The conversation over the past half-page or so takes me back to the days when I surfed on a 28.8k modem and GoEureka was my default search engine. Do you remember the anticipation you felt as you waited for a picture to load one pixel row at a time?

Those days were magical, in a primitive, gross kind of way.
Did you know that if you moved your mouse back and forth quickly that the image would load faster?

We did in highschool! Although it only worked sometimes D:

I remember 56k using goconnect along with the hide the fucking bar "addon" doing things that can't be mentioned in this thread.

The good ol days!

Dark Souls looks so fucking amazing. Productivity is pretty low today anyway (a week off plus an assignment has had that effect), but having found a solid stream of someone playing it has pretty much ended me.

I remember a mate once bringing around a floppy disk filled with fake nudes of Gillian Anderson and Alicia Silverstone. That was a magical day.

Pfft. Our high school only had one internet-enabled computer. And shit loaded so slow everyone just used IRC on it. If it was available.

Warcraft II and Mechwarrior 2 on modem-to-modem connection. Now that's the good ol' days. Except when it crashed you had to call the person and arrange it all again... Maybe notsomuch.

Am I right in recalling that Games.On.Net wasn't very good? For some reason it sticks in my mind that they wrote a bunch of low scoring reviews for hits.
Article was bad. He should feel bad for trying to write it.

Back in the day the Internode Gaming Network was mostly run by a group of Internode guys and some community members. It was very laid back and more of a community gaming orientated site and not as much about news and reviews.

A few years ago they re-branded it to Games.On.Net and eventually got Bennett on board. He made a lot of changes, adding a lot of new weekly features and tonnes of reviews and video content. While it was good to see GON growing a bit and getting more hits, quite a large chunk of the community, mostly people who had been around since near the beginning, started to complain about the quality of some articles and some of the crazy review decisions.

For example, Gran Turismo 5 got a 3/5 from Bennett and his review pretty much only covered the negative aspects of the game. There was a huge thread on the forums about it filled with quite a lot of backlash.

They also split the reviews up in to 2 categories: Uber Reviews and 2-minute Reviews. It was all well and good, but then sometimes a huge blockbuster AAA game would come out and get a 5 paragraph 2-minute review instead of a 2 page Uber Review.

He also didn't seem to handle the criticism very well. He would be snarky and act like a smart arse when people would question or criticise him and he often used Twitter to have stupid arguments with people.

I think his main problem is he gets locked in to certain games or genres and then compares everything to them instead of looking at games objectively.

For whatever reason, those two names blurred together and I read them collectively as Julia Gillard. I don't know why.

This post made me google 'Julia Gillard nudes'

This could be interesting.

From the media I've seen, it really does look like an updated version of Demon's Souls. Graphics, models, animation, even the UI are all very familiar. I got some enjoyment out of Demon's Souls but couldn't find the time to properly progress through the game before other things came out and it fell by the wayside.

Dark Souls looks more interesting to me because of the open-world aspect. The atmosphere in Demon's Souls was great but the gauntlet-style levels left me cold, especially when I felt the game needed an in-depth knowledge of some very complicated systems (tendencies especially, not to mention skills and equipment gathering). It's hard to really immerse yourself in it when you're having to play it and a wiki at the same time to get anywhere.

I may give it a whirl but if it requires the same level of wiki-fu, I'm afraid I may not stay for the long haul.

I used to read Internode Gaming whatever/games.on.net when I was with Internode and played stuff on their servers a lot but I stopped including it in my gaming news feeds because they never, ever quoted sources for anything. It was infuriating, because they were constantly re-publishing information without giving any credit or links for further information.

Yeah it was pretty amateur back in the day, annoying as hell.

TBH I only use the forums, the file mirror and the gaming servers. I don't really pay much attention to the news articles.

I refuse to believe this. Rule 34 alone makes it an inevitability. Just like without looking, I would put money on the fact that somewhere on the Internet is a site dedicated to equivalent photographs of the Queen.

Yeah, I wiki'd my way through Demon's Souls as well. Mainly for weapon choice and upgrade path. I never got that pure bladestone drop though;_;

I still thoroughly enjoyed the game, but I'm glad the extensive wiki pages exist.

I remember blowing up thumbnail sized naughty pics until they were pixellated on an old yellowing CRT.

I also remember my mate who was the first to get a computer (a 486 or something) had Leisure Suit Larry. That seemed pretty raunchy.

You haven't seen old porn until you've opened up a 256-colour JPG that's been dithered to display on a 16-colour screen. Never mind the fact that said image would take around 10 minutes to decode on an 8MHz machine.

Desperate times, my friends.

And then, in my case, printed on a mono dot matrix printer.

Desperate times indeed!

Jeez. I found my stash of crappy print outs when I went back home last month in the cavity underneath my desk drawers. Shit was super low resolution and washed out as hell. Still got me aroused so it stands the test of time.

Somehow, I had some pictures that were already in black and white anyway, so they actually printed out pretty well. Ahem.

Edit: I now have (a portion of) this as my iPhone wallpaper:
2007-309-lg.jpg

Everyone else should, too. It looks awesome. Unfortunately I couldn't fit both a horstachio *and* fizzlybear on the screen at the same time.

$400+ electrical bill and a half hour walk (plus train ride) to check out a place in Thornbury. Plus I'm tired as fuck and pretty sure I'm getting sick. And I have no money.

I can't really disagree with you at all Agyar in regards to crediting sources. Also used to irritate me :)

News is pretty solid these days, is a fair assumption most people on gaf are not the target audience for the news covered anyway. Content sure, delivery (or timing) - not so much.

I'm happy to let you guys know if we are running competitions or events here (AusGAF) if you want. My intention is not to advertise but simply let gamers in Australia actually have access to some decent prizes for a change. For the most part we a strictly PC gaming community.

If you do have any issues with the editorial content or sources just hit up Tim Colwill directly. He is the Editor these days and took over after Bennett moved on to GameSpy. Tim is always happy to have a chat :)

As for the free/public files and our servers Jambo mentioned. Yeah, we nail that one.

You could try the High Speed profile, should kick it up a notch!

Yeh! I don't have the power to switch my profiles yet, that's still in Internodes hands, so the next step is to talk to them and.. point out that i've paid for 2 months of internet and all the set up fees.. and am only getting proper internet now...

Really? That's odd, you should be able to change it under your account settings at www.on.net

Hopefully you can get all of it credited forward, they're normally pretty good about it.

I don't understand the Bennett hate, Diablo III would be great if it were made into an FPS. While we're at it, so would lots of games:

The Sims, Fifa 2013, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Tiger Woods PGA Tour, Tetris, Braid, Kirby's Mass Attack, Outrun Coast to Coast, Civ IV, Microsoft Train Simulator and Disgaea are all prime examples of games that would be much better if you were looking through the main character's eyes wielding a shotgun.

Same spot or have you moved?

BTW Because my area was connecting to a RIM, the best I could *ever* get was (from memory) around 300kb/s. Pretty sure I've earned the right to have a fat pipe.

Never mind every single Sierra game. Navigating that tentacle maze in Space Quest 2 would be a cinch.

Almost happens in the tiger woods games (not sure about current, havent played one since like 2006) where theres the SPEED GOLF!!!! you hit your ball then it goes to FP mode and you run to your ball so you can hit it again
