Astro bot is the best game of this generation.

Is it really, though?

Or are we that starved for quality content, this generation, that Astrobot has become a GOTG contender and de facto Sony mascot?

Who knows, but I'll find out on Wednesday when my copy arrives.

My son and I will be playing this weekend.

Honestly it looks like a basic platformer. This video made me remember of those old Ice Age games.
There is nothing basic about the game, it exceeds at everything it does. Gameplay, level design, Sound, music and graphics are all top notch, those plus the best use of the dualsense capabilities since (sadly) the launch Astro Bot Playroom game.

Not to mention special stages based one of playstation games...

I just play one of the stage that was based one this game....

If you played the game you can't say this game is just "basic" playtformer......you would absolutely wrong.

It is a really good game. It's not even Playstation GOTY in my opinion, let alone game of the generation. I'd rank FF Rebirth and Stellar Blade above it.

I ask in all sincerity. Is there any mechanical complexity to the platforming? I see people gushing over the game, and I just have to conclude i'm missing something big. The original Astro Bot was really cool, but boiled down to a pressing X to jump and holding to hover to the next "platform". It did utilize 6DoF stage design really well, but this entry can't take advantage of such design. Does this game build upon the basic movement mechanics and deliver satisfying gameplay? I guess in other words, does it rip off Mario at all?

I say it every time in Astro threads. This IP is a prime example of how brain dead Sony currently is.

Yes, the IP is treated with respect and clearly Sony knows it's important considering that Playroom is a pack-in title but Astro has been around since 2013. It took 11 years for Astro to get a fully fledged game. Sony needs to run with it. Don't spam it to the point of diluting its charm but good grief, utilize this thing because people can't help but fall in love with that little dude and all his buddies. It's so freaking inoffensive and so easy to just appreciate and have fun with.

Lego Horizon is gonna look like a bag of smashed assholes in comparison to this. Imagine being a kid at Christmas, all you want is Astro and your Aunt who doesn't know any better gets you freaking Lego Horizon. I cry rivers for those poor kids. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

It’s certainly among the best of the generation. And a breath of fresh air right now as the industry seems lost at the moment

First of all, Astro itself has only been around since 2016, but I don't get your point? The Playroom was NOTHING like Astro Bot currently is, it took the team until The Playroom VR in 2016 to finally experiment with 3D platformers, and then they were allowed to make a full game on PSVR (Rescue Mission) thanks to popular demand from a (very niche!) community.
Nothing about this proves that Sony is braindead, and if anything, it shows great confidence that they allowed their litle tech demo team to grow into what they currently are.
Lego Horizon is gonna look like a bag of smashed assholes in comparison to this.
It's obviously not going to review as well as Astro Bot did, lol, but that doesn't mean it doesn't deserve to exist.
This dismissive attitude against a small studio's (Gobo) first game is kinda weird considering that Doucet's team weren't exactly making bangers from the beginning.

Series S shits down the neck of PS4/5 with enhanced PS3/360 era greatness.

Seeing this generic slop hit 90s while Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time was stuck in the 70s is something...

A gimped cinematic action game and generic reference-filled platformer are not the cream of the crop Sony faithful seem to think they are. A cinematic FPS based on a decades old film IP is also unlikely to be the best to come out this year.

Not even GOTY material in one of the weakest years this generation.

It's undeniably one of the best of this generation (my overall GOTG is still Elden Ring), I just posted this in the OT:

What a ride:

lphiiBO.jpeg

I have so much to say and not exactly sure where to begin. Let's try this: after finishing Shadow of the Erdtree I said nothing is touching it as my GOTY. Removing SOTE from the conversation (since it's DLC after all) I said repeatedly nothing is touching FFVII Rebirth as my GOTY. I've bought and completed a lot of games this year, I feel it's important to quantify one's statements:

Prince of Persia (plat trophy)
Tekken 8
Infinite Wealth
Helldivers 2
Rebirth
Unicorn Overlord (plat trophy)
Rise of the Ronin (plat trophy, underrated)
Stellar Blade
Animal Well
Hi-Fi Rush
Have A Nice Death
Dragon's Dogma 2
Darkest Dungeon 2
Kunitsu-Gami
System Shock
Wukong (plat trophy)

Astrobot is now my GOTY and I can definitely say *nothing* is touching it.

Astrobot is the distillation of pure joy, a whimsical adventure that taps deep into a well of nostalgia and happiness. This is a game that put a smile on my face from the very start and didn't relent until the credits started rolling. It's a game that's masterfully paced and balanced, wisely opting to have it's levels on the easier side, nothing in it's main path tedious or invoking frustration. Welcome to the Garden of Astro Delights, don't think too hard, listen, *feel*.

