(Aug 2-11) The Intenational 2013 DOTA2 championships [Team USA Playing!]

I know little to nothing about high level Dota, but I will be watching because the stakes are so high and because I plan on getting into Dota soon.

Join us in NeoGAF chat and feel free to ask questions. You'll have fun :)

Im more excited about this than NRL Origin time.

AND THOSE WHO GO, I'LL SEE YOU THERE!

Someone I know is going to get stuff for me there, and hopefully he can get me an autograph from you! :D

Seems reasonable to me. 2.5 million just for the prize pool. Renting Benaroya hall for 5 days of competition (plus however many days it takes to set up the hall. 2 extra days?). Paying for a company to come out and provide top quality production of the event. That would include the entire production staff, cameras, make up artist, etc. Everything that goes into producing any live sport applies to this event. Hardware for the events. Set design. Room, board, and airfare for hundreds of people that will be in Seattle for about 2 weeks. Many costs we cant even imagine to put on a show like this. I'd say it costs a minimum of 10 million.

I think I read somewhere that the marketing budget for the Dota 2 last year was $5 mil and they used it to fund the international. So around $5 mil is reasonable for the whole event. 10 mil is way to high for an event like this.

This is my last post in here until we get a proper OP. The title is cringeworthy!

Edit: Buy more compendiums, guys.

If its anything I can sign balls and feathers onto, I'll do it for you <3 haha

I wonder if modelers/icefrogs can do this too and if its multiplicable.

I want my Shagbark autographed by Anuxi, TvDot, Cyborgmatt, and Danidem.

This is the OP we're getting? That thread title? No pictures for teams or the venue?

C'mon son. It is full of useful links, but it's missing some flair and class.

Criticism aside, I'm hyped! Where are the # team rankings coming from and what happened to the missing teams (#9 #13 #15 #17? Liquipedia doesn't have any and looking at the joindota rankings, they're completely different.
I decided to update the OP so it loads faster with less images. I took some feedback from other tourneys and made the decision to go lean. Also the multi-image sets look horrific on mobile - which I'm on alot.

Team rankings are from http://www.gosugamers.net/dota2/rankings. The missing teams are like EG and Kaipi who didn't qualify but got a lot of wins in July

yeah i'd say this thing cost around thereabout, maybe 5mil max
valve isn't a charity organization
about paying companies for coming out and provide top quality production of the event, i actually think this will cost very little, those companies will just put the costs for this event as marketing expense and advertising expense, it's a good deal for them too

Come on man. Nobody is doing the broadcast production of an esport for the marketing. Come on man.

Let me break down the costs for everybody here. I dont think I was really thorough or precise enough in my previous post.

2.5 million right off the top for the prize pool

All the hardware that is needed for events. How many performance level PC's do you think Valve needs for this? 30? 40? At what is likely more than $1500 for each PC plus monitors. How much other types of hardware we cant even think of?

Renting Benaroya hall for 5 days of competition, and probably 7 days to include set up, thorough testing, and breakdown of the production equipment and sets. In actuality they probably have to rent the hall for 8 or 9 days. 1 day is probably not enough time to have everything set up and properly tested. I wouldnt know what any hall costs to rent, but Benaroya doesnt look like the kind of place that comes cheap.

Airfare, food, lodging, and other travel expenses for hundreds of people covering 10 or 11 days. Wild card matches start August 2nd so all of the teams are probably already there or will be there tomorrow. Players, team managers, the various casters and people affiliated with the companies the casters work for. People we cant even think of but Valve needs them there and has to pay a salary + airfare, hotel, food, and travel expenses. Hell man just think about how much it must cost for all of the vehicle services that Valve hire to move people around Seattle. The players, casters, etc do not drive themselves anywhere. Valve takes care of every movement of these people for 11 days with vehicles and drivers. How much does just that cost?

The production company is actually 3 different companies working together.

Again, they are not just hired for the 5 days of competition. There is time needed for set up and breakdown and months of consultation and planning between Valve and the 3 companies.

For goodness sakes man Valve has to hire makeup artists for the photoshoots that the players do. This is an expensive event to put on. And it takes more than just the 5 days they are broadcasting from the hall.

