Sydney's housing bubble has inexplicably managed to derail straight into anti-chinese racism. good times. thankfully afaik seems to be some minor fringe lunatics

Chinese people have been in Australia since what, the early 1800s?

You would think that if a takeover was on the cards they might have made a move before 215 years had passed.

Maybe a takeover by buying Sydney properties is a secretly clever plan that took centuries to develop. Thankfully rise up Australia has it all figured out.

Holy fucking shit. (beware, it's Bolt):
One side - the “patriots” - are people too angry and too infested by haters and Nazi admirers. We cannot let such extremists define which immigrants and creeds are permissible in this civil and tolerant country.

The other side - led by socialists - are people too angry and too infested by haters and enemies of free speech and free assembly. We cannot let such extremists define what freedoms are permissible in this civil and tolerant country.
I didn't know it was a Bolt article until after I clicked on it, read a little then *had* to see who the author was. Fuck's sake.
In particular, those of the Left who attack the Abbott Government and police for allegedly overreacting to Islamic extremism should be more understanding.

The danger isn’t just the lives that will be lost when, inevitably, some jihadist succeeds. Also dangerous is in the damage done by any blowback.
Who gave this racist dimwit a computer?

I love how Bolt has the audacity to position himself as a voice of reason sitting square in the middle.

The man could not be more right wing if he tried, His anti science crusade of the better part of the last decade puts him fair and square somewhere near Ayn Rand

So Grahame Morris, chief Howard Ballwasher, has gone completely off the deep end. On the Irish:

“I love the Irish… but these are people who can’t grow potatoes. They’ve got a mutant lawn weed as their national symbol and they can’t verbalise the difference between tree and the number three. But, and then all of a sudden, Australia has to follow suit.”

Irish Independant

So he's firmly in the no camp I imagine, and live on Sky news!

Strange this has barely made the news here, it seems to be blowing up in Ireland. Probably all over the news here in the morning. Gotta love those racists that start sentences with "I love... but..."

It's weird how some people, including Tony Abbott think it's totally okay to be overtly racist towards the Irish.

Also this is going to air on ABC in a week.

I don't know how many people here would still be interested in a series on the Rudd/Gillard thing but it may be interesting.

Has interviews with a number of Labor figures, including Rudd and Gillard.

Wow. Talk about pathetic, completely unrelated arguments.

"Why would we follow the Irish on same-sex marriage? They can't even produce a good cricket team!" or whatever. Fucking "commentators"... particularly right-wing ones.

oh im sure he is

Eh, I'm not going to put any effort into defending him. Just generally, there are so many arseholes everywhere, I don't really need to go digging for more.

Can someone explain this to me?

Nope. I found this explanation on The Guardian live blog:

"A normal person may ask, if the government has been saying “clear the decks to get this measure passed”, why it would vote against getting the measure passed?

Well, that’s simple. A bunch of government MPs want to speak to the bill in order to circulate the speeches in their electorates telling small business how much the government loves them. One must be seen to love small business. You can’t get credit for good deeds if no one sees you doing good deeds."

I can't believe they're getting away with claiming that the Opposition is trying to stifle debate on an "urgent" bill with bipartisan support. Talking about literally anything else would be a better use of our time.

Nothing new.

A political move from Shorten? Have to disagree, we're in uncharted territory.

Actually, when you consider how long it's been since Abbott became opposition leader and pretty much said no to everything, general politicking from opposition feels pretty new to me.

Cept same sex marriage apparently.

That time is needed to bafflingly re-litigate measures that already have bipartisan support.

He knows how to play the game in the back room, but I think prior to SSM, there has been little evidence that he knows how to do it in public.
Yeah I mean Bill fucking Shorten just bothered to call the government's bluff. Where's that been for the last few years?

Okay, that explains it more clearly than anything else thus far. Thanks!

Yeah, getting more detailed; I suspect the Coalition wanted more mileage out of this than Shorten was going to give them. Lots of MPs wanted to get up in Parliament and talk about how great this plan was and how it needed to pass ASAP and etc etc.

They reckon they've got a winner in terms of popularity with this policy so they need to keep it front and centre and portray Labor as an impediment. There's also some other Bills in Parliament at the moment they don't want to talk about (SSM) since they're on the wrong side of that issue in terms of public option, so this is a good one for them to talk about.

Of course, that's why this was smart politics from Shorten. Even though the Senate won't sit until next week to pass it, there's really no reason this couldn't have passed the House today beyond the government wanting its attaboys (except this nebulous idea of debate, but if both major parties support it there's really no debate to be had), and this all makes that abundantly clear.

The narrative the LNP and their base are going with is Shorten attempting to stifle debate. Even though the bill has bipartisan support and the Prime Minister has insisted it be passed ASAP. This is absolutely a stunt, but voting on the damn bill and debating bills that actually need to be debated is a much better use of the parliament's time and money. At least by playing with them the Labor Party have shown unequivocally that their talk of urgency was all hot air. They know this bill's a winner and they're going to milk it until close-of-business.

Ahhh... that's a lot better. That's kind of what I gathered when reading through the tweets about it today, but couldn't have been too sure. Libs want their circle-jerk to continue over this, but Shorten obviously wants to cut that time down as much as possible.

This, on top of the same-sex marriage bill that he raised have both been master strokes IMO.

but Shorten obviously wants to cut that time down as much as possible.

I wouldn't word it like this, he's no saint. He's just maneuvering to get his own political mileage out of it, and trying to take the wind out of the Libs sails when they finally came up with a popular measure. It's was a good move and all, but he didn't do it because he likes efficiency.

World class trolling on behalf of the ALP. I haven't seen Question Time, Buy I imagine the first question was "Why did you vote against your own bill?"

It's weird how some people, including Tony Abbott think it's totally okay to be overtly racist towards the Irish.

Forgot about those. Didn't Abbott embarrass himself with his St. Patrick's Day Message and I'm sure he made another Irish joke a few years ago comparing the ALP to an Irishman who lost his money betting on a horse race and then lost more betting on the replay. Lovely human beings.

I'm not sure I'd call Irish a race.

You should, Irish racial discrimination in years past was incredibly widespread. English people were analysing their skull shapes as evidence that they weren't white. Not to mention all those "no blacks, no Irish." signs that were common in early America and parts of the UK.
