AusGAF 11 - Twice the price, a year late but still moving forward

Not open for further replies.
Finished up Luther today and am now looking for another show to netflix binge. Maybe I'll wait until after Daredevil. Time to catch up on some movies. Either Rubber or John Dies in the End tonight.

I'd put the last season on a pedal stool but the one hour ending special was a bit of a damp squid.

Watched Speed Racer on Canada Netflix. I feel like that movie pulled off being lame and incredible at the same time. My eyes are burning after watching it.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Is there a list of content to be found on services like Netflix and Stan? Finding such data is proving harder than I expected and someone I know wants a comparison.

Speaking of, is there any way to watch GoT here without foxtel?

Has anyone been playing bloodborne? I'm having a lot of fun with it, as depressing as it is.

Yes, we are infamous for that way :p

Bloodborne is great despite me sucking at it (also being too scared to play for long).

Yup, made a lot of progress during easter too!

Tho playing late into the night has given me some pretty weird blood filled dreams which is always great:/

Yup, I am playing at a slow pace though. Learning the enemy types and their attacks, exploring everything, etc. Reached the third boss.

Anyone looking to co-op? We can set an AusGAF password.

LTTP but just started watching the IT Crowd and am halfway through season 2 (each season is 6 eps). The show is literally laugh out funny.

"Have you turned it off and on again?"

Love it.

I don't understand the love for IT Crowd. First 2 seasons are pretty good, but that's about as far as I'd go.

There are many funnier shows around! Many many.

Huh, I just got a formal, anonymous invitation to the Google Sydney offices for an "Adsense workshop".
I bet it'd be lame as shit, but how often do you get to go to the Google offices?

There's a ton of websites out there with NetFlix listings. AllFlix is pretty good for US tracking.

Cheers guys, really appreciate it.

Don't say this guys. Please don't.

Honestly, it's crap. Bugs everywhere, typical Obsidian, and there's all this... reading to do. Who even reads any more anyway? Most of the dialog isn't even voiced so I just skip past it all. And there are way too many dialog choices. Who cares lol, I just keep tapping 1 until it's finished so I can find the guns. There's guns right?

Is there a way to load it up, play for 5 mins, pause and then leave it open for the rest of the day?

That is how I love to video game.

I love the Speed Racer Movie, it's like a huge sugar rush! I showed it to my wife recently and I think she questioned why she married me.

Had a great 4 day break. Was suppose to head down to NSW to visit my parents but I'm on call for work and got the vibes that I should probably stay home just in case some work came in. Nothing came in, but I really enjoyed the downtime.

I finally got BF Hardline working on PC thanks to hours of EA online support. I had to create a new windows admin account (crazy, right?), but at least I get to play. Buuuuuuut, there is nearly no one playing it in Aus. 2 full 64 player servers and that's about it, at peak times. I feel like I should have bought it on PS4, but I wanted to use my 980 I bought recently.

Other than that, I binged on Netflix. Few episodes of House of Cards, Harmontown which is a great look at Dan Harmon, creator of Community. The Raid 2 (soooooo brutal) and a few smaller shows in between. If you like adult cartoons Boejack Horsman is worth checking out.

Played some CAH with some friends Saturday night too. I get that alot of people hate it now, but its so accessible and fun to play with friends.

If you are in Brisbane this coming weekend, you should check out Lansmash. 2 days of PC and console gaming.

There's a big Smash Bros tournament happening on Saturday and some fun comps across 2 days. Come say hi!

Pillars of Eternity is a pretty good video game.
PoE is great, 47 hours in and just finished Act 2.
I'm around 30 hours in and also really enjoying it. I think there's a lot of room for improvement (the combat and equipment stats are hardly straightforward, the central story is pretty thin so far and the number of side quests make me forget it, combat can be confusing to see what's happening, party doesn't walk in formation), but the game I expected when I pledged on Kickstarter is the game I've received, and it's damn good at that.

