I picked the right time to move back to Melbourne by the looks of it - dodged Black Saturday by a few days when I moved back to Queensland a few years ago. Lived in Toowoomba most of my life - East Creek loses its shit if you get any sort of heavy rain, but you never get the sort of flash flooding like yesterday. No doubt it's going to cause more damage than 1974 in Brisbane and Ipswich, just by virtue of the fact that the populations are so much bigger.

If I know my geography, Bargara is near Bundaberg, about 5 hours north of Brisbane.

That area, along with many others has been flooded significantly. I'm sure your friends are okay though. No deaths reported from there.

Looking at the list of Ipswich streets (WHY DON'T THEY JUST MAKE THE GIS MAPS AVAILABLE ONLINE DURING THE EMERGENCY - GOD THE IPSWICH CITY COUNCIL IS USELESS), my Mum's street is subject to partial flooding.

Only problem is that it doesn't specify where since she lives on a long goddamn street that rises and falls across some big hills. She doesn't appear to be near other streets that are named as flood-projected, which is a mercy.

The flood in her area is meant to peak between 11pm and 1am tonight. We'll see how things go.

Want to go for a drive out near the river to see how bad it might get in my suburb, but I don't want to risk it :lol

Times like this it's best not to head out for a gander, aside from putting yourself at risk you can also get in the way of emergency workers. Always ticks me off when there's a bushfire near my home and people decide they just have to come and see it, which pisses the CFS off no end.

I tell you what though, Lake Eyre is going to be freaking incredible this year.

Looking at the list of Ipswich streets (WHY DON'T THEY JUST MAKE THE GIS MAPS AVAILABLE ONLINE DURING THE EMERGENCY - GOD THE IPSWICH CITY COUNCIL IS USELESS), my Mum's street is subject to partial flooding.

Only problem is that it doesn't specify where since she lives on a long goddamn street that rises and falls across some big hills. She doesn't appear to be near other streets that are named as flood-projected, which is a mercy.

The flood in her area is meant to peak between 11pm and 1am tonight. We'll see how things go.

Does she live on one of the hills?

I dunno, might be best to bring her down to Brissie, just in case.

got up this morning to constant heavy rain, considered sleeping in, finally decided to get up and have a shower, looked out the back and saw the backyard was starting to flood, didn't think much of it, had breakfast, caught a train to work, worked for a couple of hours, got ordered to leave, turns out the city was being evacuated, evacuated the city via train, train station was PACKED, cramped on train for half an hour, train got terminated well before my station, stranded in a town that was starting to get flooded (and soon also evacuated i found out later), found a random bus that took me to the next town, then caught another bus, on the way saw streets and businesses flooded, drove over bridges that were almost under water (got super paranoid the bridge would get washed away while we were on it), got to my stop, got picked up by my dad and drove the rest of the way home.

when i got home i could see how high up the water had gotten by the debris that was stuck to the wall. about 1-1.5 inches on the outer wall. another 2 or more inches and the water would've flooded the house. now sitting at home drinking a beer glad that i don't have to go to work tomorrow (in a part of the city that has a high chance of being flooded).

moral of the story? sleeping in is always the better option.
