Stargate box sets always make me sad. I want it, then I look over at my shelf with the mix and match patchwork selection of seasons I already have, and I can't bring myself to buy it.

I know what you mean :(

I don't know why I want to buy these boxsets. I've already seen the episodes through other means, and have no desire to go watch them again, but the idea of owning boxsets of my favourite childhood shows is so tempting...

Has to be a boxset though. Individual seasons can fuck off.
I'd rebuy Arrested Development in a heartbeat if it came as a proper boxset

Vook I know what you mean, man.

I'm now starting the fourth year of Funny Webcomic - at the end of next week I'll be posting the 800th comic on the site - and the time I have for it is diminshing every year. It's a combination of increasing work commitments and the extra time I want to put into the comic nowadays to make something I could hopefully be proud of.

But every night as I stumble into bed at whatever time of the morning because I had to spend an extra hour redrawing a face or perfecting a fart joke i just wish I had more time to do other stuff too...and it's a real pain to realise your limits and commitments.

I'd love it if I had huge traffic and an audience large enough that would mean I could spend more time on doing my own creative work, but there's no easy shortcut to that besides keep doing it every day and building the road you want to walk on one brick at a time.

For what it's worth, I think you do real quality stuff, so don't beat yourself up about not being able to make more than you can.

I know that feeling, I push myself to the limits pretty much each day. I don't go asleep until I'm basically so drained to do anything but it. My site is my second job nearly, but I just love doing it and I hope it can lead me to greater things. Though, I don't get to do as many fart jokes as your good self.

I'll just keep on doing what I'm doing as best I can, people seem to like that from what others have said here today.

Now to write some news..

lol, that's awesome! But see, my worry is that all the kanji and the different meanings/ pronunciations will get jumbled up in my head and I won't be able to speak any language. Heck, whenever I'm with Japanese speaking people my brain just reverts back to this weird Japanese-English combination.

I'd really like to do Chinese conversation though (I can already say wo jiao Shannon. I'm so pro).
You're already as good as Jintor at mandarin!

But yeah, confusing pronunciations will probably be the second biggest hurdle, the biggest being learning the billions of characters. Grammar wise I think chinese is more simple compared to japanese, but I'm not sure since I haven't experienced learning chinese from scratch.

Yeah, I've heard that Chinese grammar is basically the same as English. Korean is supposed to be the hardest language for English speakers to learn, so Chinese should be okay compared to that :p Are your family Chinese?
Does anyone know if its possible to extend your degree and do more electives?

lol you're right, the grammar is pretty similar to English grammar (I just went through a few sentences in my head).

Yeah my parents are from Hong Kong, but I was born here. I went to a few years of chinese school as a kid so my chinese skillz are actually a lot better than the average aussie born asian.

For extra units, I think you can just ask them to add credit points for you to enrol, or something like that, I don't know how UQ does it. I just lied to uni admin and said I did too many electives "by accident" and I needed extra credit points to enrol in units related to my major.

It's ok, I just have a thing for learning languages, shanshan probably does too.

Through all my years at school I've done Italian, French, Latin, Japanese and...Ancient Greek lol. And I don't remember any of it! Well, except Japanese.

How, uh, 'above board' are those shows you went to, Bern?

I hope you didn't just contribute to the sex trade ._.
With the exclusion of glass clinking, balloon popping and getting caught in the crossfire of a gushing bottle of soda water, there was a metaphorical glass wall between us and the, uh... 'entertainers'.

To reiterate, these women denigrated themselves for our entertainment to the tune of 500B - that's about $17 USD. We were likely their only 'hit' for the night and I doubt many people return for more of that sort of thing. Kind of a 'scratch that one off the bucket list' thing.

In a conversation with a British lady who had also been to a show recently, we lamented how depressing the situation was. I don't know the stories behind how each of the ladies present ended up in that job, and as a cash-laden westerner, I have the benefit of ignorance (as sad as that reality may be).

Forgot about the Apple event.

Moving Friday, woo. Now to start packing, not woo. Internet is sorted thank fuck. I don't know what I'd do without the pornography.

On another note, I scored several speakers and I'd like to whip up a 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound system for my PS3/Wii. Any ideas how much an amp would set me back?

Truly as much as or as little as you are prepared to spend. You can pick up an entry level Onkyo, Yamaha or Pioneer amp from JB for <$300 that'll do 5.1 well enough (just check that your speakers ohm ratings are within the amps specification. Don't worry about the wattage too much - they'll be a 'pretend' 2ch driven 75w-100w anyway).

Otherwise save your pennies and buy something like a Yamaha Aventage or Anthem receiver that'll do everything, though you're looking at $1000-$1800 for one of those bad boys.

I didn't take into account scaling or conversion (both of which your TV will do better anyway), or the price of some speaker wire and/or banana plugs.

Those entry level receivers will just do the basics, as you would expect, with basic DACS and basic decoding support.

For the Wii, make sure it supports Dolby Pro Logic II. Many of the cheap ones don't, I believe.

I'm not an audiophile, I just wanted a cheap set that would do the job for PS3 and Wii, so I recently got the Z-5500 set from Logitechshop for $290 and really like them, but it appears they've sold out (they've been phasing them out, apparently). They have the replacement model (Z906) for $399, though, so that might be something to look for at an entry level price for something that suits the Wii.

Jason Culina let go due to long term injury

wow

Yeah, was big news on the football forum I run... the way I read it, Branko looks to have been sacked for potentially knowing that Jason was more injured than he original let on before signing the contract.... although you have to question the Jets medical procedures if they didn't pick it up.

Also, the prevailing theory is that Ernie has already been lined up to take over.