And boy will you feel it, the DualSense once again showcasing why it's the most next-gen thing about this generation. Every bump, whir, crash and electrical buzz a tactile experience taking what is already a god-tier game into another realm entirely. Combine that with some of the most gorgeous visuals this side of heaven and an OST that is a shoo-in for soundtrack of the year and you get a package that delivers it *all*.

Sights and sounds would mean nothing without the gameplay to back it up, Astrobot delivers in *spades*. Does it borrow from the likes of Mario? Absolutely! Some of these ideas are familiar, I've seen them before in both 3D and 2D platformers so it's not really a question of *what* Astro does but *how* it does it. Art should inspire art, I couldn't care less about who did it first or where a game borrows from, my only concern: is it GOOD?

Astrobot is *exceptional* and it very much has an identity all of it's own. There are so many standouts but these are a few of my favourites: Downsize Surprise, Trunk of Funk, Apes On The Loose, Slo Mo Casino, Bathhouse Battle, Free Big Brother, Dude Raiding, Balloon Breeze, Luna Sola, Turtles in Trash. It's also the best controlling/feeling 3D platformer since SM64 and if we want to compare to Nintendo's latest Mario it nukes Odyssey from up on high (as much as I enjoyed that entry it's no contest).

Perhaps more than anything else, Astrobot is a love letter to all things PlayStation. As a diehard, OG PlayStation fan this game is nothing short of a dream come true, a journey tinged with sunny nostalgia, a whimsical walk down memory lane. Countless characters emerge from the PlayStation's vast library, I couldn't *believe* some these throwbacks and I could count on one hand the ones I was fuzzy on/unfamiliar with, these are some of my faves:

Alundra, Kain, Raziel, Klonoa, all MGS stuff, Tokyo Jungle, all Resident Evil stuff, Polygon Man (wild!), Alucard, Ape Escape (give Asobi the IP!), Patapon, Demon's Souls, BB of course, Tearaway, Sackboy, Puppeteer (remaster and sequel please!), Teddy, Arthur, my boy Kaz (animation is so good!), Onimusha, Pyramid Head, Killzone, Jak .

Yet crucially, this is a game *anyone* can pick up, play and fall in love with even with ZERO familiarity with PlayStation and it's venerable legacy. On Sunday I was watching a movie with my wife (a TOTAL non-gamer), she fell asleep, Astrobot time! She wakes up 2 hours later, is staring at the screen in amazement, "なにこれ!?" (what is this!?). I tell her I'll finish the level and we can resume the movie, she says no, keep playing, she wants to see more, the whole time she's commenting "the people who made this are amazing", "woooooooow", "how did they think of that!?" and so on and so on but it gets even better!

She comes home after work yesterday, I'm chilling playing Hotline Miami 2 (what a contrast! 😂), she says "what about the game from yesterday??" I tell her I 100% cleared it, she literally looks sad! I tell her to come over, I'll show her a couple of my favourite levels, she has a huge smile on her face, this is the power and charm of Astrobot! I imagine there are many stories like this because more than being a homage to all things PlayStation Astrobot is an encapsulation to all things that make this thing called videogames special, it should be celebrated no matter what platform you prefer to game on.

If you've read up until this point I thank you, I tend to go long and deep (heh heh) when it comes to games I'm passionate about. I could go on (and WILL add some thoughts to a follow-up post lol) but I'll leave it at this: Astrobot is my GOTY, it's one of the best games of the generation, it's one of the best games PlayStation ever produced, it's in the conversation for best 3D platformer of all-time. Let us hope Asobi is given whatever they need to make whatever they want, sequel or otherwise, I can't wait to see what's on the horizon, the future is bright!

No matter how many people say GOTY, GOTG etc you will have people trying to downplay it because:

A: they can't accept PlayStation could produce a platformer as good as or possibly even better than (gasp!) Nintendo.

B: their plastic box has had nothing noteworthy in literal years and instead of joining the party they choose to seethe and be cynical lmao

For the rest of us who actually love games let's enjoy the moment, it's something special.

The fact this was supposed to be Sony's weak year for the PS5 so far and we started with a perfect remastered version of TLOU2, Granblue Fantasy: Relink as a console exclusive, the surprise hit Helldivers 2, the highest reviewed game of the year until last week with FFVII Rebirth, Stellar Blade, the first console videogame of that studio and it couldn't have gone much better, Rise of the Ronin, Black Myth: Wukong as a console exclusive because of Xbox's incompetence, Destiny's latest expansion was critically acclaimed after the previous one was dragged, we got Astrobot (now the highest rated game of the year), we still have to be released: Lego Horizon, Silent Hill 2 as a console exclusive, same for Until Dawn Remake.