I had a lot of difficulty with combat in the first 10 hours so dialled it back to easy, but once I found a good party grouping (fighter, paladin, druid, priest, cipher, wizard), put it back to normal and honestly I think even that's too easy sometimes. I also somehow missed the massive city and headed out east probably 5-8 levels before I should have, so that made things a bit harder.

Good to hear Obsidian are still awesome at side missions! I think the story in those smaller missions are the best of their lot, might be just the approach Avellone is best at.

I've stayed on normal. There were a few encounters that I had to leave and come back to, but I assume they were designed that way. For example, short of some weird class ability that I don't know about, I doubt anyone could solo that bear at level 1 with no gear and resources. I really liked the options to resolve that quest by the way. Also early on I was running back to the inn after every encounter.

I've only just now gotten a full group, and I can see how things might start to get a bit easy. I like winning by the skin of my teeth, so I'll probably bump the difficulty a bit if it gets too easy.

I like that the stats system is complex and that I don't really understand it yet but that doesn't really get in the way of being able to play the game.

I agree that it can be hard to see what's going on. I keep reaching for camera controls like NWN2 so I can spin around and zoom in and get a better view. Sometimes it's hard to find the target ring for something, despite being able to see the mobs name in tab.

I didn't bother with the formation, I created a tank group and a caster group RTS style. When I'm likely to be attacked, I have the tank group scout ahead and let the casters bring up the rear.

Some of the side quests are amazing. I did one yesterday which had multiple twists in the story, a couple of dungeons, boss fights, and some great morality choices, some people may never even do that quest, would love to say more about it but I don't want to spoil it. In fact I have enjoyed every quest so far and haven't skipped one, except the ones that are too hard and I can come back to. I am also playing on normal, I believe the intended difficulty is hard and I can see that now at level 9 (12 being the max level), but I still wipe during certain battles *shakes fist at shades*. The difficulty curve spikes at the start of the game but gets pretty manageable soon after. The great thing is, you can always create a custom character to help you along the way.

Also. After a couple of unforseen setbacks

I seem to be ready to buy a new PC again and SO I appeal to AusGAF for help!

Requirements:

I have a budget of $500-$600.

I have some of the pieces already: two 24" monitors, a Cintiq, speakers, a G19 keyboard, a webcam, and a dinky little mouse that the wife hates but it does this cool colour-cycling thing that I love. I also have a new graphics card that Evlcookie generously donated!

Has to have Windows. Don't really mind what version, I get on with 8 just fine on the SP2.

Has to have 8GB of RAM, preferably 16 but eh I'm getting on fine with 4 so 8 is an upgrade.

Has to have a fuckton of USB ports. You think I'll be fine with the number of USB ports your machine has? I probably need twice that and still need more. It's just stupid how many USB ports I need. I have no idea WTF I need them for, I just know I'm always out of them.

A SSD to host Windows, Photoshop and whatever other basic apps would be great, but I'll also need a nice big regular hard drive to go with it for file storage.

Would be great to have some gaming grunt but not too fussed on this point. It'll be primarily used for Manga Studio, Photoshop, and Chrome. Most of my game dev work is done in Game Maker and Twine these days, hardly power-hungry apps :)

Also AusGAF you are looking lovely today have you lost weight

Powered USB hub will solve this issue.

I am assuming you're getting Windows from r/microsoftsoftwareswap for cheap. If you need to get full price Windows, you'll have to drop the SSD to stay under budget.

Case is ugly AF but that's the price you pay for such a shoestring budget. It comes with a (probably mediocre) 500w PSU included and seems to be large enough. I don't know how big the graphics card you're using is, if it's really long its theoretically possible it may not fit, but fucked if I know.

The CPU should be overclocked. It's a dual core pentium anniversary, there are guides to how to do this online. It's a beast when OCd for its price, it's only "ok" at stock clocks though. Some games that literally will not run without more than 2 cores (Far Cry 4) will not work, even tho the CPU should be powerful enough to run that game in principle.

