If anyone has suggestions for a good PC laptop that's around 1k then I'm all ears by the way.
I have a few in mind but I'm guessing you're in no real rush so you're probably better off waiting for the Sandy Bridge based laptops and then give them some time to come down in price. Unlike desktops, jumps in CPU power are going to add a lot to the gaming potential of laptops.

I'm not in a rush no, but I'd be interested to hear your suggestions. If the right thing popped up I'd be inclined to make the jump.

I've got my eyes on the m11x from Alienware, and approved by the trusty Chris Remo.

As a recent Mac convert, it's got the tinker-free inclusiveness I want from a PC; is small but powerful; the display can be toggled between the GPU and on-board graphics to save on battery when not gaming; and it has HDMI out so I can play it on my telly.

When looking at a PC for gaming, I consider what games I want to play. For the next 12 months or so, I'm looking at a bunch of Telltale stuff and Portal 2, so the m11x suits me to a tee. I might also take the plunge on Civ V and will jump on the Starcraft 2 wagon when the Protoss campaign releases, and I can see both games fitting the personal nature of a laptop quite well.

They start at around $1300, and are plenty customizable. Dell had a 10% discount over christmas that expired, but a bit of googling will give a discount code for around 8% off.

I thought I'd be concerned about the screen size being too small - it's a smidge under 12 inches but I'm used to my 13.3" Macbook and don't want a large laptop anyway.

It might be because they had to modify his tag when he chose to start wearing his obnoxious gang colours

You'll get better if you go closer to $1500, but this one was $1099 (+shipping) on Catch of the Day the other day: http://www.onlinecomputer.com.au/product_info.php?products_id=4509

You can get a dual core version of the same thing for $1100: http://www.onlinecomputer.com.au/product_info.php?products_id=4444

This G51 has a CPU that is two gens old but the GPU is faster (yet older) than the GT425 in the above machines and it comes at a decent price: http://www.logicalblueone.com.au/store/227-g51vx-rx05-.html

There's this MSI: http://www.onlinecomputer.com.au/product_info.php?products_id=4412

HP DV6: http://store.9289.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=265_266&products_id=9121

Even cheaper DV6: http://store.9289.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=265_266&products_id=4967

The new laptop CPUs are probably going to be awesome though. I'd wait a little.

I've had my eye on one of these as well. I've got an almost 5-year old Thinkpad that's really showing its age, and is basically useless for games anyways. The m11x has a ton of power in that little package, and I'm totally willing to look past the tiny screen when I can just plug it into my HDTV when I'm at home.

My only problem is that the $1300 model is only with an i3 processor. Just upgrading the chip can push the price up as high as $1800, which I'm not willing to pay for an 11" screen.

I'd be interested to hear some first-hand impressions from people though.

How do these compare to the (what I would consider) base model 'gaming' Macbook Pro for $1400? http://store.apple.com/au_edu_94060/configure/MC374X/A?mco=MTc0NjkwMjg

I am genuinely interested by the way. I'd like to get an idea of what sort of bang for the buck I'm going to get (or not get in the case of the Macbook).

That one has a slow integrated GPU (320M, not to be confused with the GT320M which is faster) and an old gen CPU (Core 2 duo as opposed to i5/i7 etc). It would be a good deal slower than any of the options I listed.

An excellent resource for figuring out laptop gaming performance is this chart: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html and the rest of the site in general. You can click on a GPU for more information and look for benchmarks for specific laptops etc. You'll note for example that the 320M in the MBP can't even hit 30fps on low settings on Mafia II, whereas the GT425 in the first two laptops I linked can get 30fps on high.

I can't recommend anything in the way of gaming laptops as I don't keep an eye on anything in that area. I can, however, comment on that MacBook Pro for gaming as I have one with very similar specs.

If you plan to run boot camp and use Windows 7 to game, it's waste of time. Unless something has drastically changed since I last booted into Windows 7 on it, it runs like dogshit. It can barely handle basic tasks, let alone run a game well.

I'm not sure what any of the native SteamPlay games are like on it, I've never bothered trying. I did try and run WoW on it though and the results weren't pretty; I turned all the settings down and it couldn't maintain a decent framerate.

It would be interesting to see how AMDs new CPU/GPU combo in a laptop actually goes. It might honestly be worth waiting for one of those. However going by how long it's taking AMD, that could be in 2020.

Even the new AMD cpu in a netbook seems like it has some grunt behind it.

AMD haven't been competitive in mobile CPUs for so long. It's hard to imagine them completely knocking it out of the park on the first attempt. I don't think that space particularly needs competition either, it's getting hammered by netbooks and tablets which keeps the prices reasonable.

I never saw it... and despite being so enthusiastic about it (mainly due to Daft Punk's involvement) before release I'm strangely nonplussed.

I loved it, saw it at IMAX 3D in Melbourne and some of the
chase parts with the bikes and the planes
blew me away.

Story was decent too, look forward to the inevitable sequels.

Apparently a guy strangled a girl in Melbourne and took her handbag but the police won't say anything because he was Indian. Yeah, just let this scumbag run around attacking women but let's not say anything it might look racist! The police here are a joke.

So today I picked up the collector's edition of Dragon Age: Origins for 360, and I come home to the news that all the DLC is going for 50% off on XBLA.

My religiousness now extends to 'there might be deities who exist for no other purpose than to get one guy in Australia to play Dragon Age'.

I've named my new god 'Biowaggggh'.

My friend was raped by an aboriginal and they were told by the police "not to bother" about filing charges. It happens everywhere. U_U

Well i haven't heard of that happening anywhere. That is disgusting but i think it's a very isolated issue.

It just doesn't make sense really. What do you think would look worse? Charging an indigenous person with rape when they have evidence? Or just ignoring the fact that someone was raped because of potential claims of racism?

Same as the other incident. If it's true then it's incredibly stupid by the police in so many ways.

I'm confused.

I don't want to get the guy in trouble because the cops said to not say anything, but whatever it's not under law or anything. They wanted info from him and when talking they said they haven't informed news or anything about it because the guy was Indian and racial issues/sensitivity blah blah blah. I think if a guy is attacking people they should know. I don't give a damn if he's white, black or batman.

It's enough to take someone out of an article midway to bitch about it on a web forum.

Hahaha. Yep. Good ideas. Thanks for the feedback.

But they charged the guy to the full extent of the law, no?

Just pre-ordered my 3DS from Amazon for US$250 + US$25 shipping to Australia! Get in now, as I'm sure they won't be shipping to Australia for long. They only seem to have the Blue one up for now, though.

Didn't even know you could order stuff like that from Amazon to Australia. I'd pre-order one but the region locking seems bad. I'd have to import every single game. A UK one might be better for me. Probably cheaper and can run both imported PAL and AU games.

As I said, I doubt the Australian orders will work for long. I think Amazon forgot to enable the flag to disable foreign shipping for the time being.

And yes, it does mean importing every game, but they will be cheapest there too, and you don't have to wait the weeks or months they typically take to translate to all the European languages.