Say what you want about the lack of showcases, but they are delivering games in every front. Either internal studios, partnerships, 3rd party console exclusives, etc...

The only flop from them was Concord and Rise of the Ronin was sort of mediocre. Everything else has been a win.

Astro bot was always going to be great but i wasn't expecting to be THIS great and well received.

I also don't know where you guys live, but the game is still climbing the PS store as we speak. It didn't peak on release day. Here in Portugal is now the highest selling game after NBA and EA Sports. This was not on my bingo card but i'm loving it. Hopefully wherever you guys live this is happening.

For me it’s a sweet lovely dessert, it’s not a main course that could overtake something like Elden Ring.
But GOTY? Yup!

Have seen this song and dance far too many times.

Imma gonna write it in same category as Spiderman 2 unless it holds up over time.

High metascore, fanbase going crazy, people cannot stop playing and getting platinums in under 20 hrs etc only to be forgotten in 2 months.

This one people might remember longer cause of nostalgia trigger game seems to have everywhere.

As for game itself, whenever I see someone playing, it seems to have automated most of the fun stuff. And fairly basic moves to dispatch enemies that you can’t fail easily. Still will reserve judgement till I play it.

Do you like 3D platformers?
How would you rank Mario 64 or Mario Galaxy?

There are those who rank those as the best games ever. That’s what you’re seeing here, platformer fans overjoyed to finally get a super-polished AAA 3D platformer.

Plus, nostalgia, it’s like a love letter to those who’ve played on all Playstation consoles, I’ve been smiling so my face hurts. And it looks great, fantastic even, runs perfectly, superbly animated. And there is a ton of creativity in gameplay mechanics, new ideas, gyro, physics, bunch of different pickups you can use, very satisfying and in line with the best Nintendo platformers.

I love it.
But I’m also not one of those who keep listing Super Mario 64 at the top of any all time list. So for this thread I’ll be that cranky nay sayer. For me it’s not something that compete with games like Elden Ring, which I’m still playing 2 years after release with nearly 700 hours logged and will keep on playing long after Astro Bit is just a nice memory.

I enjoy 3D platformers, can easily give GOTY to one.

However this a brand of fun thats rooted in throwing mechanics at player, a ton of them. Most of them tend to be half baked.

Compare it to Mario platformers. Even killing a basic goomba, you need to be very precise. And in some situations where things don’t align, they easily take you out.

Am not seeing that quality here. You get a ton of mechanics, but most of them seem automated. And you taking out enemies also doesn’t look as satisfying.

But again, I will reserve judgement till I play it.

Its absolutely not, you be surprised how well it’s done.

Most of your post just assuming, nothing about the game is automated.

That'd depend on one's personal tastes in genres and styles, but ... yes, Astrobot is definitely in that conversation. The game is just an absolute masterpiece.

For example, I played Elden Ring and did not like it much. I haven't played Baldur's Gate 3 yet.

So, for me, Astrobot and Returnal are the GOTGs as of now. Let's see which new games join this list.

Good Sony game is released, GAF: "its the best thing created since sliced bread"

I'm having fun with it, but GAF is very Sony centric and its obvious sometimes (I know about the Halo Infinite GOTY, dont need to remind me)

I would personaly give GOTY to Wukong, but I wouldnt mind it if Astro Bot takes the most awards this season. Really good game.

GOTG its not tho, lmao. Get a grip. BG 3 exists.

Check out shooting in Uncharted level.

Also how imprecise you can be with your jumps and melee attacks. You might be ok with it but these things bother me.

You really need to play it, it feels awesome, can’t see that on a Youtube video. Best ever haptics and the controls are perfect, it’s super versatile in how you can use your abilities, player focused, camera rotates too slow but that’s all I could complain about.

Its Uncharted level, it trying replicate free shooting you do in actual game.....Also not all enemies you can melee or jump on them.

There is also challenge levels really test your precision......again play the game before making poor assumptions.

It's absolutely crazy what Sony put together this year, albeit with some help from Microsoft. No one was expecting anything from them this year when it was announced they wouldn't have a flagship franchise release. Many at the time tried to suggest that didn't mean no good games, but they didn't want to hear that. That they could have a lock for GOTY wouldn't be on anyone's radar in May.

It's going to be a really strong few months for them.

  • PS5 Pro reveal tomorrow
  • Until Dawn release in October
  • PS5 Pro release in November
  • PS 30th Anniversary
  • Lego Horizon Adventures by the end of the year
  • The Last of Us Season 2 on HBO
  • The Last of Us Part 2 on PC
All of this is probably happening before the start of their next fiscal year, which unless GTA6 gets delayed is going to be a huge year as well.
