Assetto Corsa -- New racing sim from the developer of netKar Pro

Looks good, do we have any idea when it will be released?

In the latest interview posted, they're targeting March. Seems some has to do with the surprise they've got lined up (Ferrari announcement?), and some is just the usual. IE polishing needed, small team, etc.

It's not about arcade/sim, it's about making players even more unaware of the situations around them will racing. People will not learn the track this way, instead they will rely solely on the racing line.

Agreed, I feel the whole racing line feature is really counterproductive. You'll learn a lot more (goes for both the car and the track) from starting slow on a new track and slowly trying to go faster and faster through the corners.

Relying on a set line on a track makes you bad at racing the same way relying on a gps system makes you bad at getting to places without one.

Yeah. That's the worst thing you can possibly do. When I started getting back into racers, I was enabling that and it was terrible. You can race a hundred laps and still have no awareness of the track. And for added insult, they don't even tend to be that good for optimal attack lines.

Each time this thread gets bumped I hope that it's about the demo that they want to release this year. Maybe they'll give us a Christmas present...

They may have a limited car roster, but they sure are making their choices count.
Indeed Kunos are making great choices and I'd rather have a smaller roster of cars that handle as well as Kunos can replicate versus a million cars that handle nothing like the real thing.

That's a hard car to drive, you have to stay on the gas and keep the revs high to keep the huge turbo spooled. If you let the rev's drop it's like nothing happens when you press the throttle.

First of all all, we would like to apologise for the lack of updates and news related to the release of Assetto Corsa. We have been working very hard on the Assetto Corsa project and before we make any more announcements we have had to wait until everything is in place. Now, at last, we can share some important information with you, our fans.

Almost a year ago, on December the 23rd, 2011, we announced that we are developing a new PC racing simulation, “Assetto Corsa”. Our aim was to be able to release the game one year later, during 2012’s holiday season.

We will not reach this goal. Assetto Corsa has been delayed and the release is now expected within 1st quarter 2013, as some of you may already know. The “Assetto Corsa technology preview”, a graphics benchmark, expected to be released in 2012, has been delayed too.

We know a lot of people are keenly waiting for the release of Assetto Corsa, and we wish to thank them for the support they have given us since we announced our most ambitious project.

If you are an experienced gamer you will already be aware that these kind of delays can happen, and will know as well that reasons for such delays can be boring. But, trust us, this is not the case, because the reasons behind our decision to delay Assetto Corsa for a few weeks are the best possible.

We just ask you to remember that what you have seen, what we are able to show you, is just the tip of the iceberg. It is not possible for us to help you understand the amount of work we have put in, as well as the many situations that can determine some of our choices.

Anyway, on December, 21st 2012, at 21.00, European time, please connect to www.assettocorsa.net, or www.facebook.com/assetto.corsa , or https://twitter.com/AC_assettocorsa or Assetto Corsa Google plus and prepare yourself for the most unexpected ending we are able to give you…

^ Expecting Ferrari :)

finally something on PC that rivals GT5 in therm of graphic.
Pity GT 5 doesn't look half as good in motion as it does in photo mode ;) Perhaps the PlayStation 4 will allow for PC level graphics whilst playing in-game. FWIW, both Assetto Corsa and Project Cars will step up the graphical presentation to match the potential of their physics code.

Official confirmation from Kunos: http://www.assettocorsa.net/?p=2674

aside from better IQ it looks like that when you are playing.

AC needs a little bit more work for their Global Illumination and work to include 32fp HDR because 32fp HDR is what made GT5 looking absolutely amazing.

Doesn't look like it to me but I'm not going to shit up this thread with a game vs game contest.

Assetto Corsa looks fantastic, will have outstanding physics based on Kunos's prior work, is moddable and now has Ferrari and Lotus licences to go along with BMW. I'm one very happy sim racing fanatic.

For a 4/5 man team and a single guy doing the coding it looks good enough for me. ;)

Glad it is the Ferrari license and track(s) and not the Nords what so many others (on other forums) wanted as I really like the FVA content. Only minor disappointment seems to be the sound, looks like they didn't improve it a lot from the Gamescom build :(.

You should check the High-Res Screenshot thread for shots of pCARS.

Assetto looks great and I can't wait to play it but as far as visuals goes I've seen stuff a lot more impressive coming from pCARS.

True but tweaking the game to look like that especially given its unfinished state is no easy task. I'm eagerly awaiting pCARS but it still feels a long ways off from being a polished experience. I hope AC is closer to completion then pCARS

Personally, I could care less about the graphics. They're beyond good enough in my book (same applies to some of the other sims).

Better graphics = bigger teams. Bigger teams = bigger budget. Bigger budget = the need to appeal to a much bigger audience before breaking even. Not needing to appeal to a mainstream audience is why I love the PC sims that I do.

Very well said! AC and pCARS look fantastic and both are at a graphical level usually found only in non-realistic racing games on the PC (e.g. recent NFS games, Driver:SF etc). Based on prior games the physics and FFB in AC should be incredible; for me these are the most important aspects for any racing simulation to get right.

To come back to my previous post, still some hope left ;)

Good day of work yesterday with @Luca_Sodano , strong step forward on the audio engine side and oh.. he brought real mozzarella so pure win

there was no doubt in my mind that this will be top of the hill in the sim world and that video certainly hasn't changed anything. great vid and happy to see ferrari in there, the only thing i don't like is the shadowing

physics wise i would say netkar pro and game stockcar are on a par with each other as the current pinnacle, iracing with the new steering on the mclaren isn't very far behind at all though. I do think that assetto will beat everyone in this department, I'd like to see them really concentrate on the multiplayer though, when it comes down to it iracing completely destroys the competition in this respect.

Nice, I wasn't aware that Mugello's included. I hope that they'll include the short configuration too; I like it for powersliding and that part of physics is where AC seems to be stronger than the competition.

The graphics still have a bit of weird colors to me, but certainly nothing that a bit of tonemapping and tuning before the release can't fix.

This is how pCARS looks on the same spot and almost the same angle* :)

AC looks leaps and beyond better. Unrealistic 3D trees are worse than realistic 2D cardboards. pCARS lightning seems to be vastly inferior

AC also has actual grass. If we're gonna dock for "cardboard trees", it's only fair to dock Cars for "cement" grass;)

That will come later, dirt, curbs, "imperfections" on asphalt itself, detailing around track will come later in the development, closer to release..

Exactly. Because of the early state of pCARS it's really easy to take "ok to bad" screenshots. You need to choose the right track and the right conditions to get a great screenshot. SMS decided to open everything to the community so you will get all range of screenshots quality. If they decided to only release PR shots like other devs do you would get much better shots.

Like I said previously, AC looks great and is among the top titles but I still think pCARS can produce better stuff with the right conditions. I'm not gonna post pCARS screenshots here but just look through the High Res Screenshot thread and you will see mind blowing stuff.

Aaaaaannyywaayy. In the end, I think it's a moot argument. Both games have great graphics and WAY MORE than needed to be enjoyable. In the end the physics and the amount of content will be the more important factors.