How many ancillary costs that we cant even think of? Maybe the whole thing doesn't cost 10 million or over 10 million, but sure as hell costs more than 5 million.

I was there last year had a great time was going again this year, but friends couldn't go and I just didn't want to go alone. Now I just feel depressed.

Dude all dose free swags. Omg.

I would be lying if I said thats not one of the reasons I loved the secret shop and items, this year it seems so much better. Honestly I think its a blessing in disguise, buying a ticket from a reseller to hotels would have been about 700 $ atleast for the trip. I love my cosmetic items, yet recently I've been playing LoL more than Dota 2 so once again I shouldn't blindly go. Anyways I got both consoles on pre-order would be nice if I got some games with them. Next year.

Also the ticket situation was a mess this year, my hopes are they get a bigger venue for TI4.

I don't know how tight money is with you, but a $1000 investment could probably doubled or tripled depending on how those autographed items sell

Yeah, my TI2 trip was funded itself from couriers. Money isn't tight for me, I just don't want to go alone with the hassle of planning on short notice. I offered to pay for my friends ticket also 250$. Then the some part of me is like DOOO IT FOR TEH PHAT LEWTS. Compounded with the fact that our family business is short staffed, I should stay.

I actually set aside an EF Blue Yak and an EF Indigo Yak to sell a few months in the near future for a PS4. I love Dota.

I kind of feel bad for Gowans. That Ursa dress is going to be $1000 soon. Then again it gets too hard to sell online - you'd almost have to do a face to face.

Oh mods, you have no sense of fun. All uniform and prim and proper, but we still got the intenational - live from Brooklyn.

Nice, I still have a Drodo, Lockjaw, and Immortal pudge hook. Also once the tournaments start, I'm just going to buy the couriers straight up. I had alpine ursa sold it for 2 copies of Borderlands 2. Fuck me.

Even worse I remember telling my friend the community is making a huge outrage about alpine ursa you should get one also when I bought it. He didn't and the extra copy went to him. Worst part is I still haven't played more than 2 hours of BL2.

Dendi only looks right yelling US-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, and the crowd responding FUCK YEAH!!!!!

Here I am sitting here talking about memories of last year and not going this time, and you guys link PICS. Best part about this moment is my friend sleeping/snoring and he just wakes up and is like WTF just happened while cheering for nothing.

Why would they buy new PCs? Dota2 isn't on some new engine from last year. They already have the PCs from TI1 and TI2.

Fear the roar of Dendi

I don't plan on moving from my couch August 7-11th.

Man minds were fucking BLOWN when that happened. Me and my friends thought Puppey was throwing the game with the picks, but NaVi managed to pull of their strats magnificently. They lost the final against iG but their battles in the quarter final and semi final was the stuff of legends. Most people wrote them off after their disastrous prelims but they just bounce back. Hell, iG and LGD were godlike throughout the whole tournament too.

Look here to get an idea of how much work goes into this thing. Everything from the banners airing out on is for this years TI3. http://instagram.com/dota2ti

Looks like I was way off on the rental for Benaroya Hall. They already have it rented out and are working inside of it right now.

I didn't say it was going to be cheap but you can produce a season of a TV show on $10mil easily. Also some things can be reused, which is why I responded to you adding new PCs to the cost when they are probably reusing the same computers from last year.

Why would they buy new PCs? Dota2 isn't on some new engine from last year. They already have the PCs from TI1 and TI2.
Not sure why hardware makers aren't killing themselves to sponsor the tourney with top of the line machines - maybe it interferes with team sponsors or volvo code

If i buy a Compendium from the marketplace, will i get the free courier and stuff? or is that only with the new ones?

You'll get everything! You want to make sure you buy it ASAP and complete the predictions before they close so you get the courier bonuses.

Yup, it's just the same - except you don't get a message saying you contributed X dollars to help fund the International.

Predictions close in 30 hours for anyone who hasn't done them.

ill do this tonight then! just started getting into dota2 since they have tutorials and such so i can learn the game and character types. Still learning so i figure watchin these pros will help!
