AusGAF 11 - Twice the price, a year late but still moving forward

Since I have all 3 now I'll give my review of the pleb gaming figures.

Skylanders: cheapest and smallest of the 3. Build quality and paint is great but basic. Go on sale regularly and you can get a 3 pack for $5-10 fairly soon after launch. The premium figures (Swapforce/Giant/etc) tend to hit similar prices as the plain ones too.

Infinity: Middle range of cost, $11/12 atm but Hulk is $17 for some odd reason. Build quality and detail is fantastic, larger than the other 2 (sometimes by a ton) and they really have been designed well. Thor is really impressive with an almost floating cape and all the figures drawn your attention.

Amiibo: Most expensive, mid range size, great minimalist designs but lack the flair of Infinity. Also the suckiest ingame out of the 3.

(reviewer has dozens and dozens of Skylanders, 7 Amiibos, 9 Infinity figures)

poor captain kinopio :(

I sure hope Target has a good launch price lined up, otherwise I probably won't grab it until later in the year. Getting a cheap copy of LBP3 on Monday too :)

I was taking my two year old through a video game aisle on Boxing Day and he pointed at the Amiibo display, indicating that he wanted the Mario with the fire coming out of his hands.

I was like sorry you're too young for video games and walked away from the aisle when he began to cry. As much joy as video games have given me over the years, I kind of want to delay their introduction into his life so he can develop other interests and not be completely useless at socially beneficial hobbies (i.e. sports, music) with no way of catching up like I was.

Does that make me a bad parent?

There's some evidence that video games can make kids better learners. If a kid can adjust to the many and varied mechanics of video games, they can gain some confidence in their own ability to pick up new skills in other areas.

If you're asking for opinions, I think the most important thing you can do is learn to limit their time at the one hobby, and in doing so teach them some self control. A lot of parents will tell you that that's necessary anyway, if they watch tv/YouTube for too long, or play video games for too long, or play trains and Lego for too long, it can put kids in shitty moods and make them harder for you to deal with. Video games or not, this is probably a parenting skill you'll have to learn anyway. So you might as well share your passion with him.

Everything in moderation makes you a good parent.
Games are good but make sure to mix it up, start from the bottom of the range too. Son spends more time with his Leapster than our WiiU/PS4 since it's more educational.

That's true, guys. Where would half of us be without Mavis Beacon and her typing institute? He has some Leapster stuff already, but it's very simple counting and letter recognition stuff that goes over his head for the moment.

I just don't want him to develop the binging habit like I did (tendency to do things 100% or not at all), finishing the original SMB while failing to develop in other equally important ways.

what is function of parent

is function of parent to ensure child's life is satisfaction of momentary whims
It is around Christmas time, to be fair.

Which Leapster device does he have? Just got the Explorer Octonauts game for Xmas and its fantastic.

Not sure. It's a little alphabet keyboard with an LCD screen that says things like "Find the Letter!"

The more advanced ones aren't on the radar yet.

EDIT: He does love Octonauts though

Dude just get him a Wii and monitor his use.

Obviously I have no experience with parenting, but 2 seems a mite young for a fully fledged console and all its insidous design hooks

I don't remember when I got my first console / computer. Probably around prep or grade 1. Parents had a ZX Spectrum +2, and then later got me a NES... so I was probably around 3-5 years old.

and I was damaged goods ever since.

Alternatively you could do that thing where you introduce videogaming chronologically

go out there and dig up spacewars and see how he likes that

We are doing awful in the cricket today, so many dropped catches >_<

Ah not sure on that one. My 4 year old has a Storio which barely gets touched and a Leapster Explorer which is more popular.

He gets the odd turn on the WiiU/PS4 as a treat for 20 minutes or so at a time. Just started Infinity 2.0 and it's a great sandbox for him.

Hoping to buy him a Vita & Minecraft when he turns 5 :)

Heh, just a stupid GAF meme.

Holy fuck just upgrade internet to Optus Cable.

