RAM: 8GB DDR3 1333mhz (1x8GB)
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB

I'm the kind of guy who spends way too much time tinkering with the settings and testing performance, and I usually end up not feeling like playing yhe the game afterwards so most of the time I just do whatever experience says to do to save time. It's worked pretty well until now. Thanks for the tip though, i hadnt tried fxaa yet.
