(Aug 2-11) The Intenational 2013 DOTA2 championships [Team USA Playing!]

Prize pool as of today...still going up too..

Wow...That is one insane prize pool.

I'll be there in attendance and I can't wait for all the "at the event" stuff they will be doing. Ordered a couple NeoGAF shirts (DOTA + Dino), so say hello if you see me. A meetup one night after the event would be cool too.

So it is still winner takes all in the grand finals?

Never knew what a compendium actually gave you before now so I should buy one..

wow they sold around 1,1mio Compendiums?
Thats a really smart idea, the bigger the game becomes the bigger will be the prize pool each year.
But from 7,99€ only 2.50$ goes to the prize pool?

Valve keeps 75%. But when you look at The International and what it probably costs Valve to produce, that 75% only helps them a little. Overall they are still in the red for the cost of competition. 2.5 million for the prize pool + the venue, the production, hotel and airfare for all teams and staff. This thing costs Valve at least 10 million.

$10mil? That seems way too high.

Well you'll get a bunch of stuff from meeting the milestones (courier, HUD, taunts, immortal item).
Just read about that, cool didn't realize before you get stuff simply for buying it and not just for doing good in the Fantasy stuff (which I guess I can ask my experienced Dota friends for help with too). Plus I can think of the $10 as payment for the game and wipe the guilt lol.

I gotta figure out who the worst team is this year so I know who to root for. Disappointment is such sweet nectar.

Seems reasonable to me. 2.5 million just for the prize pool. Renting Benaroya hall for 5 days of competition (plus however many days it takes to set up the hall. 2 extra days?). Paying for a company to come out and provide top quality production of the event. That would include the entire production staff, cameras, make up artist, etc. Everything that goes into producing any live sport applies to this event. Hardware for the events. Set design. Room, board, and airfare for hundreds of people that will be in Seattle for about 2 weeks. Many costs we cant even imagine to put on a show like this. I'd say it costs a minimum of 10 million.

Pretty sure there are Valve employees who contribute to that, especially in the production department. Heck, the stage booths were designed by a Valve guy who used to be an architect.

Probably LGD.int

Yes, but you don't get a "My name contributed $2.50" to the prize pool when you look inside.

hate that shit. Asked a friend to spot me a compendium cause I didn't have my card with my at that exact moment, but little did I know I would just be putting his steam ID on my DOTA profile forever.

Anyway, TI3 get hype baby! We in there!

So, if I don't buy the compendium, what I'd miss? Are there items or benefits akin of "get them now or never"?

You get in game items worth $10. They aren't beneficial to making you a better player but if you play Dota regularly or want to support e-sports its a great value.

SO EXCITE

I might be in Seattle on the Saturday or Sunday, so if I could just stop by at the shop without a ticket Valve that would be great, thanks.

The production is not that elaborate. It's nice, but it's not like they're putting on the super bowl here, also streaming on the internet is much simpler than a national TV broadcast. Like I could see everything costing 3-4mil at the very most.

Gonna be awesome. I'm heading to my friends' place in Calgary to watch the championship weekend. Still wish it didn't coincide with the SC2 WCS regionals, but there's no missing TI3.

multitwitch.tv

Ain't no problem son

So if i use the auto-spectate code, and a match ends, will it move on to the next match?

Yes, unless your power or internet goes out it should catch the whole day of games. I was worried it wouldn't work for the qualifiers - but it ended up working quite nicely.

Yessssss.. It has nearly returned. Can't wait to see how my haphazard fantasy team picks do.

Also, more Bruno fashion-show!

yeah i'd say this thing cost around thereabout, maybe 5mil max
valve isn't a charity organization
about paying companies for coming out and provide top quality production of the event, i actually think this will cost very little, those companies will just put the costs for this event as marketing expense and advertising expense, it's a good deal for them too

Subscribed.

Just got into Dota 2, will follow this The International. Wondering if I should get that Compendium thing or if it's a waste for someone like me who doesn't know the teams, players and etc and will purely be watching for the high-stakes high-level gameplay. I do need to start buying some shit from the Dota store soon-ish though, or I'll start feeling guilty for playing such incredible game for free.

I'd highly recommend getting the Compendium. At $10 you get a lot of good things.

You get:
- special, upgradeable courier (by watching TI3 games and by random drops)
- HUD skin
- Immortal item
- Taunts
- 125% Battle bonus (I think it's 125 at least) until the end of the tournament. This increases the rate at which you level up, which means you get more items (and it stacks with other players)

There's also the e-sport side of it where a portion of your purchase goes directly to the prize pool. There's one last stretch goal if the community hits $3.2 million where we get to vote on which hero Valve puts in the game next. Granted, as someone who didn't play Dota 1 (myself included) that doesn't mean too much as you never played the heroes to begin with, but it's still pretty neat.

*Edit* Also, I'm going to be heading to TI3 in person! I went last year and it was a blast. Really excited to go this year again with more friends.

I know little to nothing about high level Dota, but I will be watching because the stakes are so high and because I plan on getting into Dota soon.