$90 a month (used to cost $115)

  • Local Calls - Unlimited
  • 13/1300 Calls - Unlimited
  • Standard National Calls - Unlimited
  • Optus Mobiles - Unlimited
  • Other Australian Mobiles - Unlimited
  • International Calls - World Saver Ultimate pack included (unlimited landline to 23 countries and unlimited mobile to 7 counties)
  • FetchTV - 30 selected movies a month (1 TB box record Free to Air channels). plus a FetchTV channel pack
  • Free Cable modem
  • No sign up, setup, delivery fees or other fees just the 90$ a month
They even upgraded us to the 100Mbps speeds which normally costs $20 extra a month (not mentioned on the website). All for the $90 and it stays the same after the 24month contract expires.

To get all that on ADSL 2+ i was previously paying $110 a month! and i never got fetch TV and was getting ADSL+ speeds! I had 3 bills for VoiP+Phoneline+Internet from 3 different companies.

I am paying less for more! and its all under one company now!

(sorry if i sound like an Optus shill/salesman)

I've never had any problems with TPG.

Same here.

just don't spend any time on the phone to their fucking useless customer service.

If I wanted to speak to a call centre in india who didn't know how the internet worked however, they'd be the first people I would call.

i recall that was one of your problems with sm3dw for the little man.

Main problem with Captain Toad is it wasn't available to buy for Xmas or with Xmas money!!!

Is that on their website, or were you offered that over the phone?

I'm about to move interstate, and I'm thinking that's worth a look into when I start switching everything over to my new place.

Gez, how's your real-world download speeds with that plan? I could be tempted to move from TPG ADSL for Optus cable.

My 3yo daughter said she wanted to play Nintendo for a few minutes before going to be the other night.

I was so PROUD!!

Turns out she just wanted to play with her Luigi and Mario amiibos.

I was still proud.

Anyway games is good motor skills, just gotta balance it with park time.

The 100mbps a sec thing is something that is not on their website but they 'offered' it to me as a new customer at no extra cost (it's normally $20 extra a month). The default cable speeds are like up to 25 mbps.

I had Optus cable broadband for about 15 years and it was solid the whole time. Moved out, am now on ADSL which is a reasonable speed but drops out frequently.

I thought Optus had stopped signing new customers up to cable broadband... for a quite a while there all mentions of cable vanished from their website. It's clearly back now, so I wonder what changed.

It's called a 'Speed Pack', but they appear to have changed the requirement from being cable to fibre only, which is a bit odd. I'm on the 100Mb speed pack, but the upload's not anywhere near 40Mb, so it's probably slightly different. What are your upload speeds like?

Optus Cable is now officially 'NBN', that's what changed.

So whats the best internet provider for Melbourne? Going to have to get internet hooked up to my new place.

It really depends on what's available to you. Check if you have NBN or cable at your address. NBN is best due to better upload speed.

http://www.nbnco.com.au/connect-home-or-business/check-your-address.html

If you have NBN, you can get it from a few different providers.

If not, check for cable through Telstra and Optus:

http://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/home-broadband

http://register.bigpond.com/check-availability.do

If you don't have either, ADSL2+ is the next option. You can get that from anywhere. I don't have an opinion on which ISP is best. Maybe someone else does. Reputation wise, it's TPG for cheap, Internode for good service.

The Target deal is probably the best at the moment. $499 with three games: http://www.target.com.au/p/playstat...-second-son-little-big-planet-bundle/57256443

If you prefer more games, the EB bundles for $598 might be good for you if any of the game combos tickle your fancy: https://ebgames.com.au/featured/console-hardware/ps4

The best recent deal was when Ebay had a 10% off "pay and pickup" or whatever, you could get a PS4 with three games for $399 from Dick Smith. Nothing like that around at the moment that I can see.

Thanks!! Ooh, that Target deal is quite attractive - those are three games I'd actually want to have with the platform :) [since I've played TLoU and don't really need a HD version of it to re-play it some day]
