Assetto Corsa -- New racing sim from the developer of netKar Pro

AC looks leaps and beyond better. Unrealistic 3D trees are worse than realistic 2D cardboards. pCARS lightning seems to be vastly inferior

Of course it does, it is the best looking racer ever seen on PC.

I was just making a joke, because "cardboard trees" are something about 456789384 threads have been created on various forums as the last line of "defense" regarding "b-b-b-ut my game is better then yours" foundations.

I have nothing against 2D trees as long as they look good while driving. Better spend those precious resources elsewhere then doing 3D foliage and such.

Exactly. Because of the early state of pCARS it's really easy to take "ok to bad" screenshots. You need to choose the right track and the right conditions to get a great screenshot. SMS decided to open everything to the community so you will get all range of screenshots quality. If they decided to only release PR shots like other devs do you would get much better shots.

Like I said previously, AC looks great and is among the top titles but I still think pCARS can produce better stuff with the right conditions. I'm not gonna post pCARS screenshots here but just look through the High Res Screenshot thread and you will see mind blowing stuff.

Aaaaaannyywaayy. In the end, I think it's a moot argument. Both games have great graphics and WAY MORE than needed to be enjoyable. In the end the physics and the amount of content will be the more important factors.

Which is why I have high hopes for this title. I truly believe it can take the crown of best driving physics (if "even better than P&G 3.0" is to be believed). Couple that with an open environment for add-ons and its just seems like leader in the clubhouse for the sim world.

Great starting point for version 1.0!

I'm sure between Kunos releasing DLC and various modding teams already committing to Assetto Corsa we'll have enough quality content in a short space of time after Assetto Corsa releases.

^That is a decent list. I hope they get around to making more tracks though.

Yeah I agree. I mean... I understand why it's like that but personnally it always bums me that the focus is always on cars and not on tracks. I know that, in essence, those are car games and that it takes a lot more time/ressources to make a track compared to a car but to some extent I never really cared for the car list in a sim game. As long as it's big enough to offer some variety then it's good enough for me.

Tracks on the other hand are what actually makes the gameplay and the variety in the track list is what will make or break a game for me.

You can give me all the cars in the world, I'll probably still end up using 10-15 MAX. Give me only 5-10 tracks (or layouts) and I will get bored to death within hours.

Like TJP said, AC is opened to mods however so I'm sure we will get a ton of tracks.

I agree 100% Megasoum - I'll happily take tracks over cars anyday. Sadly it is car numbers that developers and fanboys seem to get excited over and are the basis for game vs game pissing contests. Give me a multitude of tracks and a focused selection of cars which have been as accurately recreated as humanly possible with sublime physics and FFB. This is possible in sims such as nKP and GSC 2012; I currently have over 50 tracks for GSC 2012 (most are conversions from other gMotor games that I won) and 6 vehicles with sublime physics and FFB.

If the mods for AC are of a high quality, any short comings in track number should be filled rather quickly. If rFactor is any guide, the sim racing community will sort the great mods from the shite rather quickly.

Speaking of tracks...latest shots of Circuito del Mugello:

I don't car how Assetto Corsa looks vs all the other sims, I just want to try it for myself and Kunos's sensational FFB and physics.

Game is looking fantastic. Day one purchase for me.

I would like to get your personal opinions on what the chances are of AC getting the following tracks(which I discovered in GPL):

A)Dundrod
B)Isle of Man TT
C)Targa Florio
D)Machwerk
E)Jops Siffert
F)Rouen Le Essart
G)Urbanya
H)Tokyo Route 246

....?

Eh... Extremely low for any of them

Targo Florio is available for rfactor/GTR2. I'm sure some of the mod teams will transfer their work over to AC if it becomes a major platform. Of course, don't expect the visuals of the included laser scanned tracks.

Off-topic, but I assume you have Power and Glory 3 for GTR 2 (available on Steam for 3.60 right now). It's absolutely magnificent. And the guy who did the physics has been hired to work on the physics for AC. If you love old cars/tracks, it's the best out there IMO. Things like Targo Florio are also available to download:

Posted this in the sim thread, but Leipziger Stadtparkrennen is a recent release and it's a 50s track that's all kinds of old-school awesome:

It depends on which modding teams decide to create tracks (and cars) for AC and the ease of using the inbuilt creations tools supplied by Kunos.

The one issue I have and I've not seen the answer anywhere is the damage modelling. FVA had none and nKP had very basic car damage; does anyone know if Kunos have extensive damage modelling to AC?

Yeah, I plan on check this out indeed. Played GTL to death and loved a few years ago. Is it possible to play Power and Glory online in multiplayer? If so, is there a server browser or something?

Oh, thanx Riba!

I have it in collection, brand new and sealed, bought the very last CD from Zavvi 6 months ago, GPL and RBR for 6 pounds. Now I only have to finally allocate the funds and build the rig..

Amar....dude....once you get a proper PC rig you will forget all about the GT series will want to invest your time in PC racing sims. Your PS3 racing days are numbered my friend :D

ehmm.. calm down, it's going to take weeks before it's ready for release :P

Oh great, just as Im starting military service and won't have any time to play for at least the next 6 months :)

On a serious note though, the game is simply looking better and better even if I'm still slightly bummed that the pit-stops won't make it for the first release, but my hype levels are only going up.

