Five killed in Ankara ‘car bomb blast’

2/17/16, 6:36 PM CET

At least five people were killed and 10 injured by a car bomb that exploded close to military buildings in the Turkish capital Ankara on Wednesday, the city governor said.

The Dogan news agency said a military vehicle was passing by when the bomb went off, 300 meters from the offices of the heads of the army, navy and air force.

Mehmet Kilicer, the city governor, said officials believe the explosion was caused by a car bomb.

“We are looking into details of the explosion,” Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said.

If these attacks were done by the Kurds, just will add more fuel to the fire which would lead to Turkey taking more actions across the border.

Update:

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-35599323

A vehicle full of explosives was detonated as military buses were passing by, according to the Ankara governor's office.
The blast happened in an area close to parliament and Turkey's military headquarters.
Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag called an "act of terrorism".
Large plumes of smoke were seen rising from the area and witnesses said the blast was heard all over the city.
Some of the victims were civilians.

Well fuck. Poor sods.

It's been report that its done by PKK/YPG since the Turkish military is fighting against them in the southeast and in Syria/Iraq. The term "Kurds" is misleading.

PKK (and even YPG) is a considered a terrorist organisation by many nation. The ones that do not see them as terrorists usually have some political agenda against Turkey, for example Russia.

It's a shame that civilians are being targeted, but it isn't the first time PKK or islamists have done this in Turkey.

Erdogan is also an asshole for turning this country into a shithole, giving breathing room for PKK, allowing refugees in into Turkey without proper background checks, turning a blind eye for islamist groups.

If this was done by the YDG-H/YPS in retaliation for the Turkish shelling of YPG positions in Syria, or as part of their insurgency in south-east Turkey, then it was a stupid idea. Giving Turkey a reason to step things up wont help either of them.

they said they are planning a ground invasion and are on standby.... wonder if this pushes them over the age

but if it is Kurd related then Oh boy things are about to get shitty

It doesn't sound like civilians were being targeted, more like they didn't give a shit.

I'm not sure how they managed to kill 18 and injure 45 if it wasn't their aim though. That's ridiculous.
Stereogatari, and I think he even works for their government going by some of his posts.
I believe he is a Brit but I know what you mean.

Looks like a suicide attack:

(Initially) Turkey blames PKK:
At least 18 killed in huge explosion in car bomb attack in Ankara

A security official told Reuters that initial signs indicate that the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) was behind the Ankara bombing.
Wednesday's attack comes at a tense time when the Turkish government is facing an array of challenges. A fragile peace process with the the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) collapsed in the summer. The Turkish security forces have been engaged in large-scale operations against PKK terrorists in the southeast since December, imposing controversial curfews in flashpoint areas, and the fighting has displaced tens of thousands of civilians.

Dammit. This will not help YPG and the Kurds overall, and it makes the possibility of Turkey's assistance against ISIS even more remote.

Maybe? Now he has political cover.

Erdoan only has to say the terrorists behind this bomb attack are hiding in Syrian Kurdistan and Turkey has the rationale to invade northern Syria. The US invaded Afghanistan after 9/11 and no one batted an eye. Except in the case of a Turkish invasion of Syria the shit will hit the fan, because the Syrian army will see it as an act of war - and they will react with the backing of Russia and Iran.

As someone unfamiliar with Turkey's recent history, has the violence escalated? I know that there is a lot of dissident against Erdogan and with the recent election and the Kurdish population being bombed as an excuse for "ISIS terorrists", there's a lot of volatile danger. The question is if this is more than usual? It certainly most likely is, but I'm just curious as to what is contributing to it.

They typiically have been attacking police/soldiers.

This one was aimed at a military dorm? But as you can see, this is a very public area with many civilians.

Doubt Russia will start a war for this. If Turkey started an invasion I think Russia would reply with more attacks against the rebels not against Turkey itself.

Just keep doubting until that war breaks out.

Weren't western nations providing arms to the Kurds? Is this the same Kurdish faction?

Definitely not to PKK as On 2 April 2004, the Council of the European Union added the PKK to its list of terrorist organizations.

Has the PKK ever done suicide attacks before? Targeting civilians, especially this way, seems very unlike them.

You appear to be clueless. Just an excerpt:

/I don't mean no disrespect, just that I heard about PKK doing suicide attacks from the late 90s on.

Why do I have a feeling this is not PKK?

When you actively harbour terrorists and create insurgencies in neighbouring countries what the fuck did you think would happen?

Erdogan played a game way WAY out of his league, now the country is going to pay the price. Such a travesty because Turkey was doing so well, at one pint the shining beacon of the middle-east.

If it was the kurds, it was the PKK, and turkey has been shelling the YPG in syria, either way, Turkey has already said that they dont want to enter Syria alone, that they want Nato's support.

Not sure why? Seems to be the MO of PKK, attacks against Police/Military.

Saudis said the same thing, but's never going happen. NATO doesn't want a standoff with Russia. They are clearly impatient and will eventually do something stupid.

Well they don't do suicide attacks very often especially lately but they've been known to do them from time to time.

Also they were targeting military vehicles with this attack but like many of their other attacks in the cities they just didn't care if someone else got in the way.

Didn't the Turkish army just finished crippling the PKK in south east areas? Also, what the hell is the MIT doing ffs? How many terror attacks will Turkey witness inside its borders before they do something?

yeah if it is the PKK then this will likely even worsen tensions between some Kurdish groups and the Turks

but I don't see any solution coming from aggression... it will just spiral downwards into more chaos were Turks and Kurds from both sides will suffer from the chaos of two major groups

it is obviously over complicated when it comes to a stateless people and a national identity of the other country but someone needs to take the hit and either give Kurds a state since even though they can run for parliament they're the minority and would not be able to have enough power unless common Turks would vote for them.

Of course this is easier said then done since the Kurdish regions extends between not one but four countries.

Erdogan vows retaliation after Ankara attack: presidency - Yahoo News

Ankara (AFP) - President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday vowed that Turkey was more determined than ever to use its right to "self-defence" after a car bomb targeting military service vehicles killed at least 28 people.

"Our determination to respond in kind to attacks taking place inside and outside our borders is getting stronger with such acts," Erdogan said in a statement. "It must be known that Turkey will not shy away from using its right to self-defence at any time, any place or any occasion."

At this point it seems very likely that Turkey will, at least, carve out a safe zone from the Syrian borderland.

You can say the exact same thing about 9/11.