I don't know a lick of Korean, no more than you'd pick up in a few days in a foreign country (and since most South Koreans speak excellent English, virtually none), but it seemed like the grammatical structure was pretty similar to me? It's based on the letters making sounds which make up words, just like English. It's not tonal like Thai and doesn't have characters that are actually words like in Chinese. Compared to them as an English speaker with almost no other language skills, it seems pretty easy. Most Westerners say German is probably the most difficult language to pick up.

Plus you're supposed to be able to learn it in a day (and be able to understand it in a week), wasn't that the big selling point of the current Korean language when it was invented?

I will pick up sim city 2000 after work from gog. I look forward to building lots of 4x4 squares and having it run 24/7 as i slowly create the most badass fucking city known to man.

Although part of me feels like i can't be bothered after that crazy guy spent all those years building the most efficient city known to man in the sim city games. Curse that crazy son of a bitch.

I am not interested in iPhone 4S, but I am interested in how well the voice assistant works with Australian accents, given that Microsoft took forever to get Kinect voice support out (or is it not even out yet?).

Just read the ping pong stories on the last page. My wife and I got roped into going to one (while on our honeymoon). Those poor, poor budgies and fish. As for negotiating payment, my advice is to bring along a South African. Sure, the Irish are good fighters and better negotiators, but those Saffas play for keeps.

I'll be getting an iphone 4S for my wife. She is desperate need of a smartphone since her workplace has shitty internet and something with huge capacity for taking pictures of the cat and her garden.

At this rate, my current contract runs out just in time for an iPhone 5. Neither of us has any interest in trying android or WP7.

Apple fail

Honestly biggest fail ever. The market is significantly different to when the 3GS came out and a revision was good enough to keep it number 1

This time, given its 3 months late and android is outselling it, nope

I agree with the shares plummeting like they did

They will sell, but they won't sell anywhere near what they think they will. It will not be iphone 4 again thats for sure

$200 on a contract markot

its the same price as the old iphone 4

At least apple realized that a smartphone needs a good camera.

lol

this reminds me of a poster at my local camera store 'if your camera makes phone calls, its not a good camera'

edit: Omi yeah i think tinkler thinks he has been played on Jason and given the family connection I would as well

Culina could miss THREE seasons they reckon

Choc, this is the Commodore series II of the iPhone 4. The next release will be the big iPhone 5 release. Obviously they've made this as an incremental release to fix bugs.

It'll still be huge, but not as big as the iPhone 3G and iPhone 4.

no doubt cod, its a revision as i said its just not going to have queues going out the door up the street for 5 months like the ip4 did.

but given where teh competition is, its a lot further advanced than 15 months ago and a lot of people are picking android up, not just nerds as well.

i think Apple has really screwed it BUT that siri shit is awesome. Expect an android to haev it next month :p

Android already has pretty decent voice recognition, just not the integration.

That said, I don't use it and have no interest in using it.

Oh, I know its with a contract >.< I thoguht the price was a big surprise at first, but then I remembered its USA stuff. $200 for an iphone would have been the huge news that would have made the lack of iphone 5 worth it. But now its just a slightly upgraded phone. (LIKE ALL IPHONES LOLOLOL!)

the problem is that other than siri (and is siri confirmed for Australia?) the phone is revision and people were expecting and apple hinted at a major change this year

Well people only have themselves to blame for setting themselves up.

And there's a long history of apple keynotes being followed up with people going OMG FAIL APPLE DOOMED and glossing over things that end up changing the world.

For the original, "Who wants internet browser in your phone?" but now who can live without it.

Then "Why bother with GPS when in car GPS systems are better" but now there are so many location aware things we take for granted.

Siri is the real star of the show here, I think. Good question about Australian availability, I really need to know before I place my order down. The wife and I have been waiting for this announcement to upgrade our respective phones - she's looking to go to an Android device. Any recommendations?

Does siri really need a 4S to run? Will be interesting to watch the jailbreaking scene, I suspect it will run on the 4 just fine.

The newest Nexus phone is supposed to be announced at a Samsung event in a week, so hold off to see if that eventuates. The Nexus phones are always the flagship phones, but they are quite vanilla (personally I like that).

If it doesn't, or you don't want that, look at the Galaxy S II.

Love the shit out of my Galaxy SII... only downer for me is that the battery life is pretty fucking awful. :)

As for the previous paragraphs of Apple love... that is a lot to credit Apple with considering they are just the company that popularises a lot of that tech. Rather than actually innovating so to speak. I mean, my old school Nokia whatever did the vast majority of what iOS/Droid does now years ago.

Gazunta

Member
Oh absolutely Omi, but I don't know if 'popularising' is the right word for it. I need a word that means "presenting existing tech (and combining it with new ideas) in such a way that it works without needing to know how it works, in order to drive up demand and potential for use'

Not every Apple product is a good one, personally I can't see the point of the Macbook Air, but they hit a lot of home runs.

I don't know why anyone would be surprised or underwhelmed by the 4S. As with every year, rampant speculation and photoshop impressions lead people to believe Apple is going to do what every other phone manufacturer does and completely change their handset as soon as possible after releasing the last one.

The 4S is exactly what I thought it would be. There is absolutely no reason for Apple to dump the retina display and chassis that came with the 4 - these are great and by no means invalidated by being a 15 months old instead of 12. The A5 processor was a given after the iPad 2 and while Siri came out of left field, the biggest changes have already been known quantity for months with iOS 5.

Many people constantly expect Apple to reinvent everything and then complain when they release new devices every year, making their old ones out of date. You can't have it both ways and I think out of all the smart phone manufacturers, Apple at least puts some thought into what they want to change and when. It's not just a matter of rushing a completely new phone to market every year ahead of the competition to secure some sales via contracts.
