Honestly speaking, if I could find a clean, unmolested FD RX-7, I'd sell my soul to the devil to daily drive it. I don't care if it's unreliable as fnck(most people just don't know how to maintain it), that it drinks oil like it drinks gas, or that it's super uncomfortable to drive. It's basically my dream car.
But realistically speaking, I don't have the time nor knowledge to replace the apex seals or the motor every 2 years. Parts are super hard to come by and if they do, they are super expensive. Maintenance is relatively cheap but you can't just take it to a Mazda dealership these days as they don't work on them anymore IIRC, you'd have to find a rotary specialist to work on it. Basically what I'm saying is, the RX-7 is just a very impractical car to own. You'd have to be a total rotary nut to own one.
Now the same thing can be said if I somehow end up with a Porsche instead of the new Miata, but at least it's not a rotary and the only prohibitive factor are the price for parts and labor to get things working. I can just take it to a Porsche dealer and they can get it back up working in no time, whereas with the RX-7, I'd have to phone Takahashi Ryosuke to send me some parts and find a reputable rotary shop to work on it.
Oh btw, have you seen this?