Its about hitting the perfect car/track for any one user. Not everyone has the same taste - while I'd be happy with an Exige around Thruxton, others might want a corvette around Laguna Seca. Without a wide selection you'll just alienate people.

Personally I don't need a large variety of tracks - one track has almost infinite replayability if its a good one. But it is very subjective.

the cardboard trees in LittleBigPlanet Karting look great :P

Little concerned with how badly that AI car smashed him off the track at 1:20.

Otherwise, the graphics look amazing as always.

That footage looks like its from last year's Gamescom so improvements are definitily being made regarding AI.

*at least i hope so :)

Hello there!
Finally, the work on version 1.0.0 of the Assetto Corsa Technology Preview is in progress. Therefore, soon, we'll see how the Assetto Corsa engine and GUI run on thousands of PCs. As the current development build seems to be stable and smooth on different configurations in beta testing, we are cautiously optimistic. The Assetto Corsa engine already runs all day long on dozens of professional simulators all around the world without issues; but gamers are a special breed, you know.

In the absence of any serious issues, we may be able to close off a public build within a short time period. And soon we will be in a position to also announce the minimum hardware requirements you will need to run Assetto Corsa.

We thank you all for your patience, we know you are looking forward to trying this build on your own PCs, but you cannot believe how many small details need to be addressed when releasing a build featuring only one car and one track.

Anyway, we would like to thank you profusely for your patience. We have a little surprise for you all: Following your suggestions, instead of using the 500 Abarth, that will be added in a future demo car list, a guest-star car will be included in this Tech Preview. We are confident that you will appreciate it; the car manufacturers in question have already sent us their approval to include it in this upcoming benchmark. It is a perfect match for the Magione racing circuit, a lightweight sportscar perfectly suited to the Autodromo Dell’Umbria’s switchbacks. We aim to offer you an enjoyable challenge, even if the Tech Preview is just a benchmark, and is not to be considered a full demo of the Assetto Corsa racing game.

Probably Lotus Elise :)

Also they will support this game with free updates (weather, cars, etc) for years it seems

Although i think they said that before, its great to here conformation from them :)

And looking at nKp which had great support for a long time I have no doubts in Kunos..

I'm a huge fan of Kunos, liked Namie, loved nKpro & looking forward to AC, but lets get real here for a brief moment. The guy completely disappeared and left nKpro alone for, what was it 2 years and without the likes of Jaap W. (and few others in the community at RSC) the game would have died pretty quickly.

Did you ever read the interview he did with enthuisast website ravsim? There is another article where he discussing matters even further however I'll summarise both articles from memory:

Kunos Simulations was a one man operation when netKar Pro ships. Not long after nKP is released, the demo is cracked and people are playing his tiny indie game for free and without a thought towards the developer who is relying on sales for income. Stefano naturally loses interest and ends up in going AWOL; during this time Stefano thinks about what he'll do next and whether to continue making sims.

I can see why he up and left nKP for 2 years; it wasn't a great business decision but if I had been in the same situation I'd likely say 'fuck it' too. This is why Assetto Corsa will be free of DRM because as Kunos has found fighting morons like Skidrow who've not only fucked up nKP but other sims such as Race 07/GTR is a waste of time and resources but also why Assetto Corsa will be Kunos's last simulation if heavily pirated. FFS, there was an attempt to crack the online only Ferrari Virtual Academy!

I think a log-in system like RaceRoom, CARS, iRacing and Simraceway are an excellent way to help combat piracy even if you don't participate in online races.

I was there, bought nkPro that day it came out, Beta tested for some times too. While i agree on his motivations i've always thought that piracy or not he had customers and he should have supported them more.

I agree.

Based on what I've read in the interviews, in hindsight Stefano would have done a lot more however the piracy resulted in a man who was crestfallen. Nowadays he'd handle things very differently.

You have to be a real douche bag to pirate these things. Also really stupid. These are small operations. If they can't make a living on it, they're just going to move to something else for work. It's not like CoD 15 where plenty of gamers can pick up your lazy ass' slack. Factor in I'm sure the majority had a bunch of money sitting in racing gear and it's absolutely shameful.

Read John's piece when it was released and sorry, but that piracy story is just a cheap cop out, that does not even become to describe the situation at the time at all.

Like -Amon-, I was an active member at RSC and have been testing/driving Kunos his sims from the day NetKar Namie was introduced at RSC. NKpro, which is not strange for a single mans coding job, was full of and for a lot of people, show stopping bugs. Kunos was not able to address those quickly enough or in some cases able to fix them at all. The result was that the mood at RSC became more and more aggressive with more and more time passing by, up to a point were Kunos just disappeared, no message, just leaving all the people with problems behind in the cold.

If it wasn't for Jaap Wagenvoort's dedication, patience, work and him more or less in the end becoming the spokes person for Kunos, we might not have seen Kunos back at all.

He gets my support for AC, but when I see people talk about great support and no doubts, I can only guess they weren't around at the time nKpro released and the years after it.
