Automotive Discussion Thread | OT2 | Zero to pointless fighting faster than a GT86

All this car porn, and I have my mind firmly set on a compact sedan.

Honda's gonna reveal the '16 Civic sedan next week, but I fear it's going to have a CVT, which will suck. The '16 Chevy Cruze looks good AND it has six forward gears.

It's almost certain to have a CVT; Honda is pushing hard in that direction. Fairly soon only the Pilot and Odyssey will have conventional automatics.

Are you considering any other compact sedans? The Civic is a great car, but unless the new version gets a huge dynamic upgrade, you'll probably have more fun in a Mazda 3 (although the Civic will certainly have more interior room).

EDIT FOR UK GAF: we're heading to London in the spring and are planning on renting a car to see some areas to the West. I've never driven in England before - other then the obvious switch to RHD, anything else I should be immediately aware of?

Pretty much everyone is shit at driving. And you can't shoot people either.

Honestly? No 'jumping' red lights (although I think we should be able to), roundabouts are hilarious fun (just floor it when there's a space).

How far west are you headed? London being in the east and all that, you'll spend a lot of time on the road...

The wife is knee deep in travel guides right now, but we're thinking of doing this loop over the course of a few days.

Civic is probably going to be turbo as well I believe. CVT is a given, just wait for the Si and get that instead, 6 speed standard with no CVT in sight. :)

Ah gotcha - for some reason I though you were basing yourself in London (my brain isn't working). Lots of motorway and dual carriageways, they'll be fine. Although whenever you come over, there will be roadworks aplenty, and probably speed cameras. I know we all enjoy our "special relationship", but I have no idea if speeding offences are transferable - but honestly there's little point booting it anywhere, as you'll just get stuck behind a convoy of truckers, or a hoard of caravans - or a convoy of truckers behind a hoard of caravans. :)

We do have the best quality potholes of any EU country, so do look out for them.
Very easy to get a puncture.

You've picked a nice little tour there though - Bath is very nice, and the Cotswolds are lovely. Don't drive into Oxford though - use the park and ride (carpark and bus) instead, as there's no real public parking anywhere in the centre. Swindon is a bit shit too...

We'll be renting a compact from Sixt, likely. From what I understand 'excessive power' won't be on the menu :)

Oxford is probably going to be a drive-through, really depends on what she fancies. Thanks for all the tips :)

Just for the sake of discussion, let's say this particular vehicle has a clean history and there is nothing wrong with it. Apart from that, how is the 2011 Jetta TDI?

I agree with others. Too many miles for a used VW. Be prepared to perform general maintenance. Electrical components will likely be an issue. Lots of resources out there for working on Jettas though. When was the last timing belt and water pump replacement?

It would sure be nice if Honda built this. Would make up for them keeping the S660 away from North America.

Bentley or not the styling is weak. It reminds me of Porches first foray into the SUV market. The car designers clearly didn't have a clue what they were doing.

That top speed though... I reckon tuning houses will get this thing to 200mph easily.

Sometimes I feel like the proof of concept car designs are impractical but are definitely evocative. Kinda wish they would make more curvy designs vs. exposed suspension and driver.

I wonder how helpful the Oculus would be to show concept cars would be.

I get some of the shit that Honda gets for lacking any current enthusiast offerings but... keeping the s660 away from North America? Has any manufacturer ever sold a kei-sized car here?

I spoke with the guy and got a carfax report. Everything is pretty much good to go. There were no serious problems with it, has a clean history, this guy is wealthy and he just wants to get rid of it.

Regardless of the car's history, how is the 2011 Jetta TDI? or newer TDIs in general? Any personal anecdotes?

There really is a sucker born every minute.

Time to start selling fucked up cars, apparently all I have to do is tell people I'm wealthy, poop out a CarFax report (while failing to mention it's pretty easy to fuck up a car and fix it on the side without Carfax ever knowing) and eaaaasy work.

Fyi if it's actually legit you need to flip it for 8-12k.

Will do man!

Can't wait to smoke all y'all at the track with a sleeper 600hp NC Miata haha.

600 hp Miata would get absolutely devoured by any 450-500 hp Evo at a dragstrip or road course ;)

So I've decided to piss away my warranty on my new 2015 sti by taking it stage 2+

So far the parts I've collected are:
Invidia catted downpipe
Invidia q300 catback
Injector dynamics 1000cc injectors
Cobb fuel pump regulator kit
Grim speed electronic boost control
Perrin heat shield
Ptp lava turbo blanket
Aem cold air intake
Cobb accessport v3
Deuschwerks dw65c fuel pump

I'm pretty much ready to go just need to find the time to install everything and schedule a day at the tuner of my choice.

I'll be sure to post back the day of results etc, wish me luck and hopefully the short block gods stand by me for a little while.

I hope to keep this car for a few years and play with it before sending it off and "growing" up into a real sports car. The sti was something I have always wanted and after 10+ years of hard work I got myself into a position where I can really afford to do what I want with one as far as I want. I really have no interest in the financial sacrifice to take it further than what I have planned.

