Audioslave - Out of Exile

What's sad is that there are some wicked solos there, and some great guitar riffs, but they are usually mired in general hard-rock stuff, making it feel as the perfect middle between Rage against the machine and *gulp* Bon Jovi. Think of it as the rock that Pearl Jam would do if they'd just give in and go mainstream (well, more mainstream?), mixed with Morello solos.

To sum it up,

First album = Rage Against the Slave

This album = Audiogarden

I liked Soundgarden, but I loved Rage, and was hoping for more of that.

I agree with mike. Not enough Rage-esqe songs like on the first one. I want songs like Cochise and Show me how to live.

Well after one real quick listen, Id have to say I agree with you guys. Id did really enjoy their first album tho.

I've just heard the first 4 songs but I am really loving them. The first album seemed a lot rougher and more thrown together. This sound more polished and flows with Cornell's voice better.

Even though going with Rage isn't my first choice for Cornell I'm so glad he is putting out music, I can't imagine having to go without hearing that voice, it is so amazing.

This is just my first impressions, I'll have to listen to all the songs a bunch of times to really get a good feel for it.

Soundgarden >>> RATM!!!

Haven't bought this album yet but I don't think I'll like it very much. Too soft :( Probably sounds over-produced as well.

Artists need to stop making slower, softer songs when they get older. Just give us raw, balls to the walls, make your neighbours call the police on you metal!! Not something Bon Jovi would play.

when you try that, you end up with:

Old people just don't rock anymore. Chris Cornell still kicks ass and he doesn't have to fake it.

Haha, was thinking about that while writing that post.

Thing is, I want to hear more of SG and RATM, and not something Coldplay would make...

:lol Here's a tip for future rock bands. if you have to go through group therapy to resolve your anger, then you need to stop playing Rock N Roll music.

Yea, this album just isn't nearly as good as their first. It's was too soft. I do like "Be Yourself" though. I think Soundgarden > RATM, but one of my friends likes Audioslave the most because he said it brought together the best parts of each band. I'd have to agree with him, plus the first album was great, but I always said, just wait until the second album to see if they really are as good as RATM and Soundgarden. I guess I was right. Unfortunately.

OK, I just bought this CD today and I'm digging it. It's obviously not as good as their debut album, but it is definitely worth it if you're an Audioslave fan. I listened to it from their website the other day, but I wasn't paying very close attention at the time, I didn't realize how much Rage-sounding guitar is still present. Some songs don't really sound like Rage or Soundgarden to me (like Doesn't Remind Me). I do wish the album was a little harder and edgier, but at this point I've been waiting so freaking long for a new album I'm thankful for whatever they put out.

I can see how some people can say they suffer from the "sophomore slump" to a degree with this album, but overall it's not as bad as previous opinions had led me to believe.

Listened to it again. Still boring. Still sounds like Bon Jovi meets Rage meets Soundgarden.

The last few songs are pretty lame. But the album starts off great. It's a shame it ends on such a weak note. It looks like it's gonna be one of those "listen to the good songs over and over and over to get your money's worth" albums. I'm still glad I got it though. I can imagine the Rage guys looking at each other and shrugging when first rehearsing those last songs.

This is very Soundgarden like. I like it. Need to listen to it more before I conclude.

Ok...this album is the fucking shit. I absolutely love it. I've had some time to digest it and all it took was one very loud listen and I'm in love. This is such an incredible year with music for me. God I fucking love you, Chris.

...I'm pretty disappointed. The only song on here that grabs you by the nuts is "The Worm". That said, a 60% effort from Cornell & Co. is better than 99% of the stuff that's out there today, so I'll live. I was expecting more.

I just got the album, i find it OK, there first effort was much better. It does have a few kick ass songs like "man or animal" and "the worm". I find it satisfactory, i wish it was better but im not complaining.

Same, but I don't think either album delievered in that respect (more Rage, I mean).

I just take Audioslave as a new entity of it's own, because while on it's own they are not as good as either Rage or Soundgarden, they are still a good band (and I would say better than a few of SG's albums). Anyway, I wasn't really planning on picking up Out of Exile (At least not right away, I forgot it was even released), but I went out to pick up the new Gorillaz album yesterday and came back with OoE too. I'm liking it. And like others have said, the album grows on you.

Still listening to it, and no sir - I don't like it much.

The thing is, even Soundgarden at its most subdued (Down On The Upside) was much meatier than this offering. What's worse is that the first album actually showed a lot of promise heading in that direction. This just feels washed out. Not out and out terrible, but a missed opportunity to build on the original's foundation. Bummer.

Thank God SOAD's new album is also here to rectify the situation.

MY LIFESTYLE DETERMINES MY DEATHSTYLE. :(

Oh, and the new SOAD makes me cry, actually. I was really dissapointed by that. :(

Keep it off my wave. Alive in the Superunknown. One more time around might do it. I'm the wreck of you all.

Never forget. :(

I have been obsessed with this album and Down on the Upside for the past few days.

Bish - DOTU might be their weakest, but it starts out pretty damn good (Zero Chance is one of the band's best songs IMO), and then there are more classics like Blow Up the Outside World and Burden in my Hand.

Superunknown is pure genius, though. Did Cornell see the funamentalist loons and greedy corporations stealing everyone's integrity when he wrote "Limo Wreck" over 10 years ago? What he was writing almost seemed like fiction (the need to react to such things so seriously)... but today, it makes perfect sense... you might as well be apathetic too unless you want to become another drone...

The new album is a such a dissapointment. I bought it, listened to it once, and put it on the shelf never to be heard again. I think the new Gorillaz cd is good as well as the System of a Down cd. I'm looking forward to the new Dream Theater cd.

Just to clarify, "subdued" doesn't mean "weakest" when I'm referring to Down on the Upside. :) It's an amazing album that demonstrates great range and I love it.

I'm really liking the album now, some filler, but overall pretty good.

Dandelion is probably one of my favourites, along with Out of Exile, Be Yourself, Yesterday to Tomorrow (can't remember if that was its exact name).

God dammit I miss 90's music.
I mean, we'll always have it, but the bands are gone. :(
And if they're still around they are nothing like they used to be (e.g. Pearl Jam).

Oh yeah, Chris Cornell is the best vocalist alternative rock has ever known. YES Tool fans, Cornell > Maynard. There, I said it. Someone had to say it. It needed to be said.

What's depressing is that Cornell is now doing his thing in Audioslave, and I just don't get it. When you listen to the Chris Cornell in Soundgarden you hear someone that's way too confident and independent to ever want to play the corporate "LET'S MAKE A SUPERBAND!" game. Of course, Corgan did the same thing.

I mean Cornell just seems to look and act different than he did in even 1996. I dunno if he's mellowed out or what, but I wonder what he thinks of some of the things he used to write? Like Limo Wreck for example. He speaks of a corporate greedy America that he's expecting to crumble; now he's a player in the game he damned in that song. Weird.

Cornell is the greatest fucking singer of all time, this is no secret.

By the way, does anybody else get a crazy fucking Led Zeppelin vibe from "Dandelion" at exactly 2:59 until 3:14? I swear to God if you told me Robert Plant wrote this song I'd believe you in a heartbeat. I fucking LOVE the writing of this record more than I do the first; I just think it's so frigin beautiful.

God I would so do Chris Cornell...Out of Exile rox my sox.