4x USB 2.0 ports, 2x USB 3.0 ports on the rear. The case should take 1 more of each on the front, assuming you hook up the cables correctly. IF YOU NEED MORE THAN 8 PORTS BECAUSE YOU'RE A LUNATIC, you can try forking out 30 bucks for this expansion card. Or buying a USB hub (doesn't give you the same speeds if it's going from one port to many but will allow them to be plugged in simultaneously).

I've got plenty of USB ports on my maximus 4 extreme-z, working ports however... The damn thing randomly ejects them (software-wise) when I overclock my 2500k and it appears to be a common issue with Asus motherboards. It's resulted in a faulty keyboard and a dead mouse :/

I've said it before but I'm definitely doing my research properly when it comes to motherboards whenever it comes time to upgrade.

Interesting, I have the same problem with an Asus Hero VI with a 4770K at 4.5GHz. I am getting keen to upgrade the PC but waiting on a decent GPU (reasonably priced) to make it worthwhile to replace my 780's, I want to go back to a single card.

My current motherboard supports USB 3.0, but disables it if I use SLI Nvidia cards, which I currently do =\

Mutes, thanks for much for this. Looks like good times ahead!

Just wanted to say to any BrisGAF folk on the fence about going to LANSmash - it's seriously fun. Great vibe, great people, do it.

Aus Netflix question peeps:

I'm using the TV version of the app in my LG, and for whatever reason it looks like it defaults to using all the motion interpolation crud whenever I'm watching movies, so they all now look like cheap soap operas. The problem is compounded as for some reason my TV won't allow me to change the picture settings while using Netflix.

I haven't used the Aus Netflix PS4 app yet, but I was wondering if anyone was having this issue?

Also - I should probably just contact Netflix support, eh?

So after many many years of bad posture (e.g. slouching while sitting at a computer) and now 4-5 years of chronic neck pain I have started to try and correct it. For the last few days I have been sitting up straight while doing computer work and although I am not finding it incredibly hard to sit like this I am getting serious shoulder pain (around the traps), and a burning sensation in the muscles. I assume this is from using muscles that have been mostly dormant in recent times, anyone else here have experience with correcting their posture?

I would contact LG support. Or try updating your TV's software, there's a good chance it'll update that app as well I'd think.

No issues with that on either the PS4 or even WDTV version of the app.

If you've had 4-5 years of chronic neck pain there's obviously something going on, but whenever someone complains about my "slouching" at work I send them this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/6187080.stm

That's nearly ten years old now though, so eh, it's probably rubbish.

Regarding my neck pain, I have seen pretty much every specialist category under the sun, and had lots of treatment with physios, chiros and all manner of tests like MRIs, CT scans, blood tests (for things like ankylosing spondylitis) and so far have found nothing. My best success is my current appointments with a sports therapist (sort of a cross between massage therapist and physio). My pain has been reduced from daily severe pain with tension headaches, requiring a bunch of daily tablets including endep and NSAIDs down to daily moderate pain and pain relievers only once a fortnight. I have essentially had a constant headache for near 5 years now, I have forgotten what it is like to have an entirely clear head in that regard :)

My main issue seems to be years of not using my upper back muscles to support my head, which has resulted in my head being pulled forward, chin poking to a degree. Regarding my slouching it has looked more like this

slouch.jpg

The problem here is a combination of things but also note the lack of lumbar support. My sitting up straight I am not sitting up directly straight but tilted slightly back but with support on my lumber and not hunching my shoulders. I have read that study you linked and there still seems to be two schools of thoughts, I guess at the end of the day different bodies respond to different things, thanks for the comments.

I've been to a few events there are they've been held downstairs on ground level in a couple of large conference rooms. They usually do a good job hosting and provide food and/or booze afterwards though!