Anybody have any opinions on modding/chipping a GTI? I haven't even bought one yet but am stuck here reading about them on the internet while I wait for my factory order? Is chipping to Stage 1 generally considered stupid or is it pretty low-risk as far as reliability and engine life go?

He probably didn't get wealthy selling cars for a 1/3 their value. A legit 2011 TDI Jetta for $3,500 is stupid cheap. No rich person "just wants to get rid of a car". And Carfax is a joke, don't give your money to those sleazy fucks.

Performance aside, which is the better buy:

2001 Honda S2000 with about 105k miles for $12,000 miles or an 03 Infiniti G35 with about 111k miles for $11,000?

Or are both examples too high of mileage to be even worth a look?

Asking for a friend... and no this isn't one of those "fakes" lol. I mean I wouldn't mind switching to either car in terms of performance, but real life responsibilities gotta take over, so that means bills and more bills so I'm gonna pass. The only way I'd probably go for it is if some kind of miracle happens between now and the weekend, but that's highly unlikely haha.

What's the alternative to getting a vehicle history report? I imagine a one two of one of those and a mechanic doing a pre-purchase inspection should cover most bases on used cars if not CPO or something?

S2000. By far. The g35 is a POS. Horrible interior and build quality. S2000s was a much higher wuality car. Not to mention its easily one of the all time greatest sports cars EVER.

Fuck I wish I could find a clean S2000 for $12k. Where is this? Is it riced out?

I can't drive stick. :-(

Learn. Easy to learn, difficult to master.

Driving a stick at a decently proficient level is like fucking without a condom, driving an automatic is like fucking with a sheepskin condom.

S2000 is the better car, but check out the valve guides as those are prone to go around that time if they arent already done.

Oh yes! That particular car is on my top 10 wish list and in my fantasy garage. Baby Ferrari, indeed.

Of those two I also like the S2000 although the G35 will be a luxury cruiser in comparison and is certainly not a bad car by any stretch. Both cars are known to last a long time and be relatively trouble free although the S2000 is so much more hard core in terms of comfort, noise and practicality than the G. If you friend can daily an S2000 then I respect him or her! I certainly could not.

Sorry, I don't follow. What's the problem with the price of the iA and iM?

Yeah, if I remember correctly you do get a decent bit of standard equipment like navigation, so not a bad deal as far as new cars go.

Also got the chance to sit in them last weekend and they were more roomy and nicer inside than I thought, but the engines are still way underpowered for my tastes.

It's in Dallas and nah it doesn't look riced out from the pics.

CarFax seems pretty good too: http://www.carfax.com/VehicleHistory/p/Report.cfx?partner=ECL_0&vin=JHMAP11431T003318

Then again we all know how CarFax really is so eh lol.

He's gonna check it out today and if it's good, me and him will take a real good look at it tomorrow.

Lol he's coming from a YJ Wrangler so all he's known in his entire car lifetime is shitty street suspensions hahaha.

I'm actually trying to steer him to a Miata instead, especially since he's never driven a proper high-powered RWD car, but it's his money and all that so eh. I wouldn't have an issue with the G35 but with an AP1 S2K?

I've sent him links from forums and videos about AP1's doing its infamous snap oversteer... so we'll see how responds throughout the day lol.

Yeah I was gonna say its not easy to learn about RWD on an AP1 S2000.

Also im having a hard time letting go of the EVO. There are so little unmolested examples around, and im just so afraid some kid is gonna buy it and destroy it.

I might hang onto it with the E92 and sell off two of my E36s.

Played about 3 hours of Forza 6. It's a blast so far and way better than 5.

Haven't tried too many cars, but think my favorite at the moment is the 2016 Miata tuned to C class. It's very easy to control the slides. Feels like a dance partner on the track.

Yeah, I wish I had kept my blue Evo 9 sometimes. Clean examples are going to hold their value in the future as more people do terrible mods, rack up the mileage, or wreck them.

This is the most perfect analogy.

Exhaust revving of the new 911 3.0TT. It sounds awesome and raw. Love the loud turbos. Also a quick drive video of the car too.

http://www.roadandtrack.com/new-car...-turbo-2017-porsche-911-carrera-s-will-sound/

Wrong! Wrong!!!

ALL WRONG!

Actually not that bad, especially the in-car video. I was beginning to have nightmares about Porsche having a repeat of the new M3. They've done a nice job keeping it similar-ish to the N/A engine, but I'm not really a fan of the artifical pops and crackles on the over-run. You can tell when that's not done naturally and it sounds a little silly.

If you're keeping the Evo, is either of your E36s an M3? Ill buy it if you ship it to me, i really need another E36 M3 in my life.

I learned to drive RWD AND stick on an S2000... Amazing experience that put me ahead of many other drivers

This is the most perfect analogy.

Rawdog life, I figured you'd approve.
